I daily watch your photos, and it's simply stunning.

How long did you wait at this location and how many shots did you take?

Posted by MarS at November 4, 2004 02:47 AM

My eye first caught the guy, then the sharpness and clarity of the steel chairs---their metalic quality really comes through---then I see the seed is caught deliciously in mid-air. And overall the colours are dark and drab but the pockets of colour (bright-blue Gatorade, yellow light, red hat, blue sign) keep me interested.

Speaking of that traffic light, it looks so low (as are the cars) that the patio must be elevated. But those chairs, man they look almost unreal. Great shot.

Why does that dude have two hats?

Posted by Simon at November 4, 2004 04:00 AM

You caught a very beautiful moment there. I love the feel to the photo.

Nice photo (as always) even though i hate people feeding those bastard-pigeons...

Posted by Amp at November 4, 2004 05:40 AM

Oh man, that's just freakin' awesome. Excellent capture of motion!

Posted by Houser at November 4, 2004 06:06 AM

Nice shot.
There is a blur in his hand but seeds with their motion are clear. It's a weird scene.

Hey isn't that the same guy from the Kerry at Dundas photo from two days ago? Were they taken on the same day then?

Posted by Abby at November 4, 2004 07:21 AM

It's the cool thing to always have two hats if you're a bird feeder. Anyway, this photo kicks ass. Perfectly crisp detail, excellent mood and just the right moment. Very well done.

Hey isn't that the same pigeon from the Pigeon in Sepia photo from yesterday? Were they taken on the same day then? :)

Posted by Mark at November 4, 2004 08:09 AM

Yup it is the same guy... Nice moment, but it's also a little more generic than I'd like to see. Generally, I like the images I see on your site, Sam- but I'd also like to see you push yourself a little more, photographically speaking. You are better than some of the images you show.

Also what was the deal with your site over the last few days? Kept getting 404 errors... were you down?

Posted by Pixeldog at November 4, 2004 09:11 AM

he has two hats because he probably knows from experience that one of the birds is bond to poop on the one hes wearing. Hes just thinking ahead and being prepared... =-)

jokes aside... stunning and great. Perfect moment in time captured in an interesting perspective. I am mostly stunned by your way of noticing events in life that most people would think are mundain and would most likely ignore as they walk past. Yet these photos show the beauty of such simple and all too often unoticed moments in life. Great work... and way to go capturing people again. I can imagine people must be just about the hardest subject matter to work with.

crimeny abby, i think you're right! that is the same fellow from the other day

Sam, your meager photography is for once obscured by your blossoming skills in stalking.

crimeny mark, i think you're right! that is the same pigeon from the other day!

Posted by Kathy at November 4, 2004 11:09 AM

How did this guy get bread crumbs from a burrito? Great composition and action!

Posted by Kevin at November 4, 2004 11:33 AM

the good:
i really like the whole picture, specially the smoothness and clarity of the steel chairs, which keep grabbing my attention. the pigeons and their movement are well captured as well.

the bad:
the upper part of the guy looks over manipulated in the photo. if not for the legs and the hand leaning on the table, one would think he was just pasted over the scene. and while the seeds immediately leaving his hand are sharp, the ear and the hand of the guy is blurred. seems a bit strange for a 1/250.

Posted by ren at November 4, 2004 11:37 AM

Capturing a motion! It's usually beautiful, this one is great. It seems that halted moment is waiting for you to press a button to resume the moment. Try to imagine the aftermath. Seeds will fall one after another, making a string of sharp sounds, pigeons, move their round head/neck back and forth and...
What is the feeder thinking about? Election? America? Poverty? Food? Freedom?

Posted by slicesoflife at November 4, 2004 11:40 AM

The pigeons in Toronto definitely look healthier than NYC pigeons!

Posted by BW at November 4, 2004 12:44 PM

Mmmm glow in the dark gatorade,
I like the spread of whatever he is throwing, when I see it, I see math and averages.

Posted by Lorin Halpert at November 4, 2004 01:34 PM

I don't understand why people feed pigeons. They are disease-ridden filthy flying rats.. You might as well intentionally feed cockroaches.

Nice photo.

love and hope for our earth.....

Sam, you are amazing! This picture is so perfect, from the man with the two baseball hats tightly gripping his food, the blue Gatorade, his crossed legs, the sunglasses! The background, the street lights, the bad rapped onto the seat next to the pidgin feeling man.. And of course not to mention the perfectly frozen in mid-air seeds and the staved pidgins.. I love it.

Posted by Aaron at November 4, 2004 05:05 PM

i like it.

Posted by kandi cook at November 4, 2004 06:26 PM

That photo is beautiful. I love the way you can see the seeds so clearly. The detail in the background is also very nice. Another beautiful shot. I tip my hat to you good sir!

beauty, mate.

Posted by Sheryl at November 4, 2004 11:06 PM

Nice. Did you set a quick shutter speed?

Posted by wookiee at November 5, 2004 11:25 AM

very beautiful picture - separation of foreground / background in my opinion is perfect.

wow, Awesome catch

Posted by adam at November 7, 2004 02:34 AM

Very nice freezing action. Nice shallow DOF.
I hope you also give the settings for the speed, aperture, ISO etc and other usefull EXIF information so we can learn too.
Thanks

how can the hand be blurred but not the seed immediately net to it?
