the color version is better ...

Blue and Orange :: Heaven and Hell

Posted by wakhy at July 23, 2004 02:37 AM

Colour!! Definetely colour.

Posted by tatireti at July 23, 2004 02:55 AM

This reminds me of those photomosaics; this is absolutely stunning, one of your best yet (and *that* is saying something) =)

Posted by myla at July 23, 2004 02:56 AM

COLOR!

Posted by Balázs at July 23, 2004 03:01 AM

Definitely the colour version. Like you said, the blue/orange combination is stunning, much more contrast than the b/w version.

Posted by garr at July 23, 2004 03:03 AM

The colour is fantastic - such beautiful reflections. Perhaps you needed to have the black and white as the main pic, and te colour as the alternative.

I think we have been spoiled!!! :)

Posted by Richard Earney at July 23, 2004 03:05 AM

Saturation, saturation!

Posted by Q at July 23, 2004 03:11 AM

definitely prefer the color version. i think the b/w image loses some of the tonal variation and i agree that the orange and blue color contrast is very striking. i think you made the right choice!

Posted by ana at July 23, 2004 03:13 AM

The coloured one is better, cause if you know it's in the distillery district you just think: "True!"

Posted by Martin Fiausch at July 23, 2004 03:16 AM

Definitely color !

Posted by Poopak at July 23, 2004 04:10 AM

The B/W version give sadness and melancholy. it seems that the sky is impotent, above the broken windows. The Colour version it seems better, to me too, but is more funny. The broken windows aren't element of restlessness and the blu sky is reassuring.
Beautiful Work! :)

Posted by aladin & the genius at July 23, 2004 04:40 AM

obviously color!
it's like a film in some slides!!!
detects all around the bldg.
the blue sky & the hot orange fire :)

Posted by Siiimaaa at July 23, 2004 04:43 AM

Colour! Definitely colour. The contrast is fantastic and it's just lost in the b/w picture.

Posted by migueldavid at July 23, 2004 05:01 AM

I don't think there's any question in my mind. Colour.

Posted by george at July 23, 2004 05:12 AM

I've always been a fan of pictures pairing a stunningly blue sky with another tone that is much warmer... oranges in particular. I vote color.

Posted by leon at July 23, 2004 06:38 AM

As eveyone else says, Colour!
I really like the oranges, and the blue is just amazing!

Posted by William Spaetzel at July 23, 2004 06:55 AM

Colour of course!

The B/W version loses a bit of the picture. It would make sense to use B/W to support some sentiments, but this picture also features some game with colours on the windows that would be lost.

Posted by Ioannis at July 23, 2004 06:57 AM

color

Posted by Brian at July 23, 2004 07:10 AM

Going with the crowd, colour. Definitely.

Posted by cmb at July 23, 2004 07:17 AM

b&w. i see things in color everyday.

Posted by + bzt at July 23, 2004 07:21 AM

Well, I hate to be the one who disagrees, but the moment I saw the black and white version I said to myself "Yes".

Posted by Fred Henderson at July 23, 2004 07:22 AM

The colour version for sure. It's absolutely stunning.

Posted by josie at July 23, 2004 07:23 AM

colour

Posted by NEGAR at July 23, 2004 07:33 AM

The colour image is the better choice. The sky is a nice contrast.

Posted by Clarence at July 23, 2004 07:36 AM

I like both for different reasons. BUT, I think the color is so unique. I'd love to see a separate photo of each of those windows.

Posted by Stef Noble at July 23, 2004 08:58 AM

Definitely color.

Posted by Karim at July 23, 2004 08:58 AM

colour! It almost looks like a mural painting.

Posted by sigma at July 23, 2004 09:01 AM

The b&w has the better looking sky, but the building looks a little flat and loses some of the tones that are in the colour version. The decaying boards look ace in colour.

I had a similar shot lined up for next week but I think I've been outdone pretty convincingly! Keep 'em coming.

Posted by James at July 23, 2004 09:05 AM

color all the way!

Posted by BradKnapp at July 23, 2004 09:14 AM

I like both. The b&w I notice the light of the windows and clouds on the left. But the color of the windows is so interesting. That patina-ed copper is beautiful.

Posted by Sheryl at July 23, 2004 09:17 AM

COLOUR. the windows look like amber stones... :) very pretty.

Posted by maria at July 23, 2004 09:19 AM

defintaely black and white. it looks way sadder and sexier.

and colour is spelled with a "u' you fools. this is canada!

Posted by chemical imbalance at July 23, 2004 09:26 AM

Migueldavid said the colour is lost in the black and white version .lol.

Posted by Matt at July 23, 2004 09:26 AM

i like both.

Posted by - kandi champagne cook - at July 23, 2004 09:36 AM

The Black and White is very nice, but the colour shot is more interesting. The windows resemble a stained glass mural. As always, beautiful work.

