First, love the images... you've inspired me to carry my camera around all summer so far in an attempt to improve my skills. The full manual feature is finally getting a bit of a workout thanks to you =)

Second, if you don't mind a question from a novice:

I'm pretty sure that ef17-40L@40 is refering to the type of lense and it's range, plus the length you shot at... but what does ef mean? I assume that should tip me off to the type of lense, but I have no experience with choosing lenses so I have no base of reference. Could you give a brief run down on the various lenses you use and the abbrievations you use for them?

Thanks

nice contrast and colours.

It's amazing the lengths some people will go to obtain their caffeine fix... smashing a car window to snatch a visible Pepsi.

The shattered glass looks like crystals where it's in focus, and then it turns into sparkling water where it's out of focus. And the empty pepsi bottle is usurping the role of the originator of that whole cascade of the blue colour on the pavement...
I like the composition, how what's most important, what's in focus, is at the bottom of the photo, and I like the dominant blue colour of the whole picture.

incredible composition man... just awesome

With all this heat in Toronto ... that shattered glass actually looks cool and refreshing!

(I think the 40C humidity is getting to me!)

I like this! Initially I had no idea what the blurry background was - until I scrolled down to see the sharper glass and the bottle. I like the color combination of the red brick and the aqua-green glass. The whole photo is very interesting!

Smashing photo! (pun intended).

Sorry.

Oh, oh! That raises more questions than it answers. Truck hits something, splls load? Someone heaves bottle through window? Or ....? Whatever it sure is curious imagery.

I think someone must have wound up hot under the collar - as they say.

Hahah I was so not expecting that Pepsi bottle there. Nice!

My guess is that this glass comes from a shattered advertising glass pane, like the kind found covering ads on things like bus stops. That would explain why the glass is mostly on the sidewalk, but close to the curb, but i am not sure. I don't think a car windshield would shatter like that, but this interesting photo does raise a lot of questions.

every picture tells a story, right? i assume you came on this scene and found it as you shot it...no other evidence of "violence" was present or else you would have shot the cause of the broken glass as well... right sam? so what message did you wish to convey? the possibilities are endless. everyone can make up their own story.brilliant concept, sam...i'll be thinking about this scene all night.

Really really nice photo, Sam! This reminded me of Jon from groundglass.ca [as in ground glass!] ;-p

Hmmm... the result of drinking and driving?

Posted by Matt at July 19, 2005 01:59 AM

How tragic. I hope the bottle was seriously injured.

A compelling image illustrating what lasts and what doesn't in our society.

Great shot, but then I scrolled and was surprised to see a product placement. Looks like the multinationals are winning yet again. I'm sure thats not the message you were trying to convey, but in a society absorbed with big names and a media driven culture it just automatically reads that way. My favorite part of the shot is the transition between the glass outside the depth of field to inside. cropping it would benefit this one, unless you made your victom that survived intacty something that speaks for freedom, but then again I still would prefer to see just the abstract part of your shot it carries a mystery that is aesthetically intriguing like I see in many of your other photographs. Keep up the good work!

As soon as i looked at all the shattered glass in this photograph, i immediately felt like my arms were burning from grazes. Seriously. Very moving. I love your work. Every single photograph is so beautiful and telling, and it heightens our reality.
