I follow your daily blog using my Yahoo site. I just wanted to say that I admire this photo composition-ally, technically AND tonally. Well done!! :-) <3
Posted by Bree at May 15, 2011 04:40 AMToday's shot (King Clock) is reminded me of an obsession of mine. The tradition in clock faces with Roman numeral numbering is that the "four" spot be "IIII", rather than the correct "IV".
The reason was to make the clock face seem more symmetrical with all the ink in the "IIII" helping to balance all the ink in the "VIII" and the other big numbers. This is lack of symmetry is quite vivid in this shot - the left side feeling much heavier.
I wonder how it came to be that the builders of this clock did not get connected with this tradition? Usually, I see the mistake modern day "cheap" watches at the big box stores.
Posted by Jim Loats at May 15, 2011 10:31 AMAfter all these years of walking by, to and from the St. Lawrence Market, it is wonderful to be able to see the details of the tower on St. Lawrence Hall up so close. Just one of my favourite buildings in that whole historic area.
A fantastic shot. Thank you Sam.
Wow...so much sadness in this photo....don't you think?
Thanks!
Michel
I've been told that this building is the original City Hall. I'm not sure if this is true or not.
Posted by Bob Eccles at May 16, 2011 02:18 PMHave always loved that lightwell with the arched roof on the King Eddy - including the St Lawrence Hall tower which was built on the site of the first city hall of Toronto which was, sadly, destroyed by fire