Posted by Keith Fox at July 23, 2004 09:37 AM

Definitely the color shot. The contrast between the blue and the orange/gold is just awesome!

Posted by Dan LaMee at July 23, 2004 09:48 AM

color rawks!

Posted by blairc at July 23, 2004 09:52 AM

Color. Much gentler.

Posted by saeed ghaffari at July 23, 2004 09:57 AM

colour. Wow - great great shot

Posted by Larisa at July 23, 2004 10:05 AM

This is a tough one...I like them both for different reasons. The B&W has this ghetto/industrial feel that is much more creepy than the color, and I like that.

But the color is great simply because of the colors. The blue and orange contrast each other like nothing I have seen before. I am curious to know if the orange is reflected light, or is it coming from behind the window?

Posted by Bob at July 23, 2004 10:32 AM

Mmmmh, can't decide myself between the color one and the colour one ;-)

Posted by Sébastien at July 23, 2004 10:42 AM

Definitely the color version. The B&W version looks flat. The color version is more dynamic, appealing.

Posted by Anthony at July 23, 2004 10:51 AM

Best would be the black and white, but with the colour added from the other one.

Posted by Scott Murdoch at July 23, 2004 10:54 AM

Colour, for sure. We've all seen the black and white version of this photo (although rarely as good as Sam's).

As always, I'm amazed how good Sam's stuff is. In this case I would have mindlessly applied the 1/3 rule, but 1/2 sky 1/2 window is so much better here, for contrast.

Posted by David Sky at July 23, 2004 11:00 AM

I have to vote for the color! Definitely the color one, this is fabulous!

Posted by cathy at July 23, 2004 11:07 AM

To me there is no question: the colour one is my favourite.
The B&W is nice, but this one is much more special. The colours in the window are a bit like leaked oil, wonderful pattern. Together with the great sky, it makes it an attractive photo, fascinating......

Posted by Irene at July 23, 2004 11:48 AM

colour

Posted by effat at July 23, 2004 12:34 PM

yes, definitely color.

Posted by gordon at July 23, 2004 12:37 PM

i like the black and white much better. looks like the b&w pic has more dept

Posted by hamidreza at July 23, 2004 01:31 PM

Most definitely the color version. The oily windows against the blue cloudy skies is magnificent.

Posted by Jasper at July 23, 2004 01:39 PM

i love both pictures- i think if the sky in the colored picture had more of orange and red.. kind of like the windows on the building- then it would almost look like the windows are reflecting the sky, and i think the sky in the black and white photo would look better if there was more contrast in it.. but none-the-less it is an amazing picture.

Posted by Aaron at July 23, 2004 01:44 PM

I like the color, for the greater variety of contrast.

The BW seems a little too dark overall.

To evaluate, I lined up the windows to perfectly overlap, then clicked from one to the other, which made a cool effect. Can you set it up so when the mouse is on the photo, it switches to BW, and show color when the mouse is in the margins?

Thanks for offering us both and asking what we think.

Posted by Heidi at July 23, 2004 01:46 PM

Color rocks...

Posted by Jason Wall at July 23, 2004 02:09 PM

the color one is definately good for a friday.

Posted by jess at July 23, 2004 03:01 PM

Colour. Yes. Good God yes.

Each and every window pane seems to contain a great photo in it's own right.

Keep them coming.

Posted by Dan at July 23, 2004 03:26 PM

I go for the "kleurenfoto" (color ;-)

Posted by Rob at July 23, 2004 03:39 PM

COLOR!!!!

Posted by chigirl at July 23, 2004 03:41 PM

The B&W and the Colour versions are DIFFERENT PHOTOGRAPHS in that each communicates something different from the other. The B&W is brooding, threatening and ominous. The colour is friendlier and warmer.
I prefer the dramatic statement of the B&W.

Posted by Bob at July 23, 2004 05:08 PM

ostad jan !!!! just color !

Posted by M Reza at July 23, 2004 05:12 PM

color - always color. To me, there is much more depth in the color version. However, the B&W is very nice as well.

Posted by conor at July 23, 2004 05:21 PM

The black and white has a definitely creepy feel -- I'm trying to think of the film it makes me think of, but nothing's happening. What a contrast, with the colour creating a very positive feeling out of a scene of dereliction.

Posted by macbeth at July 23, 2004 06:03 PM

Best would be the black and white, but with the coloured 'windows' added from the other one.

Posted by ila at July 23, 2004 06:11 PM

The color is too good to pass up. Those windows are awesome.. and against the blue sky.. near perfection.

Posted by Tudy at July 23, 2004 06:41 PM

the COLOUR!!! :)

just the dirty yet colourful windows of the building to the fresh clear sky..... it's jsut awsome like that :)

Posted by ecila at July 23, 2004 06:46 PM

I love the coloured one. The contrast between the complementary orange and blue is amazing.

