Comments: red mini, green box

i love how you're shots can be of everyday scenes, but you make them so much more interesting in the way you capture the moment. thanks for the daily inspiration.

Congrats to getting the comment problem worked out. And congrats to the CBC coverage! =D

I wish I knew this cbc site existed before, it's amazing how they do flash newsletters with their streaming radio built in. Again congrats and here's to more to come! =)

intersteting contrast between the nice new vehicle and the guy behind the green milk crate

Posted by tanner at October 26, 2004 03:39 AM

I was thinking the same thing, Tanner. My initial thoughts were exclusively on the cool, shiny, new car. Only after coming back to the site a while later and re-evaluating the picture did I notice the man. He seems to be staring back at me, making me suddenly and embarrassingly conscious of my careless preoccupation with a toy (albeit a badass, shiny one). Then I notice the fresh dry-cleaning hanging in the back seat window, and wonder how much the car must have cost (with its spiffy red wheels), and how much the owner's (and my own) daily dry-cleaning bill must be compared to what the man needs just to struggle to survive. ...Awesome image, Sam.

Good to see you're back, and I agree with Tanner and BrotherAli, it's the contrast between the two elements of the shot that really makes this image.

Funny, I noticed the man first off, but then again maybe I'm slightly preoccupied with the homeless plight.

Sam, congrats on the CBCRadio hook up. You completely deserve it, and that's one spiffy little mag. Had a good time hanging out with some of your fellow Canadians at a wedding this past weekend. Man, can you Canadians knock some drinks back or what?!

renaming mt-comments.cgi to something else has eliminated pretty much -all- comment spam from my site. just a suggestion. :)

The red mini totally distracted me away from the seemingly fading background. Infact, I was too busy gawking at the rims to even notice the man back there.. and I only did after I read tanner's comment.

Nice shot, it's almost like a test. :)

Man's thought bubble: "The Mini Cooper is not much larger than my shopping cart but has way more clothes inside."

There's something a bit off about that licence plate. It's not like any number-letter sequence I've ever seen in Ontario. Were I not so baffled, I'd guess that it's either been Photoshopped to protect the identity of the vehicle owner, it's a reissue of a very old plate that finally gave up the ghost, it's a strangely customised plate, or else Ontario abandoned its XXXX-000 issuing sequence (which last I checked, was around ASxx-000).

Otherwise, it's a telling composition and juxtaposition. Very nice photo commentary.

I'm a regular reader of the cbc radio 3 newsletter and that's how I found this site. Your photos are simple and amazing.

Just wanted to say congrats on getting into the CBC newsletter. Also the photos are fantastic, you're doing a good job of making an overseas-Torontonian feel homesick. Keep it up!

As for the plate it is most likely that it was trasfered from an older vehicle to the new one. Some people grow attached to their old plates and choose to switch them to their new vehicle instead of getting a new plate.

I like this photo. It captures a very disturbing fact about life in Toronto and most major metropolitan cities. The contrast between the brand new car filled with what looks like freshly cleaned suits. The homeless man in clothing approaching the state of rags. The red of the car contrasting the green of the box. The new car contrasting the old age of the man.

I could go on for hours about this... in short.. Its interesting and thought provoking. Its great.

I do believe it is a vanity plate, or photoshopped to protect the innocent.

I've always thought Guelph (pronounced Gwelf) was the worst possible name for a city. It sounds like a euphanisim for vomit. As in "I drank so much at that guy from a few comments ago house last weekend that I guelphed on the sofa."

Great shot... too bad my Mini performs no better than the homeless mans shopping cart! never buy a "first year" model.

Posted by mik3 at October 26, 2004 10:19 PM

did he mind you taking this shot? did you ask him? just curious....
