Having discovered your photographs only a very few months ago I am feeling hugely sorry already in anticipation of having them no more.
But congratulations on 9 YEARS - that is NO MEAN FEAT.
I've been doing something similar in a more private way for almost exactly 4 years so I know it's not an easy thing to do on a daily basis.
Happy birthday from germany; i have been in toronto 15 years ago ;-)
I'm sad to hear that this is the last year. I go on your site multiple times a day so that I don't get homesick.
Tenth and final year!?! Say it ain't so!! I've been following you for years, own all your books, and look forward to work.
Why final year??? no... :(
final. FINAL !!! say it ain't so!
many congratulations. i would rather wish myself many many more years of daily dose of imagery.. u've always been an inspiration.
It has been our pleasure - thank you
9 * 365 + 3 = 3,288 daily doses.
an excellent long time medication.
happy birthday, little fly!
Congratulations and thank you so much for starting my day w/ a beautiful, interesting photo. Yours is the 1st site I look at at.
Not to be greedy (well, I guess it is) but why just one more year?
I've been following daily for 6 of those years and have enjoyed every shot (of course more than others). Best of luck of in your last year and thank you for presenting the great city of Toronto in such a unique and wonderful light.
I've been visiting since almost the beginning and will be until the end. Thanks for all the great images of the city I love. Even though I haven't lived in TO since 1977, I still call Toronto my home, and your blog has helped keep me connected.
Congratulations on your 9th year - I visit the site most every day and it inspires me to look at things differently.
One of the first things I do everyday when I open my laptop is to see what the ddoi is. I’ll keep on doing the same thing till the last and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
I have had your photoblog as my homepage for the last 5-6 years! It's going to be a sad day when I open up my browser and there isn't a new pic up! I've not only told everybody I know about your photoblog, but a even went as far as changing my family and friends homepages from Google to yours....that is when they weren't looking;and they loved it! You made me realize my love of photography Sam, and I thank you. It would be a privilege to learn the tricks of the trade from you, and in the near future "copy your style" and start my own photoblog! .........It's sad to see it end.......but glad it was started! Wish all the best Sam!
Happy blog birthday! Many happy re-- what, what? Final?!
Thank you for the inspiration !
What an achievement. I have followed along for many years, and have been consistently impressed with your application to the project. Was it always your intention to go for 10 years?
Thank you for your 9 years of excellence Sam! It is quite a dedication to do anything for 10 years, let alone every single day of those 10 years. I will miss it 365 days from now, but as we all know, all great things must come to an end.
Thanks for sharing your photos,
-a daily fan for 6 years.
I can understand quitting after 10 years. It's a big commitment, and you have a growing family. But I'll be sorry to see the end of DDOI. I visit daily, and your photos always are a pleasure. Thank you, Sam.
Knowing the end makes me sad - your photos are always a great start to the day. Thanks for your hard work and creative eye.
Wow, this makes me sad! But after ten years (I've been following for 6), I think you're allowed to call 'time' whenever you want! Thanks for the beauty, thoughtfulness and camereducation. I can only hope that someone as equally talented can pick up the gauntlet where you leave off. Peace, 364 days to go...
Last year?????? Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the amazing journey!
I really going to miss your daily posts!
Wow. Congratulations and happy 9th anniversary.
Wait -- you mean I only have one year left of enjoying your wonderful daily posts?! Okay, all good things must end, I suppose. I'll savour every shot.
10th and final year? Is DDOI going to close down next year?
I've been following the blog for years and continue to get enjoyment from it. If you are going to close down I wish you the best with future endeavours.
... and I checked you blog every single day since July 27, 2003!
I share everyone's comments that it will be very strange to open up my computer and not check in with your post. It's been a wonderful way to start the day and to see different part of Toronto (and places beyond) and often from a very different perspective. Thanks for your dedication and sharing your creativity with others.
Your wonderful photos have been a part of my start to the day routine. My first reaction to your comment was 'oh no!!'. But sanity prevailed and I realized perhaps the man needs to take a break. Thank you so much for what you have given!
Wow, happy anniversary... I think I've been following you for a good 5 or 6 of those years. DDOI is one of my daily pleasures.
