there is SO much to discover in the details of this photo: splendid! and i love the wash of golden light..
Posted by lynn at April 1, 2004 01:40 AMWow, Bre-x Eh?
Posted by nikki at April 1, 2004 01:48 AMWhat in tarnation is BRE-X? And why would one want to pay $10-Canadian for it!?
Oh, and awesome pic, Sam. I love the way the umbrella-toting pedestrian looks totally oblivious to all the super deals on Passport Photos, discount souvenirs, and BRE-X Certificates, as he/she walks right on by. :)
Posted by BrotherAli at April 1, 2004 02:58 AMGreat shot man!
Posted by Shaahin at April 1, 2004 03:09 AMI Think these pictures on the site are great, I've only been in Toronto once, but it took my heart away.
I Think the city is a great place, for to just wander around.
I've got family in Canada, but this message is being written from the Netherlands, where I live and have been born.
But since I have been to Toronto, it is my most favourite city by far.
PS is it possible to get some photographs, in a larger format then shown on the site?
Because there might be some photographs which I want to print out on Poster Format!
let me know
Yours Truly
Frans
do not apologize - the picture is not too tall, it's exactly as tall as it should be to work :D
it's great
That is one great shot. It pulls you in wonderfully. I also like the pedestrian oblivious to the greates deals on Earth. It adds a touch of that subtle Canadian humor I so admire.
Posted by Bojan at April 1, 2004 09:02 AMgreat pic! out of curiosity, did you stitch this together, or just have one really wide angle lens?
Posted by jamie at April 1, 2004 10:25 AMBre-X is a gold stock from the 90s (pre tech bubble) that ended being a scam with the added allure of murder against the backdrop of the steamy Phillipines - but only after it ran up quite a bit and had most Canadian investors in a tizzy. It was a foreshadowing of today's corporate crime spree.
Posted by justin at April 1, 2004 10:53 AMFor those curious about Bre-x it was a Canadian mining company whose stocks went through the roof over some Indonesian mines that held a motherlode of gold (which turned out not to be true). Due to alot of web hype some people paid over $280 per stock and alot of people got hosed. More than the $10 offered here and way more than its actual value of $0. Great shot though Sam!

beautiful!
Posted by otherside at April 1, 2004 12:53 PMthat is hillarious. i honestly might go buy one of those breX stocks. although it is true that $10 is a rip.
the detail in this shot is indeed awesome btw
Posted by smackm at April 1, 2004 01:01 PMnice shot. yeah it's tall. are these stitched photos? ok, i know you can't answer me. hehe
i wish i could go to that shop!!
Posted by c_an at April 1, 2004 01:50 PMIs that a person in the very top left window?
cool pic :)
Posted by Travis at April 1, 2004 06:51 PMI am distracted by that glow on the left edge of the pic. I like the one from yesterday better.
Posted by Boreo at April 1, 2004 11:28 PMlove this photo,
i like the balance of the signage and how they pull me down to the storefront (even withought the arrows)
how fitting that a once fabled Bre-X stock should end up being sold at a discount store in the financial district of Toronto.
Posted by go there at April 3, 2004 03:10 PMYou're right to post it this big... Only then the hugeness of the signs is really clear. Hard to miss them.
