Yesterday (September 17th) was my birthday, and that INCREDIBLE sunset after a dull, grey day was my birthday present from God. I was soooo hoping that you would be out there capturing the wondrous skies with your camera, and here you are. Another lovely present for me, and I wholeheartedly thank you for it!

What a luck, perfect time at a perfect place with perfect shot.

Posted by izulismail at September 18, 2004 04:26 AM

I like the middle one best in that it highlights the transition from day to night.

Posted by john at September 18, 2004 06:17 AM

It's really beautiful, and the first and third almost suggest a nuclear explosion , which is in fact the case with the sun !
Thanks for all your other pictures, I love the ones with iranian landscapes.Never been there, but it creates desire…

I was sure I'd be seeing some of these today on your site. I left work (where I have a great view of sky and horizon) and instead of shooting downtown as usual went home to do some work. A little later I look up and see this deep red sky out the window and I just could have kicked myself for missing it. Argh - glad you managed to capture the wonderful sunset yesterday.

Gorgeous sky, almost looks like a thousand jets have passed leaving their contrails.

Posted by miles at September 18, 2004 07:36 AM

Beautiful photos. Scarborough struggles when it come to taking photo's of the sky. My area is full of so many tall trees. So it would have been a great challenge to find some place to go take nice photo's like the ones you took. Keep up the good work

Posted by Krishna at September 18, 2004 07:46 AM

Really amazing. You must go into a frenzy when the sky is like that.

Posted by nantel at September 18, 2004 08:38 AM

Posted by brenda at September 18, 2004 09:37 AM

I knew you were going to take some great pictures last night. Unfortunately I left work late and missed it.

Posted by Jamb at September 18, 2004 10:14 AM

I knew you would catch this. This shots. Awesome.

Posted by sigma at September 18, 2004 10:43 AM

I was on the 8th floor of an apartment building in Ottawa and we had the same sky. I looked at a satellite shot and this is the edge of the remnants of Hurricane Ivan!

Posted by Bruce at September 18, 2004 12:15 PM

How did I know you would take pictures last night and post them up? I was staring out of my window and could've sworn you were busy taking pictures. Great job

Posted by rz at September 18, 2004 12:23 PM

same as rz, i was standing at work - looked out the window and the first thing I thought f was that Sam is probably out taking some really sweet pics

Posted by Ben at September 18, 2004 12:46 PM

I looked out my office window that night and saw a striking reddish magenta sky. It was almost like the second photo.

I had to stop everything and just stared into the sky

Posted by go_there at September 18, 2004 01:07 PM

THANK GOD you got these pics. I was on my way back home late last night and I saw this sky and I was hoping in the back of my mind that you were taking pictures, especially because I didnt have a camera on hand to take any myself.

Its amazing, and this morning the sky is absolutely blue and cloudless.

in the car, driving in HW7, longshot with the red horizon in frame:
- It's breathtaking, I wish I had my camera with me.
_ [wise siter] Do you think you could really capture it's beauty?
- errr..no (thinking : no worries,i think Sam will capture it)

After reading these comments, I can't help wondering how many more hundreds (thousands!!) of people, such as myself, were standing there thinking "GEEZZZ! I hope Sam is catching this unbelievably spectacular sunset!!"
Another good one Sam. Thanks.

makes one feel thankful to be alive doesn't it?

Posted by Ali at September 18, 2004 11:37 PM

Oh wow! I'm so glad you got that sky! We had it in Ottawa last night too. We watched this mass of clouds gradually building, and the colours deepening and spreading across the sky, and then at about 7:20 the sky just bloomed. We were walking toward the National Arts Centre, and were at the edge of the bridge over the Rideau Canal, and saw such a sight. The Parliament buildings were silhouetted against an amazing flaming canvas, with the figure at the top of the cenotaph -- the national war memorial -- seeming to stand guard beside it. What an awesome sight.

This is the best sky I have seen all summer, I was on the TTC when I saw it, and it was as rich and beautiful as the colours you haved captured with your camera. It was one of those very special events. I think everyone secretly admires such wonderful sites, when they transfor a city into such a wonderful array of colours, the formations of these clouds were so lucid and surreal that it makes me wonder if I will ever see clouds like this again. Thank you Sam for spectacularily capturing some of that beauty, now I will always remember the beauty I witnesed that sunset. Your photos bring Joy to people, and make me appreciate the mystery of life more.

Posted by jacques at September 20, 2004 11:21 AM
