Interesting idea with the Flash. I don't see it working too much now... perhaps in some other photographs?

Nice effect, but don't use it on every photo. Just in rare cases. But that's just my opinion.

U should send this one to FUJIFILM for their ad campaign about even a parking lot or back alley is beautiful.

That’s great; I don’t think it works as well as the last one, but still good.

I love the image today, the brick texture, the bike, and the bit of blue. Wonderful.
Can you tell me what camera you use, I am assuming digital because of the speed with which you post your images

This photo is a good test but I find myself stopping on the bike and wanting to reshape the magnifier to a composition I like. I think it's a question of how interactive you want to get. The flash magnifier might work best with photographs with dense information. The magnifier allows you to select new smaller compositions and find new relationships within an image. If there are a number of object and/or people relationships to find in the the image then there is potential for the viewer to create their own different narratives. If there is for example, one of those exteme close up's you're so good at, there might be potential for finding smaller, good abstract compositions within the larger image, then the viewer can feel active part in discovery. If the size and shape of the magnifier could be changed by the viewer, just as we do in cropping in Photoshop, it would be great fun. Thanks for giving me something to think about. viv

the maginfier is a great idea.

another option... PC users can right-click on the flash object (image) and choose zoom-in or zoom-out from the right-click menu.

excellent work.

Great photo and nice to see that there are some people who know to use flash in an intelligent way. I'd still like a link to a hi-res version of the picture as well so one could take it in as a whole!

Ahah! The return of the magnifier! I'm glad to see you decided to use this again. Great photo, too!

it works for me... rusty

Posted by rusty at June 13, 2004 06:28 PM

OK.... I like the picture, but it's too simple for the flash. Don't get me wrong... the Flash is off the chain.
NEXT... to whoever had the brilliant idea (someone by the name of "me" (weirdo))of saying they saw a man with a cigar in the window.- That was not funny.. i tried VERy hard to see what you saw. If you did it on purpose, then ha ha ha that was pretty good. If not.. then i think you suffer of a compulsive lying disorder or you hallucinate buddy.

you can't see someone with a cigar in the window?

saw this same FLASH magnifier thing on a web store used for a BOSS guitar effects rack. thought it was a cool idea, but was surprised to see it here. as i think about it, what impresses me about it is what it tells me about your sensitivity to your medium. although these are photographs (and pretty great ones), they are also explicitly 'digital' photographs or 'web' photographs. traditionalists might prefer "magnifier off" but just the presence of the magnifier is a reminder that this is a new and different medium - with new and different boundaries that we are just beginning to understand and explore. exciting.
