it's a shame that in times of a new ecological way of thinking, a town like toronto is *reducing* it's bike-capabilities. very sad, I wouldn't take it, I would drive even more with my bike, pay every fine 'the man' has available until there'll be two bike-lanes!
great foto (last one), though :)

it will be relocated to Sherbourne...
CBC website:
Toronto city council voted on Wednesday to remove some downtown bicycle lanes. They passed a motion to remove bike lanes on Jarvis Street and install a separated bike lane on the adjacent Sherbourne Street.

Cyclists have no place on roads with 2000lb+ motor vehicles.

@Alex: Not when they go removing bike lanes!

So they are just moving the bike lane? That doesn't seem like a problem to me; although I wish the number of bike lanes was increasing instead of staying the same.

They claim that the bike lanes add a mere 2 minutes drive time to Jarvis. But of course it can't be "drive" time since the road is the same length. It's actually 2 minutes idling/crawling time, which causes vehicles to emit the worst kinds of pollution. Let's see, 2 minutes x 28,000 cars daily = 56,000 additional minutes of vehicle idling every single day of the week. That's 933 HOURS! of extra idling daily.

Not only should these lanes be removed, but cycling on Jarvis should be banned outright. Let the cars have at least one major north south artery from downtown.

The photo is a good reminder that we sometimes make the mistake of electing a moron for Mayor in this city. This one bike lane route will go down in history as one of Mayor Miller's many major mistakes. Thank GOD he's gone.

@dave...
Maybe if some of those drivers got out of their cars and onto bikes, it would reduce idle time. Single occupant autos and SUVs should be banned from Jarvis. And the rest of Downtown for that matter.

It's not cyclists causing those emissions.

Carpool. Transit. Cycle.

LOL... Let's talk about it in January (or any time from December through to April) when the city is using those bike lanes to store the snow from the road. :) Last I checked this is Canada, not the Mediterranean.

Not everyone can ride a bike, or live downtown. I cycle, ride the TTC and own a vehicle. I use all these modes because you can't just use one. Remember our current society was built around the car. Perhaps you crazy cyclist may not be here because of one?! Stop being so narrow minded and let's start working together. Cars will always be around, we just hope that they'll be electric sooner than later.

"Cyclists have no place on roads with 2000lb+ motor vehicles."

It is not problem with Cars it is problem with whole EDUCATION of the cyclists the lack of it. Throwing responsibility to drivers since we are bigger and stronger now I am responsible for the asshole squeezing with his/hers cycle in between cars.Or going straight line and then suddenly making 90 degree turn, using pedestrian crosswalk without dismounting,zig-zag through traffic using a cellphone or worse using headphones and doing the same.Running Stop sing Red light...Laws do not apply to you???I wish if SOMEONE in this city will make you wild bunch declare you a VEHICLE and MAKE you pay TAXES for the road you are using and MAKE you obligated by law to wear a license plate...Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen you will have drivers respect on the road and then you will be provided with a BIKE lanes that you deserve.Same goes with people on the roller-blades that risk their life tossing their limbs left and right and taking more than 1.5 meter of the space...Problem did not started with cars it started with cyclist.I am cyclist but I am using my bike on the BIKE PATH ONLY and I have no desire to venture into the traffic.As the someone up there said 2000+ car is more likely to win that battle.One more thing.My cousin was hit by a kawasaki ninja while crossing the street.Hi is in a coma for the past year did not awake :(.
