I'd wish you'd use the EL17-40L more often! I really preferred the results from that lens over the Sigma, even though it's not as wide

I love the bottom one! Nice work

کارتان در سوژه یابی و عکسبرداری فوق العاده است.

Wow, that is madness... and I imagine a colour version of these shots would look just far too disgusting if you know what I mean.

A scary scene; Toronto buried underneath a mountain of garbage, the low sky ads perfectly to the doomsday feeling.

Posted by Barbro at July 7, 2009 05:33 AM

These are amazing shots. Are they HDR?

Amazing shot and such a brutal situation. Vancouver has been through this as well, in the hot summer and it's never a good situation.
However, you even have the ability to make garbage look like art. Kudos to you!

I was holding my breath too but when I looking at these pictures :-). great shot Sam! Should send them to TorontoStar.

it's amazing... you somehow made photos of garbage look stellar.

keep up the fabulous work. =) and hopefully this garbage strike ends soon so that you can get back to taking beautiful photos of our city.

I've never seen garbage look so dramatic before! Very brave of you to venture into the stench to capture these images.

Posted by Ed_K at July 7, 2009 09:41 AM

It doesn't look so bad in BW... leave it to Sam to turn a mess into a majestic landscape!

... glad I don't live nearby one of these impromptu pits...

... I've also wondered if this helps people to realize how much they waste and if it'll make a difference in future lifestyle...

What's the best way to utilize this picture to maximum effect?? Media?? Flooding city lines--email, fax machines--with these images? I'm thinking of Margaret Mead's fab quote about never doubting how a thoughtful, committed individual can change the world... Thanks for sharing your visions with us.

I don't think we will drown in water because of global warming, I think we will drown in our own garbage long before that..

I stumbled on to these photos and must admit, I was a bit moved. I've been driving by these mounds since the strike started and never would have guessed that such powerful imagery could have become of them. Black and white works great.

Posted by Insanewiches at July 7, 2009 01:09 PM

At first sight I thought it was art.

Posted by maarten at July 7, 2009 01:10 PM

i salute you for doing these photos!
somehow they look macabre.
love the work!
regards from hot europe.

looks like its a peg on the nose shot

Posted by D at July 7, 2009 03:49 PM

Only you can make garbage look artistic.
The bags almost look like bodies. It's kinda disturbing. haha
The Black and White give the illusion that the trees in the background are just more mountain heaps of garbage.

Can't wait til the strike is over.
But then again, the workers deserve their due.

Nice photos! The sacrifices of a good photographer. Must've been gross.

Love your sense of humor = 'If for any reason you what to see a higher resolution .....'

Did anyone you met later in the day ask where you'd been on the basis of your odor? Yuk!

I never thougt that garbage could be so beautiful!

I love how someone packed their garbage into a suitcase.

Posted by Andrew at July 10, 2009 04:15 AM

YIKES! Is it me or do these strikes happen a lot there? Wow that is an amazing sight...but what a smell you must have endured to get the shots which by the way are awesome even though the subject matter is not a pleasant one. You turned this mass of garbage into art with some powerful compositions.

Looks like a horror movie where all humans have died...
