Comments: goalie and the tower

Why only lenses under 70mm? Seems like an odd cutoff to me. Though - you could just use the 2x extender with the 24-70mm on an APS-C size sensor and still get up to 224mm out of the rig. Great detail and colors with the 17-40 though!

"Under 70mm" is a good rule.
Wish they'd adopt that at gigs.
A few times I had to put my old Fuji S5000 in the safe at a venue because they "don't allow pro cameras"

Anyway, nice shot, I like the three layers of colour, and the CN tower poking up so you know where you are!

and what if you use medium format camera say with 85mm lense, will they let you in?

This is a gem. That one guy out there all alone to fend for himself, poor chap. The clarity is superb, I think you had the right choice of lens with you.

What a great shot I love the empty green look of the field and the red business of the stands.

At a Jays game, out of curiosity, I asked one of the guards what kinds of cameras you were allowed to bring. He told me you weren't allowed to bring "big" cameras. When I asked him how big is "big" he shrugged and spread his hands to show the size - about the size of a soccer ball.

Who did you have to ask to find out about the 70mm?

Lucky you... here in the UK you wouldn't get anything other than a compact past security at a football match — I know, I've tried many times

Now that's a funny thing. I've seen the security guards allowing conpact cameras but disallowing SLRs on various events, but never witnessed them looking at the lens data... What would happen if you brought a small sensor compact with 70 mm lens? All these limitations just appear silly

Great colors! It seems that the goalkeeper had a easy day:D

Nicely done! I will have to pass it around here!

Interesting that they restrict the lens size. Good to know there's some protection for professionals for it's become too easy for anyone to take a good shot at least once in a while with so many doing it.
A friend noted how the car race pros he's contacted have been finding it tougher to make a dollar.
You don't get much with a 70mm lens without a huge pixel count.
I'd say you must love soccer to put up with that restriction.

Great shot. Beautiful perspective and colors. Also love the contrast between the bright colors and the stormy sky!

Well done!

the goalie is my neighbour. and a midfielder lives on my street as well. i keep expecting a soccer match to break out on the street.

Cool shot, Sam. I always think that the red seats were a good idea. They make the stands seem completely full of Toronto FC fans.

Another one of those great captures that you post that always look like they must be easy to take yet always reveal their special qualities on closer inspection and make me realise how much has to be right for it to look this good.

haha... 70 mm at what crop factor... the whole idea is silly as hell... 70mm on a high zoom p&s gives over 400mm equivalent... still can't stop laughing...

Hi Sam I like this shot better than the one on flicker. The goalie is crucial to the shot; the clouds are moving, but he and the spectators are not. I also like the colour contrast green, then a line of multipe colour, then red, then grey/blue. The composition was carefully executed, I think.

Nice! Me and my friend are in this shot :-) You can barely make us out in our non-red raincoats. (My friend, wearing yellow, was mortified when she discovered that's the Columbus colour)
