Comments: king biking

Oh I don't know, some people would say riding without using the handlebars is about as dangerous as it looks :P

Posted by Jeremy D Pavleck at June 3, 2009 01:09 AM

Nice video Sam! Is that blood on the groud at 4:04?

Posted by Ian at June 3, 2009 01:18 AM

great plot ;)

Posted by tom at June 3, 2009 01:54 AM

That really looks dangerous, Sam. I see some vignetting, too; what was the aperture value ?

Posted by John A. at June 3, 2009 02:05 AM

Hey... scary video... I was just waiting for the crash scene :-)

Btw... you need to oil your bike chain :-)

Oh my god that was awesome! please do more of these in the future as they are great.

Posted by Josh Barry at June 3, 2009 02:23 AM

Cool! Et balèze en plus!
Ce 5D2 est vraiment exellent aussi.
Merci de partager tes experiences photographiques et vidéos.
Un blog d'une grande qualité.

This is insane, very nice video I must say, but insane.I ride around town with my bike too, maybe I should try it sometimes? LOL

Posted by Zoe at June 3, 2009 03:03 AM

oh my god! that's so cool... but i was a little afraid that you were going to have an accident

Posted by marta at June 3, 2009 03:58 AM

Going into a new medium are we Sam? Looks to me like a chase sequence from one of the Bourne films or something like that with all the shaky cam. Strangely I prefer the video to the photo. Maybe it's just because we've seen those handlebars before though!

Posted by Anton at June 3, 2009 04:22 AM

awesome video and image, as always! Keep up the good work, and don't do *too* many crazy things

Posted by Paul Johnston at June 3, 2009 04:27 AM

Sam, it's not what will happen to YOU if you fall, just hate to see the 5D smashed!! :)

Posted by Edwin at June 3, 2009 04:43 AM

Bravo Sam.
You should try the Tour of France is less risky.
Best regards

Posted by António P. at June 3, 2009 05:00 AM

I am taking this moment to scold you for riding so close to the curb one(no) handed while operating a camera! I hope you were wearing a helmet at least?

Beside that, I don't think James Cameron could make a bike ride look more perilous! Good job!

Posted by Mark at June 3, 2009 05:51 AM

Fantastic Sam. I thought you'd get pinched in that tight spot in the right lane, you're pretty brave going through there with a camera running. Well done.

Posted by Richard at June 3, 2009 06:38 AM

wow... ballsy

Posted by joel at June 3, 2009 06:39 AM

It sounds that you need to clean your bicycle chain. Damn, I have to do this too ;)

Posted by radek at June 3, 2009 06:48 AM

You're lucky nobody opened their car door.

Posted by Pauly at June 3, 2009 07:29 AM

sam! this movie so impressive that I almost forgot you were using a markII! I also tried to riding a bicycle and shooting photos, but I have no techincal that could shooting well. awesome!

Posted by Chesky at June 3, 2009 07:40 AM

nice concepte

Posted by hnawelhik at June 3, 2009 08:18 AM

Yeaaa! FedEx! Oh, and great shot and vid too. That camera is amazing and it's killing me not having one. Thanks for the great shots!

Posted by Jeff at June 3, 2009 08:24 AM

I really like these action/movement shots. Cool video too! You ride really well without using your hands. lol!

Keep up the great work Same! :)

Posted by Kyra at June 3, 2009 08:30 AM

That is the coolest video ever!
You are right, the wide angle lens definately makes your cycling look dangerous and faster too. I am a cyclist, and it looks like you are tracking at about 40km/h, but probably only doing 20-25km/h. Love how you ran the yellow light too. I also love that you are moving through traffic faster than the cars!

Posted by JasOn at June 3, 2009 08:39 AM

ohmygosh! Thanks for the absolutely mad video! and how did you take photos while riding! (i noticed you've posted shots like this in the past, so must be really experienced)

Love the video, just amazing how it takes me right into Toronto...and what is that crowd of people at the end of the video?

Posted by Jess at June 3, 2009 09:08 AM

Crazy! That wide angle makes everything look deadly! Great footage.

Posted by Scott Murdoch at June 3, 2009 09:21 AM

Nice sequence! Good thing no one opened a car door.

