Comments: blue room

Do you know what they were shooting? Maybe something infested with CG.

Posted by Ali at November 16, 2004 02:38 AM

All those shadows from the bars just below the lights would make that a pretty bad blue screen to try and get a key off of. Maybe they light it differently when they're shooting. It helps make the photo more interesting though.

something like sky captain and ............

Posted by mooni at November 16, 2004 07:49 AM

Sam, may be I missed something and therefore I am coming down too hard... but I just can't understand why you would take this shot... I wonder whethere you would have taken this shot if you were paying for film! How could you have such a good shot yesterday and then post some junk like this today?

Posted by HACS at November 16, 2004 08:55 AM

it sure is blue / smile

Posted by katherine at November 16, 2004 08:56 AM

So what's the weather like in Toronto today? :-)

Coincidentally, I shot all blue today, too, although my blue is less uniform:

I agree HACS...
but not about the part that yesterday's picture was any good. there has never been a yesterday here at ddoi that i particularly enjoyed.
i can find a million shots like this in the 25 cents or less bin at "Ugly-Photos-R-Us"

Posted by chemical imbalance at November 16, 2004 09:36 AM

i like this photo. it's takes a minute to figure out what's going on because the point of reference is in the top right corner. an interesting perspective.

Posted by gleek at November 16, 2004 09:54 AM

Well, thank goodness we have the humor charged comments of Mr. Imbalance to help us make it through another day. Seriously, you are a genius, Chemical. Come here for the photography and stay for the "insight".

Posted by BW at November 16, 2004 09:56 AM

I know I'm the one that preached "not all photographs should be psychoanalyzed" on djn1's site the other day, but I do wonder what made you choose this image for today.

Posted by miklos at November 16, 2004 10:19 AM

I don't necessarily agree with eveyone here...I like the composition, the contrast of the smooth field of blue with the gridlines of the steel in the upper right corner. And that blue is mesmerizing.

Posted by Meredith at November 16, 2004 10:27 AM

I like it.
Just because I can see a film set and thats interesting to me. The shadows are cool too and i like the bars and the lights above.

I was wrong about this week being a sky photo theme its a sky blue theme.

in homage of that theme a few lyrics from the Smashing pumpkins

"Hey blue, all your love is strange
Come out with all those crazy names
So true when you lie
For you, blue

Right or wrong
I belong"

Interesting photo, in way of the shadows off the wires.....

hi

Posted by Clumsypunk at November 16, 2004 12:51 PM

HACS,

it is suprising... also... I don't like the weather today and it was so nice yesterday!

it's SHOCKING! that Sam doesn't please you every day, no doubt about it! maybe it's because Sam posts a lot of different kinds of pictures?

just teasing HACS... because in the end my point is that of course you have the right to not like every photo Sam posts. At least I think so... that might depend on what country you are posting from.

Posted by unger at November 16, 2004 01:06 PM

...must have been the blue monday thing...
This is awful Sam. Like I said before, you don't have to post everyday

Posted by Henry at November 16, 2004 01:59 PM

Sam!!!!
Hello again,
I do believe that instead of deleting these mindless posts by your favourite critics you should be concentrating on gathering better pictures. Soon enough Chemical will have stolen your thunder along with your fans.
Delete this post if you agree.
Yours truly,

nice. wish they'd redo the chroma key wall at my tv station.

Posted by cycle60 at November 16, 2004 03:14 PM

Cripes... if you don't like the picture(s), go somewhere else or don't come here at all.

Today's shot? I like it. It's a nice shade of blue, the shadows look kinda like one of those 70's string art things and it kept me away from work for a couple minutes, which is always a good thing.

Sam! Purple fringing! ;)

Posted by Chris at November 16, 2004 03:23 PM

For me this a beautiful abstract. The ratio between the blue and the rest is just right. The places where the curved line divides the top and the right side are exactly right too. The placement of the 5 lights is pleasing to the eye. The shadows on the blue make a nice pattern. Many photographers can take a beautiful picture of a beautiful thing, but when you can make a good composition of a very ordinary scene like this you’re better than most photographers.
Sam has a good eye for things like this and a good feeling for composition.

took me a while to see that we were looking up at the lighted roof ;P

Posted by riff at November 16, 2004 04:53 PM

I have looked at that photo twice and was fooled twice. I keep thinking its some crazy blue sky then raise my eyes a little to see how wrong I am. Regardless thats a very nice photo.

After all, this is Sam's web site. Not ours. He is generous enough to allow us to peek into his world via these postings. We can look, or we can not - it's our choice. Please refer to Sam's title and explanation of this site. These are images from his daily life. He didn't tell us he was offering daily doses of technical photographic genius. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Woe to you who choose to linger here when you seem so dissatisfied with the offerings.

Thank you, Sam, for sharing your view of your world.

I too had the impulse to start reading psycho-analitical meanings into this series of photos. I have to say that I'm a little bit worried that there might be some underlying depression at the root of these choices. Hope you are feeling alright Sam. Cheer up the winters not so long and the snow and ice that will come make great textures for your photos.

I think though its just as simple as these shades of blue are pretty. So no real worries. Im expecting a blue water photo somewhere in this series.

P.S. If the new crystal wing of the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) is completed I think it would make a wonderful subject for some great photography. The ROM its self might be a treasure trove of possible subjects although I think they might be very restrictive about the use of flash photography inside.

krishna,

you must have a VERY big monitor!

Posted by unger at November 16, 2004 07:18 PM

I love people telling Sam he doesn't have to post every day. The site is called Daily Dose of Imagery for a reason isn't it? Some people like this picture, some don't. Why not leave it at that. To pretend because you think a picture sucks everyone some how will is stupid.

Posted by ramanan at November 16, 2004 08:41 PM

I like it, I'd be tempted to crop the image to exclude the roof so you only see the shadows on the blue.

Posted by miles at November 17, 2004 12:41 PM

To answer the comment of Keith, they hang lights from those bars when they are actually doing a shoot. The lights that are on are just work lights. Not a big deal but just thought I'd let everyone know. I like the strange composition of the photo as well.

Posted by Relic21 at November 18, 2004 12:13 AM

As Relic21 pointed out, the blue is being lit by work lights, not by the lighting that would be used in an actual shoot. I've worked a lot with Ultimate (Fraggle Rock and Muppets) and believe me, to get it to work properly it has to be lit competely flat, without any shadows at all. If this shot was Ultimatted, the lighter blue would disappear, to be replaced by whatever background was being used, while the shadows would show up as dark lines over the background.
