Astonishingly beautiful... great color match between sky, window frames and the sign

Posted by Ali Shapal at November 17, 2004 01:50 AM

very nice shot! and color - i like it.

Posted by lukasz at November 17, 2004 03:47 AM

Sam,
Have you been feelin' blue recently?

Great pictures...

Posted by AMiN at November 17, 2004 03:53 AM

Nice blue color :)

Posted by Dwight Demmers at November 17, 2004 04:04 AM

The extreem underexposure makes it very graphic. A nice composition with only a few elements and a sense of humour. Like yesterday it shows the eye of the photographer.

Posted by Henk Bakker at November 17, 2004 04:21 AM

Haha! @first I thought it's a setup! :-)

Posted by ila at November 17, 2004 04:24 AM

Beautiful photograph; the intense colour and contrast make it look painted.

Posted by Chris at November 17, 2004 04:55 AM

The sign is ambiguous and the picture is showing a a sad mood, cold ice feeling. How about making the same effect with bright orange or something passionate. Even with power off there is still life there. Most of your pictures are about life, this one is an interesting turnaround.

Posted by Alex at November 17, 2004 06:47 AM

This is one of the better images lately. Good work

Posted by Sketch at November 17, 2004 07:06 AM

Finally, a good one :) How did you get the sky like that?

Posted by alex at November 17, 2004 07:42 AM

What a great photo: simple yet powerful

Posted by john at November 17, 2004 08:01 AM

I like your shot, I really do...
A limited number of colours, simplicity and no distracting elements make it such a stricking image... my oppinion at least.

Posted by HACS at November 17, 2004 08:20 AM

wow! i'm lovin the colors!

Posted by incole* at November 17, 2004 08:23 AM

This is part of art display by a Toronto artist that lives in Kensington Market.

They also did something similar on Baldwin st, just west of Spadina. On the board, one side read "HogTown" the other side said "Downtown". There was an article about it on Sat's Globe in Toronto Section 1 month ago

Posted by Alper Ozdemir at November 17, 2004 08:33 AM

It seems like it's a continuation from yesterday's image. The blue is surreal and in a weird way it makes me smile.

Posted by Mike M at November 17, 2004 09:23 AM

Sam,

Surfing through your archive of photos was like rifling through a mound of dog feces-- except not as rewarding.

Posted by chemical imbalance at November 17, 2004 09:28 AM

Wow.

Two arrows on the sign pointed to the left, two arrows on the building (the windows) pointed up.

Thanks for yet again showing me that there are amazing photos to be had in the most 'normal' of locations.

The blue wash works so well too.

Posted by David S at November 17, 2004 09:32 AM

I can't say nothin' O_O oh!

Posted by gregos at November 17, 2004 10:11 AM

Sam-
Thanks for your images. They are inspiring. I enjoy your work and have been motivated to start photographing again. Just wanted you to know I appreciate your work and efforts.

Take care-
Mark

its just so cool. its just so cool on so many levels. where can i begin...

the blue the monotonistic shade of colour that carries throughout the photo. The sign. wow the sign. the humour and genius of the sign. I like the contrasting windows one black one white. there just isnt enough time for me to cover all the details.

Ill post again tomorrow morning with more.

oh one more thing the two arrows on the power off sign matching the two windows of the house in perfect balance. Genius this time sam. Its genius.

can you post how this photo was created in the forum? im so curious

Posted by scott at November 17, 2004 10:23 AM

ah, the blue mood of this photo makes me feel cold. i love it when an image does that!

Posted by gleek at November 17, 2004 10:41 AM

i am a newcomer / i am totally burned out of the politics in my country and have had a news page as my homepage / so recently i chose this page for my homepage (a fresh new start to the day) / the first time i read the comments i thought, uh oh, there's one in every crowd (chemical imbalance) but i have mixed feelings about an outright ban / at first i just decided not to read any of the comments / curiousity wins / i prefer not to read nasty remarks / they do not serve to further so i will go to the poll and vote to ban / sorry if i have posted this in the wrong place

Dear Mr. Chemical Imbalance,

Congratulations on your successful quest for attention! You are important and are the focus of people's thoughts! You are doing so well.