Posted by Andy McCraw at June 3, 2009 09:23 AM

Sam, I'm loving it. This is so cool. More please!!!!!

Posted by Clarence Johnson at June 3, 2009 09:24 AM

wonderful... I feel slightly more dangerous this Wednesday morning with my espresso.

I haven't seen anything like this before, well done.

Posted by Natalie at June 3, 2009 09:29 AM

I liked how your video was had a traveling destination and at the end you finally made it to the big event. Not sure what the event was but you made it. On another note, the video seemed pretty intense. I kept thinking you might wipe out on the curb out get hit by a car. Keep up the great work. Perhaps a video near Frank Gehry Architecture could be next?

Posted by Kurt W at June 3, 2009 09:52 AM

I'm pretty sure that trip would look dangerous regardless of the lens.

!!!

Posted by Nick W at June 3, 2009 10:00 AM

Wow, you're brave - I don't think I could do that with cheap camcorder, never mind the 5D mkII!! LOL. Awesome video... I love the still shot, too :)

Posted by Nancy at June 3, 2009 10:10 AM

Exciting! (You're certainly right about the wide-angle lens.)

As a veteran urban cyclist with good survival instincts, I recommend checking out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doored

Posted by Paul Hays at June 3, 2009 10:25 AM

Holy crap, even the Dutch (who are known for doing everything by bike) don't pass by cars on the right... Especially not without using your hands.
And now I'm wondering about the demonstration... Any pictures of that tomorrow?

Posted by Joyce at June 3, 2009 10:32 AM

I get nervous just watching this video. I wondered about from the still shot, with no hands on the handlebars. I've tried to do photos like this myself (in places much less treacherous for cyclists than downtown Toronto) but always feared for my camera (if not my own safety) after a few largely unsuccessful shots. You're a brave man.

Posted by Jim (365,000 words) at June 3, 2009 10:36 AM

I was cringing a few times, thinking how a wonderful 5D MkII was going to become instantaneously integrated with a few of those vehicles (oh, and I was concerned about your health as well). ;-)

Posted by Steve at June 3, 2009 11:21 AM

You looked like you had a couple of close calls there... I very much like this ddoi feature. :)

Posted by Annia at June 3, 2009 11:22 AM

I like how you ride right between the cops with one hand!

Posted by skube at June 3, 2009 11:27 AM

The framerate seems a little slow, is this normal

Posted by adam georgiou at June 3, 2009 11:30 AM

I love this! I posted it to my tumblr. :)

Posted by Gillian at June 3, 2009 11:38 AM

Man, don't even try that on Madrid, or it would be called straigh suicide.

(Anyway, simply biking, in Madrid, is a suicidal attempt)

Nice video, it's nice to see how is the city you shot in such a ride.

Posted by David at June 3, 2009 12:27 PM

did you hit some one?????...... this is crazy......i guess this is the response you were looking for ... maaaaan... it is crazy(in a good and freaky way)

Posted by vijay at June 3, 2009 12:41 PM

This is really cool. Kinda crazy feeling watching the video. Really amazing quality.

Posted by scott Webb at June 3, 2009 12:44 PM

Awesome video!

Posted by Urban at June 3, 2009 12:46 PM

Great video !
Because of you I want a 5D

Posted by Marc at June 3, 2009 01:04 PM

Impressive ride. There is a lot happening on your way. One gets the feeling to be right there in the street. Btw the first traffic light you crossed at 00:26 was definitely not green ;-)

Posted by Pierre at June 3, 2009 02:35 PM

Quite dangerous ride especially without hand.
And your first light was not really red but almost..
Nice job

Posted by Naimi at June 3, 2009 02:46 PM

I used to ride no-handed all the time, but that was in a small town with very little traffic. Just the thought of the parked cars, tracks in the road, squeezing between cars and the curb - all while holding a very nice & expensive pro DSLR - you're crazy!! :)

Posted by Kevin Williams at June 3, 2009 02:58 PM

OMG! Please be careful out there! That was my first thought. Then I realized that was a really cool video with great quality. I'm impressed. Third, it was interesting to see the city this way, rather than a snapshot at a time. (Not that your pictures are snapshots; they're so much more than that.)

