I love this picture! So much of the art of photography is having an eye for the image, and I don't think I would ever have seen something like this. And I don't think it would look quite as cool if the focus were reversed.
Posted by L at December 8, 2004 03:13 AMAll prime numbers.
Posted by Night Eagle at December 8, 2004 04:40 AMNo, I agree with you, the Fed-Ex truck is definitely the one which should hold the crisp lines of focus! Nice photo ^_^
Posted by Phil Moore at December 8, 2004 05:28 AMVery nice! I agree with you, personally, I like hiding stuff from the viewer, it makes the shot much more interesting.. well, unless you hide everything ;)
Good work!
Posted by jody at December 8, 2004 06:34 AMI think I like the fact that the truck is in focus and not the numbers. The colours in the truck's reflection make this look American almost.
Posted by miklos at December 8, 2004 06:39 AMI agree with you, the focus on the reflection makes it a lot more interesting.
But maybe next time you should show both versions, so it's easier to compare.
Ahhhh the Fedex arrow, the Fedex arrow
Posted by behrouz at December 8, 2004 07:50 AMI do like it that way ... amazing shot, your photography is excellent. I'm a photojournalism student and I check out your photos everyday.
Posted by Laura at December 8, 2004 08:50 AMas always, I find your work interesting and look forward to checking out your site daily. keep it up! jooles
Posted by jooles at December 8, 2004 09:13 AMThis works for me too. I first thought that the numbers were cut out and we were looking through a fence! Nice work.
Posted by The PhotoMat at December 8, 2004 09:40 AMThis certainly works as is. The photo wouldn't have as much impact IMO if the focus was reversed.

"But maybe next time you should show both versions, so it's easier to compare."
What are you even talking about? There's not 100 different versions of each photo on Sam's harddrive...
Posted by Daniel at December 8, 2004 12:21 PM@behrouz: indeed! This is a fine picture where the Fedex 'hidden' arrow is more visible than usual! I love it!
Posted by Florrie C. Snorring at December 8, 2004 12:32 PMA higher angle would have eliminated the brick wall and given you more of the truck. Too bad.
Otherwise, nice idea.
Posted by Mark at December 8, 2004 01:14 PMI agree with you and everyone else: you made the right choice, focus-wise. I also like the shadows from the numbers' depth.
P.S. I've always been a sucker for the FedEx arrow. A genius came up with that one.
Posted by Joe M. at December 8, 2004 02:30 PMwish there was something new to say. Everyone else has summed it up. Stick with your instinct.
be back tomorrow

Daniel, the word both implies 2 not 100.
Posted by Henk Bakker at December 8, 2004 04:38 PMThat would be a good background as well, of course that could just be me because 210 is my address.
Posted by Relic21 at December 8, 2004 06:01 PMMark> the man is only so tall. cut him some slack. I am sure if he was 6`9 he could get some really interesting angles too, but lets keep things to what are possible.
Everyone seems so focused on unfocusing one part of the photo or another. I think the photo would have been brilliant if everything had been in focus. I think if everything was clear it would have looked much better. Like how it would have looked if we had viewed it with our own eyes. I dont know how difficult that would be to achieve with a camera, but it sure would have been a nice photo if you could have kept it all in focus.
P.S. You know... I never really stopped to look at the FEDEx sign before. This is the first time i have seen the arrow.
Posted by scott at December 8, 2004 06:22 PMI like the way Sam sees things and snaps things. I am
so happy every day to see another picture the way
Sam sees the world. Thank you, Sam. You do light
up my day.
I really enjoyed this shot ;o)
It looks 3D yet no "PHOTOSHOP EFFECTS"!
U are truly a great photographer...
Focus schmocus, it looks awesome how it is. Well done, you've got a great eye!
Posted by Sean at December 9, 2004 01:37 AMExcellent focus. There is absolutely nothing that I would change in this. Perfect photo.
Posted by quasi at December 9, 2004 02:26 PMI can't believe I never noticed the arrow before. Wow.
I love the out-of-focus-ness of the numbers (just like everyone else has said). It kind of reminds me of how when I take off my contacts and get close enough to a mirror so that my face is in focus, everything behind me is out of focus even though the mirror itself is within focus range.
My brain has a hard time wrapping around that concept. :)
Great job, Sam. Another great photo.
Posted by keriish at December 9, 2004 05:51 PMThis photo would not be as interesting if the wall and numbers we're in focus! Great JOB!!!
Great site too.

Posted by Kevin Giguere at December 9, 2004 10:44 PMi second your choice of focus - this way it shows the reflected object and not just "that something reflects in these numbers". I especially like the amout of unsharpness of the three digits... great shot!
Posted by manuel at December 10, 2004 06:02 AMI often am torn between whether to accentuate or hide the more interesting subject. In this case, I think it was indeed better to focus on the truck, as it might not be obvious enough if the 210 was in focus, and the 210 itself is not interesting enough to hold the picture.
Now, if you had a naked woman reflected in the 1, I would vote to focus on the 210.
This picture is absolutely the best photo I have seen in a very long time. Wow.
