Comments: Nine

Having discovered your photographs only a very few months ago I am feeling hugely sorry already in anticipation of having them no more.
But congratulations on 9 YEARS - that is NO MEAN FEAT.
I've been doing something similar in a more private way for almost exactly 4 years so I know it's not an easy thing to do on a daily basis.

Not to be greedy (well, I guess it is) but why just one more year?

Thank you!

I've been following daily for 6 of those years and have enjoyed every shot (of course more than others). Best of luck of in your last year and thank you for presenting the great city of Toronto in such a unique and wonderful light.

I've been visiting since almost the beginning and will be until the end. Thanks for all the great images of the city I love. Even though I haven't lived in TO since 1977, I still call Toronto my home, and your blog has helped keep me connected.

One of the first things I do everyday when I open my laptop is to see what the ddoi is. I’ll keep on doing the same thing till the last and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

I have had your photoblog as my homepage for the last 5-6 years! It's going to be a sad day when I open up my browser and there isn't a new pic up! I've not only told everybody I know about your photoblog, but a even went as far as changing my family and friends homepages from Google to yours....that is when they weren't looking;and they loved it! You made me realize my love of photography Sam, and I thank you. It would be a privilege to learn the tricks of the trade from you, and in the near future "copy your style" and start my own photoblog! .........It's sad to see it end.......but glad it was started! Wish all the best Sam!

Posted by Andrew at July 4, 2012 07:57 AM

Thank you for your 9 years of excellence Sam! It is quite a dedication to do anything for 10 years, let alone every single day of those 10 years. I will miss it 365 days from now, but as we all know, all great things must come to an end.
Thanks for sharing your photos,

Wow, happy anniversary... I think I've been following you for a good 5 or 6 of those years. DDOI is one of my daily pleasures.

Which begs the question? Are you looking at starting something new after year 10? (I'm an optimist... I rather think there's something new coming than just not having ddoi in my life anymore)

Congrats again though!!!

Since then, I can't even begin to count the number of people who have walked by my screen, said, "damn, that's an awesome picture," and have themselves become hooked.

You're awesome, and your photos have brightened my days for almost all of those 9 years you've been posting them.

Thank you so much. I look forward to what this next year brings.

I'm the "camera guy" among my friends and family. Quite a number of people have tried to get me to pursue photography professionally and I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from it as a hobby. But it was this site that inspired me to take a point&shoot with me on a trip to BC and to later get my first DSLR. Sad to hear this will be its last year, but looking forward to whatever's next. I hope there'll be an archive of some kind. Maybe it's time I order the books.

Good luck!

Sam, Sam, Sam! You are the reason I strived to better myself in photography. The reason I went from a point and shoot 8 years ago to a beginners SLR and have recently upgraded to a semi-pro level SLR.

You taught me the importance of capturing foreground, and sharp! Making the whole scene be the moment.

You taught me to try new things, be creative.

You were even kind enough to reply to an e-mail I sent you with an image from my point and shoot all those years ago offering me advice.

This time next year my browsers homepage will have to change ):

Thank you though, your constant effort to share exceptional photography has been greatly appreciated.

Dear Sam,

I starting visiting this photoblog a couple of months after you started. In this period, there have been times I visited your photos multiple times a day and periods where I went through a week's photos quickly in one visit. A time where you inspired me to buy a camera together with a friend back in 2004 and starting photography, which has already gone to a decline since a year ago. I just want to say that you've been an inspiration and I have often praised your determination to carry this project on despite your busy life. I'm happy there will be more of your work, even if it's not daily.

Sam:
I can't believe it's been 9 years already. I stumbled on your blog at some point in 2004, and have gone through every post since, whether that be when I got a chance to every day or once a week as circumstances varied. Your photojournalistic approach to photography, eye for detail, and good soul/sense of humor helped to keep me inspired throughout the term that I studied and acquired my Bachelor of Arts in Photography at Columbia College Chicago. In addition to that, you've given me insight into Toronto that has given me the impetus to try and visit, and even an affinity for the city that has me considering moving there. I greatly appreciate the positive influence both you and DDOI have had on my life, and have referenced the site often to those who enjoy photography or have studied it in college. Thank you for the wonderful memories...it will be sad to see the daily images go. However, I sincerely hope you'll maintain the archive, and will always look forward to new content that you create. Here's to another 10 years of images, Sam...if there was a way, I'd plan a celebration, but I hope you'll appreciate my sincere thanks instead.

Thanks again, and best wishes from another photographer,
-Brendan

Wow, just read the announcement. I will miss my daily dose, been following you for over 6 years now. Thanks for everything, and most definitely looking forward to your future projects Mr. Javanrouh.

Sorry to hear about the end of ddoi. I've been a subscriber for a few years now and looked forward to each day's image.

Good luck with your next stage... and thanks!

Hi Sam - Like you, I am an immigrant to Toronto and have come to love the city as much as you do. You have introduced so many iconic images of Toronto to the world, and no doubt increased the number of visitors to the city.

I'll look forward to the next 364 images, and wish you all the best for whatever the future holds for you. Hopefully you'll take us along for the ride again.

Great Run .... thank you for consistently providing impeccably well executed - passionate imagery. Much luck to you and hope this year is a remarkable one.

