Comments: city on ice

WOW man. thats really beautiful. at first (before i read the caption) i was thinking "SHIT! is that time lapse? its moving so nice and fluid"

Posted by //d. at December 23, 2009 12:15 AM

i like the darker better. more contrast, more steel-y, just feels more cold to look at it...

Posted by a at December 23, 2009 12:24 AM

i like the video's tone best. more surreal than ultra-real like the photo.

Posted by Jen at December 23, 2009 12:25 AM

Great picture!

I prefer the photo.
It looks colder, what fits perfectly the sujet.

Posted by Pietro at December 23, 2009 12:38 AM

At first, when I saw the video thumbnail, I thought, "The photo looks much better..." But after watching the video, I have a more non-commital answer: the photo's tone is good for the photo, the video's tone is good for the video.

Posted by chris at December 23, 2009 12:59 AM

very cool Sam!

I think I like the warmer colours (video) better, makes it seem like ou're taking the ferry as the sun is starting to get low.

Posted by marc at December 23, 2009 01:30 AM

i like it better in the muted colors of the picture! it looks colder to me like that. however, the video is amazing regardless.

Posted by Jessie at December 23, 2009 01:30 AM

I think they're both fantastic and that the processing of both fit for still and video, respectively!

Posted by Annie at December 23, 2009 01:47 AM

I prefer the photo's ice, but I like the video's sky.

Posted by Pavan Chander at December 23, 2009 01:52 AM

I like the tone of the photo because it looks COLDER - fitting for the subject.

Posted by BJ at December 23, 2009 01:56 AM

I think the photo looks better (the darkish blue sky gives you the feeling of a very cold evening).

Posted by Stefan Pascal at December 23, 2009 02:51 AM

The first one is definitively the better one. The sky is really expressive and the clouds don't seems yellow.

Posted by Xavier at December 23, 2009 03:24 AM

Both are rather lovely.

The yellow cast on the video would be distracting on the still shot, but works fine with moving footage. Don't change a thing!

Posted by Richard at December 23, 2009 03:42 AM

I love your photos and the video is simply stunning!:)

I prefer the tones of the sky in the video but the picture is awesome as well!

Posted by Pestekkorna at December 23, 2009 04:10 AM

a bit like 'the day after tomorrow'~

Posted by nomis at December 23, 2009 04:24 AM

WE NEED A WALLPAPER VERSION OF THIS PIC. BRILLIANT SHOT. LOVED THE VIDEO>

Posted by shikher at December 23, 2009 04:26 AM

I prefer the photos color correction. It is more stark and wintery. It gives it that colder feeling.

Posted by David Bridle at December 23, 2009 04:26 AM

Pretty cool stuff. I liked the video tone better.
The colors seem more alive and interesting.

Posted by Karri at December 23, 2009 04:29 AM

wow.. everything is so still... beautiful!

Posted by shane at December 23, 2009 07:03 AM

Simply amazing!!! I check your blog everyday and I love all your photos, but this one really is amazing!

Posted by Janire Quintairos at December 23, 2009 07:10 AM

Wow, very tough to say wich color correction I like better, I'm leaning more toward the blue one. Either way, both of these are stunning! What did you mount your camera on for the video?

Posted by Tony Beninate at December 23, 2009 07:14 AM

Wow! hard to say which color correction I like better, I'm leaning more toward the blue one. Either way, both of these are stunning! What did you mount your camera on for the video?

Posted by Tony Beninate at December 23, 2009 07:15 AM

I prefer the muted, darker sky version of the image. The contrast pops more, and although the whole picture looks colder, the city has a warmth that the video doesn't show. Blame it on the greener cast of the video.

Sorry if I'm voting for the older one! I'm still all about growth! :P

Happy holidays!

Posted by Emmanuel at December 23, 2009 07:25 AM

I personally like the photo tone - the shadows in the sky and ice works for me.

Posted by Clarence Johnson at December 23, 2009 07:41 AM

Nice photo and video. I prefer the video colours better!