You comment today was so excellent. Humor laced with self depricating wit! You are certainly on a roll!! By equating surfing this site with running your hand through dog doo doo you successfully communicate the opinion you have of Sam's work. Yet, but admitting that find squishing canine poop rewarding you also show us your human side, and we love you for that.

We all remain your biggest fans, and hope that your career as a commenter on DDOI is long and fruitful! You are SOMEBODY, and don't you forget that.

Posted by BW at November 17, 2004 01:15 PM

alex,

most of ddoi is about life? I think you have missed the dillapidated industrial track that Sam is often on... Whitby Mental Hospital etc. etc.

In fact... it's the sweet and sour divergence that makes ddoi a daily thing... for me I mean.

Posted by unger at November 17, 2004 01:33 PM

I love your work. This image is especially great. Brilliant use of monotones. In regards to banning, Im sure you are aware that you can not really ban a particular person ever. Even if you ban their IP, they can log in from anywhere else and post their masty crap if they are so inclined. I like this solution better, where you read thru the commments before making them public on the site.
cheers.

Personalities such as the one shown by Chemical Imbalance will always find a forum in which to spew, pull attention away from the topic itself, and provoke strong reactions pro and con -- this is what they live for. Let his search for another forum begin ASAP. One vote for the ban.

Posted by XHAVANA at November 17, 2004 02:52 PM

other than the subject matter this shot is wholly uninteresting. watch your framing. the shot is almost hard to look at for a long period of time. i find it very interesting to see that much vignetting at f11 even with the el-cheapo kit-lens included with the 300D.

subject is pretty cool though.

BW,

well played!

Posted by unger at November 17, 2004 03:43 PM

I like the color of the sky in this picture, very bold and smooth. Very cool.

Ban chemical imbalance? Isn't everyones comments perfectly viable? Isn't the point of the 'approval' stuff so that unnecessary comments are feeded out? It is his own fault if he can't write something that deserves to get posted. If you are going to ban him, ban me to.

Posted by switch at November 17, 2004 04:53 PM

hey sam- im a long-time-secret veiwer of your site and i really love your photos, and i have been going to this really awesome site called photosig.com, you critique other peoples work, get some points, and once you get enough you can post your own pictures and have people comment/crit you shots (thats the basic jist of it, check it out for yourslef to find more out)- you would rock that site man.. and if you get'a chance check out my work;) http://www.photosig.com/go/users/view?id=194633
great shot today by the way, i love the colors

Posted by Aaron at November 17, 2004 06:07 PM

Nice picture today, and some interesting responses to it.

It'd be interesting to see what the vote is on the fate of our budding performance-artist, chemical imbalance. I find his works a little derivative, though perhaps he could be described as a member of the post-trolling movement.

Anyway, the pedant in me speaks, it's poll not pole.

Posted by Aegir at November 17, 2004 06:35 PM

I like the vignetting. Great shot Sam.

Posted by Carlos at November 17, 2004 08:00 PM

I like it, very graphic

Posted by Nancy at November 17, 2004 09:13 PM

This not part of the art project that one of the posts said it was part of. The artists, Above, does arrows (and arrows only). he's from California and installed arrow signs all over North America.

There's a small article on him in the upcmoing issue of Spacing.

This is a sign for streetcar repairs, I believe, near College. McCaul also has streetcar tracks but it's out of use due to College Street's streetcar track construction.

what a ridicoulos idea....ban someone cause they don't blow smoke up your ass?? you're lucky anyone even cares about your little hobby. criticism is the only thing standing between us and Nazi Germany. if you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen buddy. pathetic. and of course you have to register to vote...i wonder, but i bet all your friends and relatives will take the time. Have fun in your dream world pal.

Posted by josh at November 18, 2004 03:08 PM

always a pleasure, I was instantly addicted to your site and it doesn't look like that will be ending anytime soon!

Posted by devinitti at November 18, 2004 03:49 PM

Sam,
Beautiful picture right for your next book.
What did you do do to get this effect ?
Photoshop or heavy filtering ?

Posted by Rene at November 20, 2004 07:20 AM

wow, excellent shot. Moody, dreamy, like out of a movie.