Which begs the question? Are you looking at starting something new after year 10? (I'm an optimist... I rather think there's something new coming than just not having ddoi in my life anymore)
Congrats again though!!!
So disappointed to hear this is the final year...I check your page every morning and have turned friends onto your site. But it must be a huge commitment so it's perfectly understandable. I'm looking forward to seeing what amazing photographs are posted over the final 365 days.
Thank you so very much for sharing all of your photos.
I look forward to viewing the latest photo every day.
You are a true inspiration to all of us.
Best of luck in this last year.
It has been a pleasure visiting your site and an inspiration to keep working away at my own ones. Enjoy your time with your family.
Thank you Sam.
Bittersweet Sam!! Congrats on your 9th anniversary ..... and I guess, when it's over, I'll just have to begin at the beginning (of the archives) and enjoy the pics ( and your wonderfully quirky mind )all over again... and again... and again...
.... in the meantime, you're still the best treat of the day!
Daily dose of Imagery is my home page and I have a new home page every day:)
Yes, it may be difficult to take care of the site, but please try to continue running the site.
with you since 2002 (though mostly silent) - with many thanks! Looking forward to the final 364 remaining days (& trusting the archive will remain).
I am not sure how long I have been following your work but it is long enough that you have become a regular habit in my life. While I am sorry to find out there is and I do look forward to the next 364 image. All things come to an end and so it will be with the Daily Dose. I won't morn it but I will revel in the joy it has brought me and I suspect many, many others.
I am so sad to hear this will be your final year! Your site has been my homepage on every computer I've used since sometime in 2003 when it popped up on StumbleUpon. Since then, I can't even begin to count the number of people who have walked by my screen, said, "damn, that's an awesome picture," and have themselves become hooked.
You're awesome, and your photos have brightened my days for almost all of those 9 years you've been posting them.
Thank you so much. I look forward to what this next year brings.
You will be missed!
P.S. I believe I mistyped 2002, if I did, I meant 2003. (chagrin)
Congrats on the previous 9 years. I've been a regular visitor and admirer of your site over the years and am saddened to hear that this will be the final one. Best of luck on this final year and with your future projects and endeavours.
no not allowed to ending, made me so sad, now is not only you, lilia will be sad then. how i start my day?
Thank you for your dedication to this blog! I enjoy it everyday.
Thanks for sharing beautiful photos every day. It was a big commitment and a lot of work. Yet, we have another 365 days to enjoy them. What's next Sam?
I have been visiting your page from the very beginning. Looking at your page is the first thing I do every morning. Like many others, it has become part of my daily routine. I even got all my friends hooked.
Anyhow, thank you Sam for all the lovely pictures. We all appreciate the commitment and hard work, that you put into this page.
This will be a very exciting tenth year, with a very sad ending.
I will be very interested to know what other projects you will undertake in the future.
congratulations on nine years. Sorry to hear we're approaching the end, tho---I check the site daily and am always amazed by your gift for seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary. Many thanks.
I am in a wheelchair and live through your photos. Thank you so very much
Your the first email I open each day, I just want to thank you for the many years of dedication you have given to this blog, I'm sure we will all enjoy our final year with you and wish you and your family well in the years to come. THANKYOU !!!!!
Final year! I'll be sad to see you go! I don't know that I've ever commented, but your blog is my absolute favorite photo blog! I've been a subscriber since early spring 2006 and I have found so much inspiration in your work!
I'd like to thank you for all the work you've done with/for DDOI. I have enjoyed your work for several of these nine years. You have a great eye, and a true talent with the lens. I'm sure you have inspired many photographers, I know you've inspired me, on multiple occasions. I look forward to the next (and final :()year of DDOI images, and Thanks, again, for the great images! ~Gravdigr
Hey, remember me? I remember when I was getting into photography around 2004/2005 and I stumbled upon your photoblog. It was literally the reason why I started my own photoblog. I kept up the daily submissions for some time, but eventually it become less and less frequent until now where it is unfortunately on hiatus. I commend you for keeping up the quality work for all these years!
Thank you for nine years of inspiration. You have opened up my eyes and my way of looking at the scenery around me - everywhere I go!
I wish you health and happiness in all that you do. I look forward to your future work. Hopefully you can spend more time with your family when you don't have daily deadlines to meet.
