Comments: yellow revealing green

I really like this one. It's like the seasons in reverse. Or as though the artifice is crumbling away, waiting for a whole new building to pop up from beneath it.

wonderful colors, I like the old feeling.... :-)

Props for the site Sam. I am hopelessly devoted beginner climbing to a higher skill level. I hope to be able to produce not only the imaging messages you send, but your broadcast knack as well. Great pick.

The psychiatric hospital ones are some of the best ones. This one is great too!
Hm....i wonder why Sam spends so much time around a psychiatric hospital? =D

Sam, how do you find these places. Wow, fantastic image. I'm learning a lot about composition from you: I'd have cropped or left the windows and switch out but I'm sure glad you left them in; they make the picture.

Preciosa, da la impresion de tener hojas de arboles pegadas en la pared.

I love this. Any more from the hospital?

Brilliant composition.

The title says it all. The color contrast and the texture of the flaking paint are really interesting.

I worked in a psychiatric hospital in Upstate New York for years as a psych. social worker before quitting and becoming an industrial/stock photographer (until a heart attact 18 years later). Your photo is the essence of the old mental hospital for warehousing unfortunates. After becoming a photographer I could never look at such places again. Now, living in Mexico and working a few minutes at a time I can appreciate your vision of it. Good work. Buen Hecho.

mmm green was originally underneath. can you imagine walking through the green halls of a psychiatric hospital? creepy

no wonder they painted it over with a warmer colour

i still have this urge to rip off all those paint chips though

as ive said before, i LOVE the whitby's photos... the first thing i thought when i saw this was how the green paint was trying to escape out of the walls... breaking through and all... struggling just to be seen....

the moral... always strip and sand before painting.

UNLESS: you want to be featured on ddoi.

I found your site through Google (and haven't much time to sign up for this site), but I was just wondering how you get the color to be so brilliant and clear on your photos. I realize I should be posting this in the forum, but I haven't the time to sign up at the moment.

First thing that came to mind was the changing of leaves in fall, but these colours are in reverse.

I think I am the only one here who does not like the witby psych photos. Don't get me wrong they are in everyway good photos. I just dont like the subject matter. It's just plain creepy. I mean looking at that decrepid broken down place just leaves me feeling terrible.

I agree about the green being just about the worest shade and colour for a psych building. I really think the overall design of that building is enough to make a sane person nuts. I find it funny that doctors of psychology could have created a building so psychologically damaging to house people who they wanted to help. Isn't the effects of such things on the human mind. the very essence of what they are supposed to be experts of. (should I even mention the effects of the chicken wire-ish caging on the windows?)

Good photo. Glad most of eveyone can enjoy it. I just find it terribly depressing to see it.

Richard> This building is a rather popular spot for Toronto Area photographers. I think knowing photographers and getting somewhat into that "scene" helps in finding good locations. Also a good eye helps.

Looks like ivy crawling up the wall. Awesome image. I just love the warm and bright colors.

It's pretty. :-P

Qi,

not an OBSESSIVE impulse... I hope!?!?!

whitby's reference... former psychiatric... never mind.

Posted by unger at January 13, 2005 07:09 PM

I think it looks like little green ivy leaves.

great image, the 2 colours are superb together

I love how it appears that perhaps a distraught patient began peeling the newer paint away.

painting brick requires so much upkeep! lol i like the green under the yellow, but i have to say my favorite part of the photo is the broken glass with unpainted brick behind it. it's so raw... like the reality inside is painted over with cheery colors and beyond the cloudy windows is the darker reality. it's almost ironic

gives u a strange sense of being disillusioned. hey - what's up with u and the whitby psychiatric hospital?
