Comments: wall of patterns

hmm...I think I've been there on Yonge street before but not this scene....interesting view....nice....

This would have been a good image for the flash magnifier you demonstrated a couple of days ago. It would be nice to see the same shot with the creeper on the wall in full bloom.

Is Toronto only geometrical ???

Posted by Tatou at April 21, 2004 05:49 AM

Neat! I first thought it was a bunch of thumbnails. And yes Toronto is very "square" ;-P

abstract painting! nice view and nice shot.

yes, your formula works very well, but honestly it is becoming a little tiresome. I'm waiting for something experimental, something that sets you apart from the vast and growing crowd of digital photographers. Sure it looks nice, and yes, everyone will praise, but your skill, camera and location could be yeilding more creative, less mundane results.

Interesting this one. You can take a picture of something so natural, and still it looks very good. Keep on!

WONDERFUL

I just wanted to disagree with Matt, I think this site is different from the pack, and is experimental!!
I check it out every morning, and never imagined that Toronto was such a beautiful city!!
Keep it up...

formulaic? Mundane? Matt, pardon me but you are clueless

this is very striking - a good shot

Posted by Larisa at April 21, 2004 09:30 AM

good call matt, right on.

I think you're all nuts - except Sam. Sam knows what's what.

You have an amazing eye for the minutia and composition that convert the mundane into the spectacular and it was especially evident in your picture of the walkway connecting the TD Tower to the E&Y Tower with the Royal Bank building in the background. I have walked many of the same streets for years but never saw the beauty in my surroundings. Keep the photos coming!

Matt is right though. Everyday I want to express my gratitude to WVS but I figure it might not be appropriate! We’re not spoiling this guy for good, he really has something to offer to variety of people and I’m sure there has been and will be something pleasing for Matt, too (even though that is not the mission of art I think).

true that the meaning of art is not to please the viewers, but why have a 'comment section' and why even post the pictures on the net? Matt is allowed his thoughts just as much as anyone offering praise. They are viable and realistic. So all you Sam worshippers can stop degrading him for his thoughts.

tatou has a point.

Swittch: Although you misunderstood my note, still have a constructive point there.

:O, in all my years of living in toronto, i have never ever seen that scene before! is that a wall of a building? O_O;; or what? :O lol

Posted by ecila at April 21, 2004 04:30 PM

It's a wall along a park (Cloud Gardens). IIRC, it was developed along with the never-built Bay-Adelaide centre.

If anyone watches Structures on Rogers, it was featured a few weeks ago.

i do see your point and agree with it babak, i was mostly reffering to some of the others...namely: megabe, WP, and larisa. I used your comment to add to mine, thanks.

Just as art is, so is photography, and this medium will impress many people, or not impress many people.
I, for one, enjoy Toronto, and hang out very close to where Sam takes his photos....when I see a picture like todays, not only do I see a great picture to my eye, but also a landmark I end up looking out for, as I wouldn't have imagined that same photo with the same camera on my back.

Great work, and whats gorgeous to one persons eye doesn't necessarily please the next persons. In Sam's case, its many who enjoy, and few who don't.

Interesting...

Toronto seems like a good place to live photographic wise :-D, as for the picture ... wow!

Posted by Marijn at April 21, 2004 06:29 PM

To all those who've disagreed with my comment, well I respect your opinion and do understand your viewpoints. Sam is different from the pack, in so much as he is quite a lot better, in almost all aspects of his photos. They are usually quite aesthetically pleasing and he displays what seems to be an innate sense of composition. We won't get into an argument about Art and who it's for (artist or audience), but anyway, my point is on the stylistic sameness that I've seen as far as I've looked back into the archives. And when I said that Sam needs to differentiate himself and his style from other photographers, what I probably really meant was that he needed to push his own selfimposed boundarys of his style. Not that I am anyone to dictate the direction of Sam, but its just some constructive critism, a mere suggestion. Thanks to those who've read into my comment though. Matt

A colorful quilt in the middle of the city!

-NICE WORK ;o)

Posted by p23e at April 21, 2004 09:42 PM

neat shot- perhaps the guys that don't like what they see should look at photo sites that suit their tastes.

Posted by asdf at April 21, 2004 11:26 PM

i think this photo is great, i like how the wall looks like something erasing the regular upper pattern and how the hand railings give it a sense of scale.