Didn't even realized but I've been following your photo journal for 6 years, it's crazy how many things in my life changed - moved countries twice, worked in 3 different companies, now owning my own business.
Congrats man, so many years and I still enjoy your photos!
High five from Poland.
This news is bittersweet, I found about your page less than a week after it started. 9 years, so much has changed (I've moved like 6 times), but the pictures have remained a constant inspiration. Thanks for continuing it this long and I look forward to what July 5th 2013 brings.
I'm the "camera guy" among my friends and family. Quite a number of people have tried to get me to pursue photography professionally and I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from it as a hobby. But it was this site that inspired me to take a point&shoot with me on a trip to BC and to later get my first DSLR. Sad to hear this will be its last year, but looking forward to whatever's next. I hope there'll be an archive of some kind. Maybe it's time I order the books.
Congrats on your 9 years, please keep it up as I await everyday for see your creation of the day. My favourite of all time is the "Pete sky-painting Michelangelo" image.
I have been looking at the site for almost all of the 9 years and look forward to the year ahead - the site is actually my home page so I always see the new shots first thing every day. I understand why you might want to stop after one more year but hope not (or at least that you go to "photo of the week". Thanks for some really wonderful pictures!
Sam, Sam, Sam! You are the reason I strived to better myself in photography. The reason I went from a point and shoot 8 years ago to a beginners SLR and have recently upgraded to a semi-pro level SLR.
You taught me the importance of capturing foreground, and sharp! Making the whole scene be the moment.
You taught me to try new things, be creative.
You were even kind enough to reply to an e-mail I sent you with an image from my point and shoot all those years ago offering me advice.
This time next year my browsers homepage will have to change ):
Thank you though, your constant effort to share exceptional photography has been greatly appreciated.
Congrats for keeping your blog nine years up and active!! Keep on going!
I have followed your work daily ever since I discovered your site several years ago. I have also taken the time to look at most of your archived images. You have been and are an inspiration to me and my photography. I'll be very disappointed when you stop your site, but hope to follow you on your future endeavors. Thanks for the ongoing inspiration.
Will be sorry to lose you. Came across the site 7 years ago when planning my first trip to Toronto from Glasgow, Scotland. Have been back 6 times and love the inspiration you have provided for me to visit parts of your wonderful city.
All the very best for your future projects.
Congratulations, both to the 9 years and to the extensive library of life images you have. Looking forward to many more.
Thank you for the daily visual inspiration!
I am pleased to 'hear' that you will continue your web presence after the 10th anniversary.
Thank you Sam! Like all of the people posting today, I have been a ddoi photo fan since I found your site and I really enjoy receiving a wonderful photo from you each day. It's a real gift. Your photos are innovative, unusual and fabulous.
I have also enjoyed the wonderful videos (like the MMVA compilation you made) on your site. You have so many amazing talents.
I really appreciate that you post just ONE photo each day. So many photographers, even good ones, don't stop with just the one best shot but post many others as well. Thank you for the very best!
Congrats on another great year!
Congratulations and thank you for 9 amazing years! Have you seen Sarah Polley's "Take This Waltz"? I'd love to see your take on some of the settings featured in that film.
I'm a daily visitor since 2004. you inspired me so much, thank you for your hard work. looking forward to seeing great pics. all the best.
i've been a fan of yours for years. i don't remember how or when i stumbled upon your site, but i do remember having the pleasure of meeting you in person. it was a few years ago at Ht0 park one winter day, and i had my black and orange bike with me. you asked me how the bike handled in the snow with the thin tires. anyway...
i got to meet one of my favourite photographers that day! thank you sam, you inspired me. looking forward to see what you'll come up with next.
we'll miss you
ddoi inspired me to start my own image-a-day site. That was over 6 years ago and I too wonder about finishing. It has been a pleasure visiting and seeing your images evolve. Look forward to the last year and whatever you venture into beyond.
My daily joy :) Thank you for all those awesome pictures!
Sad to hear you're shutting down ddoi :( It's been the first page to open up in my browser since I came back from a vacation in Toronto in 2008 and I've enjoyed your work very much. Looking forward to the last year of beautiful imagery :)
Thank you from Italy, i'm quietly new as follower but since 3 years your picture impress me really much. I'm in love with Canada but i don't know if i'll never have the opportunity to come and visit it with my own eyes. So many thanks, you have explained me how can be likely and amazing your lands.