That is sad news Sam. Love visiting your site and have been following you for a long time now - at least 5 years if not more. You were the inspiration behind my own photoblog as well.

But a fresh start is always good... Cheers and good luck with the new direction!

Congratulations! I look everyday on this website about 3 years. I am looking forward to each new picture. But i didn't know You post photos here for 9 years. It's great!

Posted by Lenka Puzmanova at July 7, 2012 04:32 PM

Noooo....I don't remember how I was introduced to your daily photos, years, for sure...but I can tell you your post is one of the first e-mails I open every day, day after day. It is not just fine photography, but the sensitivity, compassion and insight you display for each and every subject. Every single one. What can I say: I just retired after 39 years of teaching, and I certainly know the feeling of "OK, enough is enough". Tomorrow is just another day - I am grateful for each one, and I sure you are too. Make the most of each. All the best.

Attempted to comment Wednesday but got a little choked up! I have love love loved your pictures for many years (after an uncle from the Yukon sent me the link to your site). You've kept me in love with my city even when it pisses me right off. Best of luck Sam in the year to come and beyond.

I've been a follower since 2005. Thank you for sharing your life with us through your photos. I will certainly miss this blog!

I've been a big fan of your work since the beginning. I think since 2004. Since I moved from my hometown of Toronto to Barcelona in 2009 your pictures of our city have been a big factor in alleviating my home-sickness. You pictures have inspired my husband and i to pursue photography as a more serious hobby and your art has been a part of our daily routine. For that I thank you. Eldar & Kiana

Posted by Kiana at July 9, 2012 04:35 PM

Well this is news! Your pictures have taken my breath away and inspired me to watch for beauty and structure everywhere. Thank you. I completely understand your decision and wish you the very best. We still have a year!

Many thanks for some great images - I just don't know how you managed to find one a day for all that time! I have noticed a change in the style of some of the images recently, some real beauties - I look forward to the next year and to your new site - you deserve a rest and perhaps a more leisurely posting regime! Best wishes and don't forget to tell us your new site when the time is right...

I'm sad to hear that, because i'm a daily visitor.
your photos are a big inspiration for me.

I hope to see your great photos more and more, thanks for all your inspirations and I'm sure it's not going to end after this page, I have a feeling it will be more :)

10 years – wow. I wasn't there from the beginning on, but I was surprised myself to discover that it has already been 8 years now for me, as a fan of ddoi ...
The daily trips to this website will be missed! But I am sure to follow you with visits to your new destination next year.
Always inspiring and always my visual connection across the ocean to a city whom I love. Thank you very much.

Only now catching up to this post in my feed reader. Just also wanted to say thanks for your images. They've been an inspiration, and I look forward to the final year of ddoi, as well as what your fresh start will bring.

Posted by Mark Z at July 16, 2012 03:54 PM

My suggestion is to take on guest artists to contribute a week or month each of ddoi.

Posted by Wayne at July 17, 2012 03:47 PM

You were my original inspiration for getting in to photography, and I too have passed on the bug to many so your DNA has gone out into the ether across the ocean.
I have continued to dip in to this site over these 9 years and you continue to show how we always can learn new things and see the world afresh every day, well, most of them anyway ;)

Thanks again, you've earned a break!!!

Posted by piersy at July 18, 2012 08:05 AM

Always loved your work. What vision - a one year warning. I wish I could have this much foresight.

Will be counting down sadly with you. But a thank you for all those images up to now.

Posted by Warren at July 22, 2012 02:25 AM

With over how many photos? 3,650+ photos in 10 years? That's certainly a strong level of commitment. :) Congratulations and best of luck!

Hi, Sam,

I've been following your site since 2003 and cannot express in a few words how much pleasure and joy your work has given me. My father was a local photographer (my brother has followed in his footsteps)who had his own darkroom, developed his own prints and loved to try new ways of making the "perfect" image. He taught us to appreciate the photographic art and your site has provided me a daily reason to continue that appreciation.

Posted by Brenda Germany at July 24, 2012 01:45 PM

I think I started following you close to the beginning. Your blog stood out for me and your many Toronto shots (especially at the Islands) have affected me deeply on many occasions. I have told many friends and acquaintances about your blog and directed them to it. Everyone I told found it enjoyable and remarkable. Thank you so much for all these photos. There is one that has adorned my laptop's wallpaper for years now (a lightening bolt seen from the main bridge at the Island). I feel that you are not just a blogger, but a friend who really "gets" my city. I do hope you will continue even if sporadically as I cannot imagine not being able to see where you've been!
Thanks again,
Sheila Gregory

Have been doing some catch up. Your daily dose was my cure for homesickness (and rotating wallpaper) when I lived abroad for the last 4.5 years and now glad to say that I'm back. I'l be sad to see your blog come to an end but hope that you will leave it up to inspire and allow us to revisit from time to time a great portfolio and body of work that you've built up over the last 9+years. Thanks for the great job!

Sam --
So strange to see this, you must have heard me tell my friend, "It must be nearly 10 years! He said it was only going to last 10 years." Congratulations on a wonderful achievement! So many fun & interesting photos! I know you have grweatly influenced the way I see the urban landscape & the pictures I take of it. Best of luck in your new site --wWe look forward to it.

ps Wow! Your little girl is getting big!