Posted by erica at July 23, 2004 07:11 PM

When I saw the colour first, I thought the black and white couldn't possibly compete, but the black and white has an institutional feel (could be the outside of a long abandoned psych hospital just east of Toronto!!!) I feel the B&W conveys way more, but it seems I'm in the minority. I'm outnumbered by colour-lovers.

CLICKING TO THE BLACK & WHITE, AFTER VIEWING THE WARM COLOR SHOT, WAS ALMOST STARTLING BUT FUN, BOTH ARE EXCELLANT AND COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER.
THANKS FOR YOUR WORK SAM, A GREAT GETAWAY FROM THE DAILY ROUTINE. MY UNCLE IN TO INTRODUCED ME TO YOUR SIGHT, NOW A MUST VIEW, HERE IN MICHIGAN.

Posted by FRANK at July 24, 2004 08:42 AM

Black and white!!!! Great pictures... keep it up!

Posted by Patrick at July 24, 2004 09:15 AM

i think both would look good together.

Posted by Amy Riedel at July 24, 2004 11:09 AM

i like the color better, but the cool thing about the b&w is that your eyes can trick you into seeing the sky as water.

Posted by charity at July 24, 2004 11:18 AM

It looks magic I like it !

Posted by deSdA at July 24, 2004 11:42 AM

The bright picture is better I think

Posted by desda at July 24, 2004 11:44 AM

I prefer the black and white.

Posted by Eric Hancock at July 24, 2004 12:12 PM

i vote for the colour. the b&w version of it is too sad in my opinion.

Posted by hadi at July 24, 2004 12:39 PM

b/w - seems to capture the texture better- altho the color is awesome

Posted by kp at July 24, 2004 10:27 PM

Colour

Posted by Soheila at July 25, 2004 02:45 AM

colour, I think, although greyscale looks good too

Posted by lmt32 at July 25, 2004 07:23 AM

omg - 80 comments for a photo! that's unheard of. :)
i'll be lucky if i get one. haha.

but this entry deserves it. the colours are great. are the windows reflecting the sunlight, by any chance?

Posted by Emily at July 25, 2004 09:59 AM

beauty. def the color one.

Posted by quarlo at July 25, 2004 12:16 PM

Three words: stunning!

Posted by Edwinek at July 25, 2004 01:34 PM

Colour. I love the fiery windows.

Posted by Hannah at July 25, 2004 10:03 PM

hey color... a thousand times color

Posted by mariel at July 26, 2004 01:21 AM

In posing the question with a link to the B&W version, haven't you kind of had it both ways already? ;-)

If it were me, I'd leave it just as it is: color version with a link to B&W. That way people can see both.

Posted by Adam M. at July 26, 2004 02:12 AM

I'd go for colour in this case. A lot more "feel" to the picture.

Posted by Nagaraj at July 26, 2004 03:46 AM

I prefere the color one... blue+orange is stronger than b&w here...

Posted by dam at July 26, 2004 10:01 AM

color, reminds me of a Klimt...

Posted by gwen at July 26, 2004 10:38 PM

Great color combination!

Posted by Rolle at July 27, 2004 07:11 AM

I like both, but for some reason I like the black and white, the pattern made by the wood/glass seems to have some sort of resemblance to the pattern of the clouds, either one is great though, great work, bareenkala :)

Posted by kaveh at July 28, 2004 12:25 PM

The black and white is more midwest-america during the depression; the colour is beautiful.

Posted by christen at July 28, 2004 01:25 PM

I love the color! Normall I love B&W, but this one is the right choice!

Posted by Molly at July 28, 2004 02:18 PM

fantastic. I like the colour, the upper window panes look like the are showing an explosion.

THIS PHOTO IS CURRENTLY #1 FOR AMOUNT OF COMMENTS, AT ALMOST 100!

Posted by Michael at August 17, 2004 08:33 PM

After reviewing 80+ comments, The color lovers dominate and many B&W critics are negative. Precious few, like this oldtimer, like both. The color version is terrifically enhanced by virtue of the combined "fire and sooty" colors while the B&W is magnificent for its facinating textural qualities. It would be great as a six foot wide photo mural in a gallery or museum.

Posted by Tim at August 18, 2004 10:49 PM

I really like both versions. You were so lucky with this shot to have such a beautiful sky! The colors in the broken glass are x-tremely interesting, and definitely makes the window a focal point for this photo. Cool!!!

Posted by tmar at August 19, 2004 09:44 PM

definitely black and white. the colour is distracting. there's much more to get to in this shot.

Posted by mina at August 31, 2004 11:33 PM

i love this picture. it is like stained glass in a strange church somewhere.
my favorite!