Having started your photoblog to search for the beauty in Toronto, you've adorned many of our lives with the images you've shared and your site has become a uniquely Toronto experience with an eye on the world.
Sam, I'm curious about the new twists and turns you will bring to us with your new adventure in a year's time.
I'll be there as a passenger for the odyssey.
Thanks for all the great pics.
I started to practice photography recently and your blog has probably been the trigger. You are -and hope will stay- a great source of inspiration!
I starting visiting this photoblog a couple of months after you started. In this period, there have been times I visited your photos multiple times a day and periods where I went through a week's photos quickly in one visit. A time where you inspired me to buy a camera together with a friend back in 2004 and starting photography, which has already gone to a decline since a year ago. I just want to say that you've been an inspiration and I have often praised your determination to carry this project on despite your busy life. I'm happy there will be more of your work, even if it's not daily.
thanks for all these great photos over the last years.
Best regards from Bavaria!
Thank you very much for sharing your skill with photography. Your wonderful photos have given me a great deal of pleasure. It is a delightful start to my day.
its been 6 years for me visiting your site. after coming back from toronto in 2005, i fell in love with the place and to relive when i searched the web and I landed onto your site. its been a daily ritual to check out 'today's' post... feels sad i only have one more year to visit topleftpixel. am sure i will keep finding u on flickr and elsewhere... in case u need a back up of ur selective photographs, i have downloaded more than 1000 from ur website and they all reside in a folder by your site's name... :) will me missing topleftpixel while being inspired by ur work always...
With a crying (03.07.2013!) and a laughing (still 364 days left) eye :
Thank you, Sam, for what you gave us till now.
I look foreward to another year seeing the world through your eyes some minutes per day.
And I'm already curious what's coming then...
All the best for you and your work.
btw. : there is no comment for this witty picture. Great, Sam, great! :-)
Huge Thank You for all those great Pics and proving that panasonic can doit too ;-) Hope to see more of Your stuff on regular basis. Good luck with everything! God Speed!!!
Sam I will miss your pictures when you have finished.
I start my day by visiting your site - such wonderful photos. My secret wish is to one day find that your lense has been pointed my way, riding my bike to work, or just walking the streets with my family... unknown to me until I visit your blog in the morning. Well 365 more chances for that to happen!
This was the blog that made me want to take photographs. Thank you, and the pleasure has been all mine.
Understandable that you do need to go onto something else, Sam. But it will feel like a loss. This just means that we, your visitors - and let's call a spade a spade - your fans, will not take each photo for granted, the way one does something good in your life, that one doesn't realize won't be there one day. Thanks for the years of inspiration.
I have been introduced to your photos by my English teacher in high school 3 years ago and have been subscribed to your website since! It's sad to hear that I won't be able to see your beautiful photos on everyday basis but it's also good to hear that you will still be posting photos :) Hope you will be taking more brilliant photos just like you've been doing until today. Thank you!!
I stumbled upon your website in 2003 or 2004 and since then have not missed a single day. Your daily dose of imagery has helped inspire me to take new perspectives with photography. I can only hope to one day capture some of the amazing and creative photos you have.
Thanks for all of your amazing work. It is sad to know there are only 365 days left but I have loved the past 3287 days!
I posted a don't go mail, before I received your explanation today.
I'm pleased you're not giving up entirely. Hope to wave Hi maybe one day in 2013 for my Toronto longer than a weekend visit.
Thanks for all the fabulous pics.
Best of luck -Rob UK
I am going to miss DDOI! I have been a loyal fan for 6+ years now. Will miss your works Sam!
congratulations and thank you!
Sam, I have to add my voice to the chorus of well wishers. Congrats on 9 years, a huge achievement! I look forward to the year ahead and to following wherever your creativity takes you after that.