Posted by Lois Elling at June 3, 2009 03:31 PM

@ Ian

That's not blood at 4:04, I believe it's horse dung from the mounted police.

Posted by Sierra B. at June 3, 2009 04:23 PM

holymoly. this is great and how did you get so lucky to get all those green lights?!
your a nut.

Posted by Vanessa at June 3, 2009 04:51 PM

Nice!!

Next step: do it on a motorbike.....

those lens really give the whole movie some spectacular effect.
nicely done!

Sam, what a courageous act! I loved it, so exciting, so entertaining. Loved it loved it. Sitting in my team room from Kingston.

Nice video!

GTA: Toronto!

Posted by Vince at June 3, 2009 10:44 PM

Dude, you're my hero!! That is amazing.

And to the person who thought that the substance on the ground at 4:04 was blood, I think it is actually horse shit from the riot control police horses at one of the many recent Tamil protests.

Posted by Al at June 3, 2009 10:44 PM

One unforeseen bump and you would have gone down hard, and possibly ruined your promising career as a content and life documentarian. Some may try this because of your lead, despite your recommendations to not copy what you did. I guess your disclaimer absolves you of your behaviour, eh?

Wonderful footage though.

Posted by Michael Thorner at June 4, 2009 02:26 AM

Love the tutorial video...please keep them coming!

Posted by Yossi at June 4, 2009 03:03 AM

should buy a liitle tripod-head that you connect on steer that way you could even cycle faster :)
Happy that we have cyclepaths in the netherlands :)

Posted by Marinus at June 4, 2009 03:42 AM

Hey, is it always so... deserted on the streets of your town? Here, in Warsaw, I can't fit my bike between the cars :)

Posted by krwck at June 4, 2009 04:47 AM

This video is terrific and goes sooo well with Flight of the Bumblebees!

Posted by David Deacon at June 4, 2009 11:38 AM

What a fool! I hope all of us cyclists will have to get a license so they can yank yours.

Posted by Buzz at June 4, 2009 01:22 PM

Does your wife know you are doing this!! Stay safe and becaureful!! Nice work though didn't think watching someone ride their bike on king st. would be so fun.

Posted by eilyn at June 4, 2009 01:41 PM

Got to try this, fabulous, creative use of the 5DmkII, Thanks

Posted by Mike H at June 4, 2009 09:37 PM

Next time you take the bike out and the camera you ought to mount something on the handlebars, perhaps a pinata. Maybe some stuffed animals . . . SS

Posted by ZiaSoleil at June 5, 2009 12:13 AM

Yaouzaa! A little to close for me Sam...
But love your Daily Dose!!
M :-)

Posted by Maur at June 5, 2009 10:11 PM

Cool!!
You are crazy but this video rules!!
Congrats

Posted by Alejandro at June 5, 2009 11:37 PM

Way to run the yellow light, you're a madman on the bike.

Posted by Jeremy at June 6, 2009 09:54 PM

Dude that is unbelievable. The section around 2:00 looks like a whole line of door prizes just waiting to be claimed. You are very brave... these streets are harrowing to cycle at the best of times with both hands on the bars!

Posted by RobOnWheels at June 9, 2009 05:04 PM

Riding your bike no-handed down a busy city street while filming with a $2500 camera - what could go wrong?

Like how you threaded the needle between the two cops at 3:46!

Posted by Turnbill at June 12, 2009 07:47 AM

cool!

Posted by andrea | amnesiak1978 at June 15, 2009 02:11 PM

awesome video...kinda got motion sick by just watching it lol

Posted by nala at June 21, 2009 10:19 PM

you know i think sam taped or strapped the 5d VERY well to his hand, so that it does not drop.. that's what i would do anyway, if i was doing this.

and some biking experience helps!

Posted by vit at June 30, 2009 04:06 PM

I was scared for you falling or dropping your camera.

Posted by Andrew at July 10, 2009 04:43 AM

Cop or no cop, this is the first time I've ever seen a bicyclist yield to pedestrians.

Posted by ppp at August 10, 2009 03:41 AM

Putting a wide angle on a camera will look like that you are going twice as fast as you normally would & yeah quite dangerous & I see you trying to manoeuvre this around the city. without any hands.. LOL.. Great shot though...
