Comments: lightning city

Hello,
I have been following your blog for a while enjoying your wonderful images. But these are really cool. I was wondering if you'd mind if I link to them from my blog?

Best,
Melli

An amazing shot! Beautiful! I have never tried capturing lightning storms but after reading your explanation I will maybe try it one day. Thanks for sharing!

Applause!!!

Posted by Jain at August 10, 2009 04:36 AM

I am sooo jealous, we never get storms like this over here in England! The shots are wonderful, though I have to ask how you set your camera up to do the interval captures, was it connected to a computer or do you have a gadget to do that?

Spectacular shots, but mostly well composed, something unusual in photos of lightning.
Greetings

Posted by Raul at August 10, 2009 04:46 AM

WOW! Absolutely fantastic! I just can't stop scrolling the flash image back and forth.

Posted by Laszlo at August 10, 2009 04:51 AM

Awesome! please let us know how you put all the images together on ps.

Posted by dale at August 10, 2009 05:21 AM

Awesome snaps...

Posted by Ravi at August 10, 2009 05:26 AM

Fabulous . . . Where are those shots taken from? The CN Tower is still standing, imagine the voltage that went through that needle . . .

Posted by bjk at August 10, 2009 05:29 AM

Great photos Sam. That storm was intense! I wish I had a vantage point like yours. I live on the first floor in a house which is surrounded by maple trees. There's nowhere to take a photo from...

Posted by Andrew at August 10, 2009 05:34 AM

really great shots. all of them. thank you.

Posted by Payam at August 10, 2009 05:52 AM

Fantastic Sam, I had a feeling you were going to catch some great ones and you did. Love the mouseover image switching.

Posted by Richard at August 10, 2009 06:57 AM

Wow!

Posted by Fairy at August 10, 2009 07:01 AM

That is really fantastic. I would like to capture some lightning shots like that some day. Guess I need to work on being in the right place at the right time.

Posted by db at August 10, 2009 07:36 AM

Great captures Sam! Made me think of that great lightning photo some years ago which you made -> http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/06/08/03/

Posted by Marc at August 10, 2009 07:36 AM

Amazing photos and amazing storm, here in Alicante (Spain) doesn't have this kind of storms, just a lot of sunny days.

Amazing shots!

Posted by Mike G. at August 10, 2009 08:29 AM

really cool picture.

Posted by busse at August 10, 2009 08:29 AM

Sorry for the double post, but I really like how the road seems to continue "through" the building.

Posted by Mike G at August 10, 2009 08:37 AM

Wow, amazing shots! I like the embedded flash thing you did there. Really cool. Makes me wish I had a top floor condo :)

Posted by Adam at August 10, 2009 08:46 AM

Nicely done. I love the interactive Flash image!

Posted by Clarence Johnson at August 10, 2009 08:48 AM

Very cool....both the light show last night and your pics!!

Posted by Kirsten at August 10, 2009 09:03 AM

Great pictures, as always Sam!
I was on the greyhound to Peterborough from Toronto last night--what a terrifying ride!

It looks like the CN tower is a magnet for lighting strikes (and understandably so)!

I wonder how it must've looked like to the people inside the tower...

Posted by furqan at August 10, 2009 09:03 AM

Yes folks, there you have it - actual proof that every town needs to be protected by one of our giant lightning rods!

Posted by Brian at August 10, 2009 10:36 AM

Ah, great shots! I myself have been trying to get shots of the lightning yesterday but I failed! XD

Posted by chels at August 10, 2009 10:41 AM

You got a long WOOOW! out of me with this one :)
Spectacular display of light and colors.. The result is mind blowing!

Posted by Ilan at August 10, 2009 10:50 AM

Very nice pictures Sam, I love the quality and as said before, the way you posted the multiple images. Nice job.

Posted by Carlos Bohorquez Nassar at August 10, 2009 11:00 AM

Now this is a proper storm. They predicted something exactly like this for Ottawa, but we just got fog and now haziness. They expect more storms throughout this week - but as for today it's just a hazy sunny day, no rain! Very humid though.

Very nice shot. At fifteen seconds you must've had to do some darkening because city lights would expose a lot to that!

Posted by Justin at August 10, 2009 11:24 AM

Applause is right! Impressive. Must learn how to program the camera to take pictures at intervals.

Posted by Roberta at August 10, 2009 12:00 PM

You are amazing Sam!
I was telling Ellie last night: I can't wait to check ddoi tomorrow for Sam's lightning shots! I knew you'd do something awesome again; and you didn't disappoint me one bit!
Thanks again

Posted by Babak at August 10, 2009 12:25 PM

Brilliant is the word. I'm a fan.

The CN Tower is repeatedly hit by lightening!

"If you're looking for a spectacular lightning show, there's no better seat than finding a safe spot near the CN Tower during a thunderstorm. The tallest freestanding structure in the world is struck by lightning more frequently than any other structure in Toronto, finds a study by university researchers... at least 40 to 50 times annually."

Ugh. Don't cheat by combining photos in Photoshop. Real photos only.

Posted by Paul at August 10, 2009 01:19 PM

pretty epic shots, i have been trying all summer to catch some shots of the knarly storms we have been having in utah... but unfortunately i don't have a set-up that facilitates this kind of shot. Nice work, i check out your page everyday for a little inspiration!

Posted by Brad Marshall at August 10, 2009 01:25 PM

Another great job Sam.
Bravo

Posted by Jens at August 10, 2009 02:45 PM

Wow! Sam: you're good!
I especially like the 'interactive' image. Amazing!
Thanks for your daily photos, and for making Toronto your home.

Posted by Jim at August 10, 2009 02:58 PM

Really great photo! Love the flash images. If you move your mouse to the second image from the right, there appears to be a funnel cloud just to the right of the lightning hitting the tower.

Posted by Khristopher at August 10, 2009 03:01 PM

Fantastic. Beautiful.
I have to say, I found the number of lights left on in those big (and most likely empty) office buildings on a Sunday mind boggling.
Great shots. I check your site out daily.

Posted by Kim at August 10, 2009 04:00 PM

Breathtaking shots!
Absolutely brilliant work.

Posted by Miguel at August 10, 2009 04:58 PM

Posted by Meaghan at August 10, 2009 07:17 PM

hey! just saw you on Global talking about the lightning. nice to put a voice to the face! good lightning storms are something i miss viewing out here on the west coast. with the way the forests are out here though, it's probably for the best.

Posted by myles at August 10, 2009 08:53 PM

Gorgeous lightning photos! I have a bit of an obsession with capturing lightning on film, but certainly don't have as nice a camera as you seem to have! What do you use?
Also, trying to figure out which direction you're facing from those shots! Absolutely amazing pictures :)

Posted by Michele at August 10, 2009 10:48 PM

Those are amazing shots! I love your shots of Toronto as I am from Brampton. The storm was crazy intense! Beauty use of Flash as well.

Posted by Kevin Williams at August 12, 2009 12:35 AM

It's amazing that how many of them catched the tower...beautiful examples of the power of weather.

Posted by Gabor Varga at August 12, 2009 06:52 AM

Hugely impressive.
I am very often impressed by lightning photos, but I must say that these are some of the best I've seen in a while.
Absolutely spectacular.

We've had one hour long lightning "storm" here so far...would have loved to have been in Toronto for this. Great view - outstanding sharpness. What a cool little feature to mouse over and see multiple shots, too!

Posted by Marvin at August 12, 2009 03:20 PM

I was on the top floor of the Delta Chelsea during this storm and only wish I had gotten shots a fraction of the quality of yours. Truly beautiful.

Posted by Mark at August 12, 2009 03:49 PM