I can't believe it's been 9 years already. I stumbled on your blog at some point in 2004, and have gone through every post since, whether that be when I got a chance to every day or once a week as circumstances varied. Your photojournalistic approach to photography, eye for detail, and good soul/sense of humor helped to keep me inspired throughout the term that I studied and acquired my Bachelor of Arts in Photography at Columbia College Chicago. In addition to that, you've given me insight into Toronto that has given me the impetus to try and visit, and even an affinity for the city that has me considering moving there. I greatly appreciate the positive influence both you and DDOI have had on my life, and have referenced the site often to those who enjoy photography or have studied it in college. Thank you for the wonderful memories...it will be sad to see the daily images go. However, I sincerely hope you'll maintain the archive, and will always look forward to new content that you create. Here's to another 10 years of images, Sam...if there was a way, I'd plan a celebration, but I hope you'll appreciate my sincere thanks instead.
Thanks again, and best wishes from another photographer,
Your site is on my bookmarks TOOLBAR (which in my opinion is an honour. :) and is clicked on a daily basis. Glad to hear you will continue to share your work with us! I thought this is a great opportunity to say thanks and that I look forward to the year ahead!
good luck no matter what you do. being a
city-dweller, much of your work probably
strikes a chord with others. your images
always seem to capture something with a
story, history, mood, etc. the people and
buildings and other objects. thx again.
bravo Sam! Your web is my every work day lunch break! I do like those street shots in Downtown, which reminds my experience before, go on Sam!! great job!
ever since i stumbled upon your website, i have been hooked. i also turned into an amateur photographer and use tips that you have left to help me along the way. thought i would drop you a line to wish you all the best in this last year and moving forward. this is the 1st website i hit everyday! thanks for sharing,
I will savour every day of this year then, knowing now that it is the last! I check your site every day although apparently I missed yesterday. Your photos of Toronto are a daily reminder of my old home town, my birth place.
Wow, just read the announcement. I will miss my daily dose, been following you for over 6 years now. Thanks for everything, and most definitely looking forward to your future projects Mr. Javanrouh.
Sorry to hear about the end of ddoi. I've been a subscriber for a few years now and looked forward to each day's image.
Good luck with your next stage... and thanks!
Hi Sam - Like you, I am an immigrant to Toronto and have come to love the city as much as you do. You have introduced so many iconic images of Toronto to the world, and no doubt increased the number of visitors to the city.
I'll look forward to the next 364 images, and wish you all the best for whatever the future holds for you. Hopefully you'll take us along for the ride again.
Great Run .... thank you for consistently providing impeccably well executed - passionate imagery. Much luck to you and hope this year is a remarkable one.
That is sad news Sam. Love visiting your site and have been following you for a long time now - at least 5 years if not more. You were the inspiration behind my own photoblog as well.
But a fresh start is always good... Cheers and good luck with the new direction!
How about 'Weekly Dose of Imagery' or 'Biweekly Dose' or 'Monthly Dose of . . ' ??
Noooo! have followed for 6 years or so and will really miss your beautiful and genius daily posts in my inbox!!!
Congratulations! I look everyday on this website about 3 years. I am looking forward to each new picture. But i didn't know You post photos here for 9 years. It's great!
Noooo....I don't remember how I was introduced to your daily photos, years, for sure...but I can tell you your post is one of the first e-mails I open every day, day after day. It is not just fine photography, but the sensitivity, compassion and insight you display for each and every subject. Every single one. What can I say: I just retired after 39 years of teaching, and I certainly know the feeling of "OK, enough is enough". Tomorrow is just another day - I am grateful for each one, and I sure you are too. Make the most of each. All the best.
Attempted to comment Wednesday but got a little choked up! I have love love loved your pictures for many years (after an uncle from the Yukon sent me the link to your site). You've kept me in love with my city even when it pisses me right off. Best of luck Sam in the year to come and beyond.
Best of luck for your final year. Have followed your blog for many many years (discovered RSS and Netnewswire thanks to you) and you sir are very talented.
Say it isn't so Sam!
Been a massive follower of yours since 2003.
Lived in TO in 2002/2003, and I thank you for making me feel like I've never left!
You are amazing, and all these posts are such a credit to you.
Looking forward to see what will evolve throughout this year.
Cheers from Adelaide, Australia.
Nooooo! I love your photo blog! I echo the comments about this being the first thing I look at every day. Perhaps you can steer us to other photo blogs as we wean off of this one. Thanks for your dedication to this art form. The world is a better place because of your contribution.