Posted by Kianoosh at December 23, 2009 07:57 AM

great image and nice movie!
I thought we were having a cold spell in Ireland . . . gret clear weather this time of year for icy scapes. well done

Posted by Aoluain at December 23, 2009 08:46 AM

Wow that video is great. I like colors of the sky more than in the photograph to be honest.

Did you really film it from the ferry? It seems really smooth...

Posted by Benjamin M. at December 23, 2009 08:51 AM

The colours of the image are far more dramatic and artificial and personally I like them more tham the natural colours of the video. The colours of the video shouldn't be like the image colours as well as the less sharpness, which I think suits the video well in it's natural experience of the trip. The music underneath is cool!

Posted by chrisjan at December 23, 2009 08:56 AM

I really like the color in the video the best. Nice work!

Posted by Denny Deaton at December 23, 2009 09:02 AM

Interesting difference in color! Personally, I'd prefer the photo's processing; a little less saturation really works for me on a scene like that.

Posted by Ed Marshall at December 23, 2009 09:02 AM

I think the photo does... it gives it a more dreary sort of feel (which is the sort of feeling I associate with winter and cold). The video is nice though but it seems more cheery.

Posted by Bunnny at December 23, 2009 09:06 AM

Awesome capture Sam. The fragmented ice in the foreground makes the shot work for me. I prefer the tone of the still. I think the vid. would be more dramatic with it.

Posted by Randy at December 23, 2009 09:14 AM

Quite preferred the tone in the video. Although as a still the colour correction used, I think, sets the mood quite well.

Posted by Rashmi at December 23, 2009 09:39 AM

I like the tone and colour correction in the video, but can't really articulate why I do...

Posted by Lefty Rodriguez at December 23, 2009 09:40 AM

Very cool video... it's totally personal preference but I like the yellow tone in the video better than the photo, it seems to add a bit of desired warmth (I get cold just looking at that water)

Posted by Lon at December 23, 2009 09:52 AM

The Photo really has a good cold feel to it. The video is also very good, somewhat eerie.

Posted by Raj at December 23, 2009 09:54 AM

Nice one Sam. In terms of colour corrections prefs, I love the top one. It screams our "daily dose of imagery" to me. The bottom one however looks closer to reality and what you might have actually been seeing through the viewfinder. My two cents ;)

Posted by Daniel Seguin at December 23, 2009 10:22 AM

Nice video! Video is a lot more warmer than the photo above it. i think the photo works better given the setting but the video is also compelling. How did you stabilize the camera?

Posted by Kevin at December 23, 2009 10:33 AM

I like the tone of the first one better, but not once I see the video.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos all year. All the best to you for the holidays and for the new year.

Wow so much ice. :)

Posted by Catarina at December 23, 2009 10:52 AM

Great video and great photo!

Posted by Taimoor at December 23, 2009 10:58 AM

sweeet!

Posted by faisal at December 23, 2009 11:03 AM

The colors are so different it almost seems hard to believe they were shot at the same time. In the still shot it doesn't look like there is any sun at all, but in the video it does. After watching the video I prefer that, it looks just like that weak sunlight of winter.

Posted by Joyce at December 23, 2009 11:20 AM

I really like the video, and im a bit partial to warmer tones, but i think the picture might have a more appropriate tone for the season

Posted by boo at December 23, 2009 12:36 PM

I love the sky in the video, but the buildings look so cold and majestic in the picture. Sooo nice ;D

Posted by Diane at December 23, 2009 12:38 PM

The top one feels colder and more like ice. It'a my preference. However, both are very very cool! :-)

Posted by Martin Brown at December 23, 2009 01:17 PM

Wow, incredible video! Thanks!

Posted by Carl at December 23, 2009 04:28 PM

I like the photo better. Gives it a darker, colder tone.

The video is great, though. :)

Keep up the wonderful work Sam!

Posted by Kyra at December 23, 2009 06:52 PM

VIDEO - STUNNING! Photo and video are different media, so appropriate they look different. The sound on vid, very dramatic.

