"I find photos of fans can often be more interesting than the celebrities themselves..." - nicely put and how true!

Without a special access permit photographing the celebrities is a hopeless task, as well shown by your fan photos. And it is the fans who make the celebrities what they are - so maybe they are more interesting in the overall picture. One might wonder at times why they have made someone in particular a somebody. Like Billy Bob Thornton. I laugh a bit looking at all the cameras being waved about trying to catch an image worth looking at. And digital has put many more out there doing it. In some ways it's become to easy to think you can do this.

Is that photographer with the SLR and flash wearing any pants? And is that guy behind him stealing stuff from his camera bag?

Looks like the guy with the black and white t-shirt is grabbing the bag on the back of the tall guy photographing. You might have caught a pick pocketer on camera :-)