Congratulations. This is an awesome project. It is an endless source of inspiration for me.
Shame to hear you are ending it, but you must have your own reasons.
Good luck with whatever your going to do next!
I've been a follower since 2005. Thank you for sharing your life with us through your photos. I will certainly miss this blog!
I've been a big fan of your work since the beginning. I think since 2004. Since I moved from my hometown of Toronto to Barcelona in 2009 your pictures of our city have been a big factor in alleviating my home-sickness. You pictures have inspired my husband and i to pursue photography as a more serious hobby and your art has been a part of our daily routine. For that I thank you. Eldar & Kiana
Well this is news! Your pictures have taken my breath away and inspired me to watch for beauty and structure everywhere. Thank you. I completely understand your decision and wish you the very best. We still have a year!
You inspired me to strive for best, I look forward to your future endeavor.
Yousi (your neighbour)
An inspiration and joy, thanks.
Many thanks for some great images - I just don't know how you managed to find one a day for all that time! I have noticed a change in the style of some of the images recently, some real beauties - I look forward to the next year and to your new site - you deserve a rest and perhaps a more leisurely posting regime! Best wishes and don't forget to tell us your new site when the time is right...
I'm sad to hear that, because i'm a daily visitor.
your photos are a big inspiration for me.
I hope to see your great photos more and more, thanks for all your inspirations and I'm sure it's not going to end after this page, I have a feeling it will be more :)
10 years – wow. I wasn't there from the beginning on, but I was surprised myself to discover that it has already been 8 years now for me, as a fan of ddoi ...
The daily trips to this website will be missed! But I am sure to follow you with visits to your new destination next year.
Always inspiring and always my visual connection across the ocean to a city whom I love. Thank you very much.
Only now catching up to this post in my feed reader. Just also wanted to say thanks for your images. They've been an inspiration, and I look forward to the final year of ddoi, as well as what your fresh start will bring.
My suggestion is to take on guest artists to contribute a week or month each of ddoi.
You were my original inspiration for getting in to photography, and I too have passed on the bug to many so your DNA has gone out into the ether across the ocean.
I have continued to dip in to this site over these 9 years and you continue to show how we always can learn new things and see the world afresh every day, well, most of them anyway ;)
Thanks again, you've earned a break!!!
Always loved your work. What vision - a one year warning. I wish I could have this much foresight.
Will be counting down sadly with you. But a thank you for all those images up to now.
With over how many photos? 3,650+ photos in 10 years? That's certainly a strong level of commitment. :) Congratulations and best of luck!
I've been following your site since 2003 and cannot express in a few words how much pleasure and joy your work has given me. My father was a local photographer (my brother has followed in his footsteps)who had his own darkroom, developed his own prints and loved to try new ways of making the "perfect" image. He taught us to appreciate the photographic art and your site has provided me a daily reason to continue that appreciation.
I think I started following you close to the beginning. Your blog stood out for me and your many Toronto shots (especially at the Islands) have affected me deeply on many occasions. I have told many friends and acquaintances about your blog and directed them to it. Everyone I told found it enjoyable and remarkable. Thank you so much for all these photos. There is one that has adorned my laptop's wallpaper for years now (a lightening bolt seen from the main bridge at the Island). I feel that you are not just a blogger, but a friend who really "gets" my city. I do hope you will continue even if sporadically as I cannot imagine not being able to see where you've been!
Have been doing some catch up. Your daily dose was my cure for homesickness (and rotating wallpaper) when I lived abroad for the last 4.5 years and now glad to say that I'm back. I'l be sad to see your blog come to an end but hope that you will leave it up to inspire and allow us to revisit from time to time a great portfolio and body of work that you've built up over the last 9+years. Thanks for the great job!
So strange to see this, you must have heard me tell my friend, "It must be nearly 10 years! He said it was only going to last 10 years." Congratulations on a wonderful achievement! So many fun & interesting photos! I know you have grweatly influenced the way I see the urban landscape & the pictures I take of it. Best of luck in your new site --wWe look forward to it.
ps Wow! Your little girl is getting big!
Good web site you've got here.. It's hard to find quality writing like yours these days.
I really appreciate people like you! Take care!!
