Comments: plane at twelve

parody is always also a compliment...
especially this, considering it requires quite an effort : )

Posted by trinz at October 19, 2004 04:08 AM

Cinematic. Breathtaking.

Posted by Elias at October 19, 2004 04:23 AM

Jealousy is a big motivational driver for some people !

Whilst I found the comments on [daily dose of generic photos] funny, I also find it quite sad that someone would devote so much time and effort to this end.

Whoever he/she is, they should put as much effort into their own pictures. You never know, it may end up as good as your site !

Posted by Rik at October 19, 2004 05:01 AM

Talking about the decisive moment.
This is the one.

Good move Sam to put a link to the other site.

Whoever it is, he/she is a bit chemically imbalanced.

Posted by Henk Bakker at October 19, 2004 05:14 AM

Ahhh, you know you’ve well and truly arrived when you have a stalker, don’t you? My little friend is famous, I am so proud. Next you’ll be wearing those red string Kabbalah bracelets and taking OK magazine to court for printing unflattering pictures of you and the missis. I can’t wait.

Posted by Shirin at October 19, 2004 06:00 AM

Why this guy doesn't like your post processing?
I believe NOBODY does it better than SAM.

Posted by Babak at October 19, 2004 06:47 AM

Lol, what a compliment, even if it is wrapped up in a bundle of sarcasm; you must be delighted that someone would go to such lengths to parody ddoi. It will be interesting to see how long it sticks around for. If I were the creator, I don't think I would have selected the same name; 'Daily Dose of Mimicry' has a much better ring to it.

I can empathise with the 'shutter lag' comment concerning digital compacts. I've tried to shoot countless 'timed' images, with a Canon S1. To date, I've managed to achieve a pathetic level of success. Panning also remains a big 'I wish' for the S1. During the 'lag' period, you're thrown into total darkness and, consequently, left guessing whether the subject is still in frame.

Posted by Martin at October 19, 2004 07:11 AM

I never post here, but thanks for pointing out the alter ego site. This is both hilarious and quite flattering.

...and for the record, I like the saturation on your pictures, even when it is quite intense. I process my shots in a similar way. And since there's no such thing as a "right" way ...

Cheers Sam,
Pascal

Posted by Pascal at October 19, 2004 07:16 AM

At first, I thought you had manipulated the entire geography of TO to get this shot. Then I realized, you live in a building NORTH of Old City Hall. Thanks for not blowing my mind.

Posted by linda at October 19, 2004 08:15 AM

I think that the copy-cat site is pretty funny as well and kudos to you for creating such a nice site that others emulate it. Today's shot nice but not a hard image to make if you have the skills to do it. I have a D100 and find the shutter lag to be no more or less than my F5. Still, it *IS* a great shot and really enjoy your moments in time that you share with the world.

Airplane... amazing god of sky.
:)

Posted by Foxarts at October 19, 2004 09:21 AM

henk bakker....
watch it buddy. i don't appreciate your sly little comments. keep it to yourself dood.

sam-- the picture is cool because u managed to capture that nuclear explosion way out there in Lake Ontario.

do you think we survived?

Posted by chemical imbalance at October 19, 2004 09:35 AM

that's the guy who works in the clock and he lives on that floor on the tall building , He's going to work !

Posted by behr.o0o.z at October 19, 2004 09:42 AM

Hah! DDOGI. That's priceless. I hope both sites are captured on webarchive.com. It would be interesting to take a look back in a few years to see both sites and how ddogi mirrored ddoi. :)

Posted by Chris at October 19, 2004 10:24 AM

The guy who makes that photo's has the fastest shutter on that site of the ocean (the parody photolog)

Posted by rene at October 19, 2004 10:43 AM

Imitation is the highest form of flattery...

But this site is so much better than the knockoff gives it credit for.

Posted by Jonesy at October 19, 2004 11:00 AM

i think it's interesting that in this shot you can see that almost all the windows in the building to the left have a tree, a chair, or both in them.

as for the other site, i admire his/her dedication to immitation. the mock-ups are fun and the comments are amusing. it makes me appreciate your work even more.

Posted by windy at October 19, 2004 11:06 AM

hhahahaah, good on ya for posting that site. now i have 2 doses daily, i am fully innoculated.

Posted by deadmanguru at October 19, 2004 11:32 AM

Hehe cool pictures on both sites :D daily dose of art and humor combined!

Posted by Aeis at October 19, 2004 01:03 PM

Fantastic shot man! Oh how I pine for a digital SLR... :(

Thankfully, a lady friend I've recently become aquainted with just obtained a nice one for me to play with. :)

Posted by Seth Thomas Rasmussen at October 19, 2004 01:34 PM

the parody site is sort of stalkerish, and more copying, not enough parody to be that funny. I find it sort of creepy/insulting.

Posted by Emily at October 19, 2004 01:38 PM

Well Sam, all you have to do now is post a self portrait, so Generic has to reveal his/her/its identity.

Posted by Henk Bakker at October 19, 2004 01:46 PM

I love this shot and the other website is hysterical. It certainly does take quite a bit of work. I just wonder what the time delay is from the time your photo is posted to the time the generic one is up.

I love this site! I visit daily. Keep up the good work!

