Comments: city in blue or black

Black and white for sure.

Posted by Peter at April 16, 2009 01:27 AM

The gray one I prefer

Posted by Majid at April 16, 2009 01:52 AM

i find the colour distracting; b&w for me.

Posted by Pierce at April 16, 2009 02:02 AM

The Blue... the loved the tones..
Fantastic pictures,

Posted by sridhar at April 16, 2009 02:22 AM

I really liked the black & white better. Both were nice though.

Posted by Jimmy at April 16, 2009 02:29 AM

i think i like the colored version better! but the b&w version looks also cool!

Posted by insk at April 16, 2009 02:54 AM

Hi
The colored one feels better I think
Nice picure !

Posted by cedric at April 16, 2009 03:05 AM

I prefer B&W one.

Posted by Nader Khorrami Rad at April 16, 2009 03:42 AM

I like the b/w version. Structures and sky make bigger impact in b/w IMO :) BTW this is my first comment on your site. I have been a subscriber for over an year now. Terrific photos.I found your photography to be quite inspirational and I have learned couple things mostly concerning composition and perspective.

Posted by Ashish at April 16, 2009 03:49 AM

i would choose the B&W one, The blue from the low light situation in the color image ain't something i like.

Posted by Marinus at April 16, 2009 03:50 AM

B&W looks like a very old picture. They are old school. The color seems a little more modern. But too dull.
On the color version, I am attracted by the reflection on the windows of a building left. This disturbs me and blocked me for reading the image. I can not go further than the parking.
On the B&W, I see the whole image, the reflection, then I continue until the background.
So I prefer the B&W.
:) But all your pictures are amazing !

(Sorry for my english) Bye.

Posted by MonsieurZenein at April 16, 2009 04:20 AM

b/w definitely !

Posted by Me, David at April 16, 2009 04:27 AM

I prefer the black & white version

Posted by Ivo at April 16, 2009 04:37 AM

Blue

Posted by Maeve1985 at April 16, 2009 04:49 AM

What is funny is that I just was asking myself which one I prefered...I really love black and white photos generally, but here, I spontaneously prefered the coloured one.
Can't explain why, it's more the result of a impression.

And I love all your cliches, I come here every morning, and it gives me inspiration for the day...

Sorry for the english and the not so elaborate vocabulary, but I'm french.

Posted by Helene at April 16, 2009 05:03 AM

personally i like the b/w version better all in all. in the color shot, the sky does provide a better contrast to the city though. both shots win!

Posted by john at April 16, 2009 05:12 AM

Hmmm. Tough one. The sky in the B&W shot looks great; like you used an IR filter. But the buildings look a little flat. The colour of the buildings in the second shot defines them better, but the sky is less dramatic... on balance I prefer the colour.

Posted by Richard at April 16, 2009 05:14 AM

I think to prefer the black&white version

Posted by BoB at April 16, 2009 05:50 AM

I like the black and white. In color, with that sky, the range of colors is small enough that it doesn't jump out as much. In black and white the details really begin to emerge. Plus: It looks timeless.

Posted by Sean at April 16, 2009 06:01 AM

DEFINITELY the color version! Very nice!

Posted by jan at April 16, 2009 06:48 AM

i'm a huge fan of black and white, i almost always have rolls of ilford kicking about in my bag somewhere but this shot is definitely better in colour.

Posted by brendan at April 16, 2009 06:53 AM

I prefer the black and white - the colors seem a bit muted.

Posted by Scott at April 16, 2009 07:11 AM

I like the black and white better.

Posted by Mike at April 16, 2009 07:25 AM

me, i'd like to go with black and white. it feels stronger and the way clouds standing out, i just love it!

Posted by Luke Lee at April 16, 2009 07:32 AM

I'm not quiet sure (as they are both great) but right now I prefer the colour one. It has such a mystic blue...

But I could change my mind in a couple of hours ;-)

Sunny greetings from Germany! caro

Posted by caro at April 16, 2009 07:33 AM

I like the patterns and textures in the B&W one, but I also like how the color brings out more depth in the other one...

I'm leaning more towards the B&W version

Posted by Stefan at April 16, 2009 07:33 AM

I like the "metallic feel" of the color version best.

Posted by John A. at April 16, 2009 07:43 AM

I dunno if you agree, but the way Toronto is presented here is pretty moody. At first I thought the black and white was really moody. Then I looked at the subdued colour on the 2nd version, and that is even moodier. So colour version for me. Definitely

Posted by Michael at April 16, 2009 07:48 AM

well both of them look absolutely fantastic ... I amazed by the quality of LX3 and I think each (colored of b&w) has its own effect depending on how you present them ... but if you asked me I like the colored one because of this interesting color range ...

