Comments: seagull on statue

now that's a beauty...shame the cloud in the background kinda ruins it...

Posted by Khuffie at November 14, 2004 02:25 AM

No, I would completely disagree about the cloud ruining it! imho

Posted by Sam at November 14, 2004 03:17 AM

me too. if anything, i think it adds to the photo.

the color in the clouds is gorgeous.

it really adds to the silhoutte, in my opinion.

you were lucky to catch that bird there (or maybe you just have a good eye)

either way, nice shot.

You said, no pigeons :)

The guy has a really nice looking butt. That really pleases me and will keep me entertained all day. Thanks Sam for posting 'my kind of thing'... must go, plans to make, kleenex to find, y'know...

It's not a bird, it's a seagull. And if you ever pass Union Station, 9 times out of 10, you'll find a bird of some sort sitting on the statue's head. This is why the statue was gone for a few months, early summer, to wash the white streaks off his face.

And yes, very nice photo. Is that at dawn, or dusk?

I love the dramatic look of the silouette and the blue sky and clouds. Great shot.

Posted by Gypsy at November 14, 2004 08:33 AM

the cloud adds another dimension and i particularly like the bird in flight to the left of the pedestal

Posted by katherine at November 14, 2004 09:18 AM

The bird in the lower left corner, flying on its side, that is quite something.

Posted by hyoomik at November 14, 2004 09:51 AM

Good composition and light exposure. Are the birds part of the sculpture? It looks like Sam captured one being set free. The clouds validate the realism of the silhouette -- helping us to see that it is not just an outline of artwork pasted on a blue background. Canada has some beautiful cloud formations.

I love the cloud and it would be fun to see a crop of the bird flying sideways in the lower left.

Sam, you are an inspiration. Thank you.

Posted by Richard at November 14, 2004 11:53 AM

That isn't a seagull in the lower left corner -- it is obviously a Klingon Bird of Prey. :)

Great composition. I love the contrast between the silhouetted statue and the sky. Very good shot!

I am here in the states and just last week learned about Sam's web site and ddoi. I am not a photographer but I love photography and take pictures when I can so I appreciate the beauty of Sam's pictures. I just wanted to know if there is anyone out there who has followed Sam's work in the past 1-2 years and is a professional photographer and is able to go through these pictures and rate them **** or *** or **. In that way, one can access the archived materials quicker for a high qulaity picture that can be educational as well.

Today's picture is really beautiful.

It's Sunday afternoon in November. It's so cloudy, so gloomy here. A Baroque harp music was playing in my living room when I opened Sam's photo-blog and saw this photo. This music goes so damn well with the theme of photo: A "god" kind of figure is building the universe at a twilight zone. I won't be able to forget this very poetic moment ever. I guess a memory can be formed in our mind as easy and random as this one. And if a memory stays there so vivid and begins to live inside us, it becomes nostalgic.
Anyway! I got carried away a bit!?! Great shot.

Good photo. For all the reasons stated above by other people. I dont know what I could possibly add to these insights, except for that the reflection off the glass of the building is particularly beautiful as well and I feel it also helps assert the realism of the photo beyond the sketch drawn appearence of the dark silouette.

P.S. I hope the klingons will be kind to you all in Toronto and not work you too hard in their dilithium slave mines... no worries though after all william shatner is a canadian. kirk has to come save you sometime.

this is solid. strong contrast and composition. keep it up.

Beautiful.

this is so amazing.
i also think the cloud adds so much more too it.
and are the birds part of the statue?
and the tall building down the left side just tops it off too.
either way it is just amazing.
i looove it.

I've only been to Toronto a few times, so I have to ask - is this statue in honor of someone or something? Is it for a famous ornithologist? Or is it just a representation of some abstract thing? Either way, the beauty of the symbolism, so exquisitely captured and amplified here, makes me very curious about this statue. How it looks in other kinds of light, if there's an inscription, how large it is.

Long time fan of the site - thanks, Sam!

I agree that this one's really good, though I think the top half is pretty unnecessary. I also don't think you should've bothered correcting the perspective. That straight line on the left might've given this some more zing had it been left a bit angled.

At any rate.. nice job.

Posted by Andrew at November 14, 2004 11:17 PM

I am wondering if this isn't a sun dial... does anyong in Toronto know? They also go by the name of "Armillaries"? This looks like one, or what the artist was trying to acheive. I love the image, but it is a very cool statue and I'd love to know if it really is intended to represent or be an actual armillary. Anyone?

Posted by Amy at November 14, 2004 11:51 PM

The statue is called 'Monument to Multiculturalism' and was a gift to Toronto by the National Congress of Italian Canadians in 1985. Fitting for our incredibly multicutural city! (Except that when it was erected, it was panned by many art critics......but we all know that everyone's taste is wonderfully unique, don't we?!!) It stands outside Union Station.

It's not a sundial.

Peace.

I like the photo but i wish it was cropped to remove some of the sky. otherwise its good

STOP THE PRESS! there has been a mis-post!

Though i do secretly admire that finely chiseled butt, i would never post it here in a photoblog comments section!

so all you haters and wannabes take note: my sexuality remains a mystery!
