Comments: [v] cn tower close-up timelapse

Holy batman!

Posted by Khuffie at November 1, 2004 12:17 AM

this is great - the shooting stars (planes) and the sunrise are my favorite parts.

Posted by chrys at November 1, 2004 12:30 AM

Awesome. What are you doing differently in each half? Hypothesis: there is only one half, and you simply have the mirror image running backwards in time :)

Posted by Kartik Agaram at November 1, 2004 12:43 AM

Sam, that video is spectacular. My favorite of the photos is the bottom left. The glow around the bottom is very nice.

Posted by Alec Long at November 1, 2004 01:34 AM

wow, this is a close up time laps from your other shot time laps? I never knew it could have such detail, what resolution were you capturing at? I have the urge to get a beast that does 26x optics but the CMOS resolution sucks 640x480 I think :(

We will talk on MSN, amazing and fun *hearty hand shake*

Top right one is my favourite... the bronze color of the CN tower beside the gray sky reminds me of those end-of-the-world movies !
And the time lapse is amazing .

Is the hypothesis stated above true ? Wonderful pics and great video.

Awwww apple plugin. I hate installing that stuff. I guess I'll just imagine what the video must've looked like..

Posted by miklos at November 1, 2004 06:35 AM

You are one sick bastard, man! Effin great stuff. I wish I subscribed to the Canon philosophy so I too could do timelapse. But alas, I am a Nikon man.

Posted by Houser at November 1, 2004 07:59 AM

i think its time to get me a digital slr.

quite like the lower left one...lit from below and all. upper right too, because its quite moody and somber.

Very, very nice, Sam. I looked at your "How To". I personally would like to see the timelapse for the image you showed on the How To page... Could you do this at some point in time?

Posted by Mark at November 1, 2004 09:57 AM

Another great time lapse video, I tried this after I got my G5 and it was fun, but your results are excellent.

Just noticed you used an 'L' lens for this, did you rent it? If so where would you recommend for renting lenses in Toronto?

Cheers

The timelapse photography is great. I loved to see the movement of the moon and bright ("falling") star. How the clouds roll in was also exciting. Then the shadows on the buildings in daylight became intriguing. Like others have said, I am quite surprised with the amount of detail you captured on the CN tower. The presentation of juxtaposition stills is quite tantalizing. Each image has outstanding qualities of its own. The center images provide good contrast to separate the even more excellent top and bottom photo sets.

you are a kin to a god with a camera in your hand... im staggered and blown away by this .... let me stand in awed silence now.................... ...... ......

Posted by scott at November 1, 2004 10:42 AM

This is pretty nice. Amazing. But there's way more to do with this technique. Maybe just repeat this next summer, with blue sky and no clouds? This could make an interesting sunset, with shadows moving over the buildings and without the disturbing clouds (which seem too fast imho). I'd also love it if you could make a longer slow-motion sequence of the sunset, starting at early dawn and finishing just before the sun goes away.

Oh, or you could make such a video at night, with long exposure time, filming how the stars move along the sky. I want such a camera, damnit.

Great job! Reminded me the Barak film which I awfully love.

This one literally blows the parody site off the map!

Posted by Kevin at November 1, 2004 11:34 AM

Sorry to disappoint anyone that finds this timelapse series excellent but I just find it... boring!
I would have liked to see it during different weather conditions (e.g. snowstorm, thunderstorm plus hailstorm), or for example if someone is paiting the tower or doing construction. Otherwise, it is just plain boring. Sam, you have the technique but please don't forget to use your heart!

Posted by HACS at November 1, 2004 01:05 PM

sam,

If you would give me a way to download the animation that would be better... my browser will not support that plugin... actually, Apple does not support my OS... although there are programs to play the anim....

if not... that's fine too.

Posted by unger at November 1, 2004 03:08 PM

so awsome! :D

Posted by ecila at November 1, 2004 05:08 PM

guy you should have been a film maker. I have seen some of the coolest perspecitives and looks upon things of my entire life on this site. Consider filming your unique perspective to things in life I believe might be well served on film. just bloody awsome.

Posted by scott at November 1, 2004 06:13 PM

Amazing!

Posted by Ida at November 1, 2004 06:28 PM

How anyone could suggest there's no heart in this is mind-boggling to me. Phenomenal work! A true inspiration.

Posted by Kathleen Connally at November 1, 2004 07:44 PM

you know, I'm not even into photo sites but gotta say your pics stand out. boring??? no way.

Posted by buzzcrash at November 1, 2004 09:23 PM

I am also completely an utterly mind boggled by how anyone could not see the beauty of this piece. I imagine like is so often the case with subtlety it sometimes goes unnoticed. The background clouds of which some people have complained are to me the very beauty of this series. The clouds blanketing the background create an impressive and awe inspiring sight. and the sudden break that last just long enough to let a few stars pass by is incedible luck. The split movement of left and right side in oppositional tandem is incredibly talented editing. The choice in focusing on the main 3 decks of the tower and the combining of halves takes this series beyond mere luck of natural circumstances... its the way it is presented to us that makes this a work of art.

P.S. Empire strikes back??? Cloud city??? is it only me who can see it?????

Posted by scott at November 1, 2004 11:55 PM

Cloud City? Yeah, now that you mention it, totally. But I was initially thinking more along the lines of The Jetsons.

Posted by BrotherAli at November 2, 2004 02:01 AM

defiinately one half in reverse. notice how the stars on one side of the tower go clockwise and the other side they go counterclockwise. tricky ;)

Posted by Grant at November 2, 2004 02:41 AM

this is great. good job. =)
