I like the colour version of this one more.

B&W

I don't know Toronto. Is Dundas and McCaul a decrepit, hopeless slum? Then, black and white. Is it a vibrant neighborhood, only old? Then color.

I love the smell of provocation in the morning!

Posted by Tom at February 22, 2012 02:10 AM

Black&White is much better! I like the little black triangles created by the crossing of the rails.

Posted by winterwold at February 22, 2012 02:11 AM

I'm definitely partial to the black and white. Nice shot.

Black and white, no question. Love the shadow textures on the concrete playing with the lines of the tracks.

black and white! would be so 1957 if it weren't for the "espresso bar"..

Posted by nikolaus at February 22, 2012 03:40 AM

As presented, I'd have to say B&W as it's much more dramatic. However, if you bumped the black level up on the colour version, it would be a lot closer.

I prefer the black and white because of the mood feeling. Although the building on the right looks as if it has NO window glass.

Black and White. The photo is really amazing but black and white adds a little extra touch.

I got some interesting photos. come to my good friend.

Black and white. Hands down the better version for me

Posted by Dave at February 22, 2012 08:16 AM

Sam,
I'm usually partial to a color version when both are offered, but in this case the B&W emphaszes all of the LINES in the photo, especially bringing out the overhead wires (which are not as dramatic against the blue sky).

Posted by John Robinson at February 22, 2012 08:19 AM

Each has it's own appeal. But I would have to say the color. The B&W has a desolate feel to it.

B&W ... wonderful contrast

Posted by Quinze at February 22, 2012 09:00 AM

Is say B&W, it's much more moody, edgy, all the straight lines stand out more. Having spent 4+ years just down the street from there the top image made me do a double take to figure our where it was, while the bottom colour image I recognized instantly. That's my 2 cents. Love the blog as always, cheers

Definitely the B&W.

Posted by navin harish at February 22, 2012 10:11 AM

What a question! I ask myself often without definitive answers. When I put a black and white film in my Nikon Fe, I had already chosen and I did not ask more question. But for your picture, I would say both.

B/W ... hands down!

black and white, the contrast is unbeatable

Posted by Greg Lundgren at February 22, 2012 01:40 PM

Black and White. Definitively.

Posted by Stefan at February 22, 2012 02:15 PM

Black and white, for sure.

The image is about long shadows, streetcar tracks and power lines. B&W highlights that story by removing the sky and deemphasizing storefronts.

Posted by Paul at February 22, 2012 03:03 PM

Definitely colour. The sky is too dark for enough contrast between sky and buildings. Cheers, Hans

BW !

Posted by FLomar at February 22, 2012 05:05 PM

In this example, the black and white conveys more of a mood, which it usually does. I vote B&W.

Noticed the lack of comments lately. Please rest assured that many of us still check out your photos daily, have been doing so for years and even if we don't say anything, appreciate every shot, Sam.

Posted by Rodabell at February 22, 2012 05:36 PM

Definitely black and white- much more impressive. Though it does kinda turn that huge shadow into a bit more of a problem...

Posted by Amy at February 22, 2012 05:44 PM

BW - just because the tones are so rich. Colour is interesting but BW really makes those shadows pop and let you focus on the shapes rather than the content.

Posted by Bill at February 22, 2012 06:55 PM

Black & white. It's moody, retro, way cooler.

Posted by Scott Murdoch at February 22, 2012 08:15 PM

The B&W looks almost like ortho film and it makes for a very arty shot. The color does provide a more realistic view and detail. Sometimes there's no choice or no way to choose. Love those shadows and tracks in the foreground.

B&W. It's fascinating how B&W can make something so much more interesting to look at. The color distracted me but I loved running my eyes around all of those black lines contrasting with the white. Both are great, but my bias is always with whatever makes my eyes run all over a picture.