Posted by Michelle at October 19, 2004 02:25 PM

That copy-cat is a total wierdo.

not to mention the photo was photo-shopped.

well looks like you have inspired someone without a real life.

Posted by Alix at October 19, 2004 02:44 PM

Well he's got a point, sort of, it's hard to post a picture every day without a lot of them displaying a kind of abstract formalism. Some people might expect "lifetime" shots every day perhaps...?

But then, it's caused some interesting comments for once, rather than the usual, "Wow, I really like your sense of color and shape"

Hope he/she keeps it going.

Posted by Aegir at October 19, 2004 03:17 PM

The site seems to be made by someone calling himself avatar-x.

This page http://www.uer.ca/avatar-x/default.asp has some of the same pictures used on the parody site.

Posted by otto at October 19, 2004 03:24 PM

or maybe, the guy who made the parody site is just copying avatar-x's photos.

maybe they are friends or something since the site is on the same domain.

Instead of slagging the "other guy", give Mr. Generic a big THANK YOU for a great laugh.
Sam & Mr. Generic are a great tag team.
Some of the more uptight folks need to lighten up.
And...in a way, THANKS for BOTH sites Sam!!!

Posted by visitor at October 19, 2004 03:31 PM

You have competition! That pic with the flashy light thing, his was such a sad imitation.. I suggest you put something so difficult/weird that he would have a hard time reproducing anything good enough.

Posted by Emily at October 19, 2004 03:44 PM

So you think I’m the one who’s copying, huh? Just because I’m not an early riser like Mr Lomo advertiser here. So I like a bit of a lie in in the mornings. Does that make me a copy cat? Just because I don’t set my alarm for some ungodly hour in the morning to get up and post photos?
Mr Visitor, thank you for thanking me and you are welcome.
Emily, stop getting yer knickers in a twist/wind/loop.
Otto, Ey?

I think you could learn from this guy. Ad a few more planes Also a boat, and some birds, Whats one plane when you could have five? I think thats great. Keep him on his toes for tomorrow!

Posted by designguy at October 19, 2004 04:24 PM

Sam,
How did you find out about this person's site? Did someone you tell you about it or did he/she contact you? :)

Well, it sure did give me a laugh, and of course I'll still come to your site first. :)

Posted by mike b at October 19, 2004 04:38 PM

CI, 9:35, dude? I haven't heard that word since the sixties.

Posted by Henk Bakker at October 19, 2004 06:35 PM

Okay, this isn't about the other site, amusing though it was. Did no one find that it reminded them of 9/11 images? I loved Sam's photo - gorgeous- but it was a bit disturbing at the same time. It was lovely to see a close up of the clock face, when one is only accustomed to viewing it from the ground.

Posted by Kathy at October 19, 2004 07:05 PM

I find the geography of this photo very puzzling. I am in question as to its authenticity. City hall is quite some distance from the lake, let alone Toronto island, yet look at the size of the trees in the photo. I can see the very trunks & branches of the things. I dont live in your building, but I have been in many buildings around your location and have never seen a spacial distortion like this one in my life. even buildings located closer to the lake do no have a veiw of the island like this. The distances are just not adding up. I am dispointed if this is an altered photo which I have no choice, but to believe it is, unless you can explain how space suddenly became warped in toronto as to allow downtown old city hall to suddenly be located next to harbor front. inconsistancies: (a)the size of the trees is not consistant with the distance. (B)Vanishing buildings from the toronto skyline that would be in the path of old city hall and toronto island. (C) the nuclear explosion as it has been called in the middle of the sky appears to be an attempt to hide a second skyline of clouds connected with the toronto island airport photo that appears pasted behind the buildings. (D) Planes that small dont fly in the city only over the water and from city hall would appear much smaller. id like to see more photos linked to this one displaying how this is possible. Or in future if you alter photos please just let us know. its cool, but maybe not real

Posted by scott at October 19, 2004 07:32 PM

i didnt understan what was the deal with "shutter lag" because i dont know what is it.... i like the pic because is different, past pics didint have the originality in here (no offense). still generic daily dose photos' pic had more planes =P

Posted by mariel at October 19, 2004 07:39 PM

Hahaha! ddogp is great. What a great effort in parody. I love it.

Posted by Keith at October 19, 2004 09:47 PM

I do agree, I don't know what city hall this is, but it's blocks and blocks from the lake. Besides, the view would be blocked my (many) more buildings. Maybe it's just because it was taken from another building, higher up. But it doesn't make sense to me either.

Posted by Emily at October 19, 2004 10:41 PM

thanks sam. I appreciate the explaination. the way the lens compresses the distance would also explain why the buildings look a bit 2 dimensional like a hollywood back drop. its quite a cool effect. This lesson in camera lenses was very interesting. Thanks. Let me withdraw any and all doubts about this photo. Its great. Thanks again for the quick reply.

Posted by scott at October 20, 2004 12:07 AM

nice shot, and good timing. but the 'here' link that's supposed to show us an example of the effect doesn't work. when you get a chance, i'd like to see that.

Posted by rich at October 20, 2004 12:13 AM

NAH MAN.. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE TRUE DAILY DOSE SITE, AND YOURS IS IT. DON'T WATCH THAT OTHER KNOCK OFF SITE