Sam, you've been my daily inspiration with your photography! Thank You! And Seasons Greetings!

Posted by Daria Stermac at December 23, 2009 07:10 PM

Photo is colder :)

Posted by pc at December 23, 2009 09:28 PM

I think the higher contrast of the still shot is closer to reality but the softer contrast of the video also looks natural in its own right. These were taken at the same time? What difference would processing now instead of then make? I'm not familiar with the 'processes' and would find it good to know.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at December 23, 2009 09:54 PM

the photo colors really accentuate the coldness-- the warmer blues in the video (and the cheesy effect at the beginning next to the boat-induced pan across the ice, and the power point text effect at the end) make it look like some terrible insurance company commercial or something...

it **really** looks like it's trying to sell me something by denying the obvious coldness...

Posted by liz at December 24, 2009 01:20 AM

Great pov, the viseo is outstanding! Merry Christmas!

Posted by BoB at December 24, 2009 08:19 AM

WOW! that is a phenom video! also great music with it. sort of a day after tomorrow/road feel to it but very effective. do more please!

Posted by catied at December 24, 2009 08:31 AM

That was my way to work every day for many years when I was a Parks employee. What you do not get from this video is the terrific noise you hear as the ice scrapes along the hull of the Ongiara as it moves. The colder it gets, the thicker the ice, the slower you go and the louder the noise.

Posted by Natasha at December 24, 2009 04:14 PM

great video Sam, impressive work as always!!

Posted by Al Doan at December 24, 2009 06:36 PM

The tones in the picture is definitely best! Really cool video though.

Posted by Sverre B at December 25, 2009 09:06 AM

Great, awesome Sam...

Posted by MEW at December 26, 2009 06:04 PM

I much prefer the photo. It looks much crisper, colder. The other one looks a bit dirtier, like the ice is dirty with something (I think that's ust some noticeably warm hues in the colour)

Posted by Tessa at December 26, 2009 08:34 PM

the video looks almost as if animated ... whereas the picture is so crisp & cold ... i wont say which is a better color correction but ... both look amazing!

Posted by Zeeshan at December 27, 2009 07:13 AM

i think i've commented before that i like your new more colorful style of processing.

Posted by jesse at December 28, 2009 12:18 AM

I like the blue

Posted by vladimir at December 28, 2009 12:35 PM

I prefer the colour correction in the video.

Posted by Margaret at December 28, 2009 02:15 PM

I like the top photo better. The colours are icier

Posted by Barbara M at December 28, 2009 05:31 PM

Sam, you should think about making a movie! I guarantee your success.

Posted by Amir at December 29, 2009 05:35 AM

I have a tendency to correct with a blue cast to get clarity in my photos, then to add warmth I add a bit of sepia. Two folks have said the vimeo has a creepy Day After feel. That's because there has been actual manipulation of our light on earth with an ugly "the-sun-is-dying" yellow cast. The music adds to that and you end up telling His Story, not ours. You can tell His Story for archival purposes but be sure you know the difference and are making your own choice. There are dozens of layers of frequency in an image. Take out the bad and you have something amazing, something not seen before by people.

Posted by DA at December 29, 2009 06:42 PM

I like the dark gray blue better than the green/blue - it gives it more of a "city on ice" feel than a "oh - well, that's an interesting shot of a city on the lake."

Posted by Christine at December 30, 2009 04:46 PM

Wow, both are stunning!
I can't say which I like better. There is something lovely about both versions. I do like the music you used with the video though, it adds a different dimension to the images.

Posted by Ramune at January 5, 2010 08:50 PM

WOW I love them both! I liked the video as is but would think it would be pretty awesome to see it with a similar tone as the picture.

I really liked the video though, like a lot of your winter shots of this lake, it had a very half-life like feel to it! Especially with that background noise!

Posted by Sean Cutt at January 9, 2010 07:48 PM

LOVE, love, love that video. Wish it was much longer. So calming. I quite like the colour tone of the video and prefer it to the still.