Posted by Ali Afghah at April 16, 2009 07:50 AM

I prefer the blue, as it shows so much of detail in it.. Great work as usual :)

Posted by Antony at April 16, 2009 08:03 AM

I better like b&w version.

Posted by Rishat at April 16, 2009 08:12 AM

the blue...i think it gives more feel to the shot. and if its cityscaped involved, i think thats what it needs.

Posted by Jessica at April 16, 2009 08:13 AM

Personally, I like the color version. Going to Toronto for a month in July ... looking forward to it! Cheers, Dion.

Posted by Dion at April 16, 2009 08:14 AM

colored.

Posted by Stephen at April 16, 2009 08:17 AM

I like blue.

Posted by individuel at April 16, 2009 08:20 AM

Nice work! I prefer the color version. You can see the reflections and some of the detail better.

Posted by Javajulie at April 16, 2009 08:20 AM

i vote for color. subtle.

Posted by chris houston at April 16, 2009 08:38 AM

I would personally chose the black and white, it seems more profound to me, and you can better feel the contrast between the lightest and darkest tones of the buildings.

Posted by Tiago Fonseca at April 16, 2009 08:43 AM

I like the blue better. Toronto is grey enough in the winter!

Posted by Nicole at April 16, 2009 08:44 AM

I prefer the color. The B&W seems a bit dark and might look better a bit lighter more like the color, but I think the color gives better detail by the color variations.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at April 16, 2009 09:07 AM

I love the color version. Of course, I think your color processing style is gorgeous so it was an obvious choice for me.

Posted by memekode at April 16, 2009 09:08 AM

i like colored version more.

Posted by busse at April 16, 2009 09:10 AM

B&W is always more dramatic and gritty, but I get more information from the colour shot, time of day and the reflection on the building is much more pronounced. It is a cool distant blue.

Posted by JoeB at April 16, 2009 09:15 AM

Black and White looks better to me :)

Posted by Patrick at April 16, 2009 09:19 AM

I am leaning more towards the color one. I like the blues and it seems to be more *ahem* 'contrasty' The sky in the BW is slightly more dramatic, hard to decide here, but the overall tone is more somber on the color. I suggest you call it 'wednesday morning'

Posted by luis Cerezo at April 16, 2009 09:51 AM

I like the colour better. i love the blue tints.

Posted by stefanie at April 16, 2009 09:57 AM

B&W. The color version is pretty near monochrome anyway. Good image.

Posted by Rod at April 16, 2009 10:06 AM

Black and white.

Posted by Cody at April 16, 2009 10:13 AM

I like the color one better. In this case the black and white seems very drab to me. Nice shot, regardless.

Posted by Patrick at April 16, 2009 10:13 AM

hi i'm just blog walking and see what you've done.
mmm.. i prefer the black and white one
(if you ask me to decide) :P

Posted by paperclip at April 16, 2009 10:23 AM

i like the treatment on the colour version better.

Posted by Kevin at April 16, 2009 10:27 AM

i prefer the colour version here

Posted by Jeremy at April 16, 2009 10:30 AM

I'm a sucker for t hat blk and wht, the balance of the brights in the sky and darks of the city. As usual nice shot

Posted by patrick at April 16, 2009 10:57 AM

I'm partial to the B&W myself. It seems that the LX3 really excels in the dynamic B&W, but that aside I think there is more of a broody atmosphere in the shot as opposed to the softer colours in the colour version (which is also a great shot)

Posted by stephen at April 16, 2009 11:06 AM

B&W definitely! But both are nice :D

Posted by mel at April 16, 2009 11:10 AM

both of them are fantastic

Posted by Farnaz at April 16, 2009 11:17 AM

I am partial to the B&W. B&W to me is classy.

Posted by Darren at April 16, 2009 11:21 AM

Color!

Posted by Kim at April 16, 2009 11:24 AM

B&W. Definitely.

tough, but color maybe.

Posted by Carlos Bohorquez Nassar at April 16, 2009 11:50 AM

It's a nice shot either way. I like the color more though.

Posted by Robert at April 16, 2009 11:56 AM

colored is better

Posted by Andriy at April 16, 2009 12:05 PM

The black and white, definitely. It's more evocative. Love your site, I check it religiously every day. Congratulations on your recent arrival, and keep up the fantastic work!

Posted by Aaron at April 16, 2009 12:25 PM

The B&W is my preference. It brings the buildings together while emphasizing the lighter shades allowing the eye to dart around the photo.

Posted by mcputz at April 16, 2009 12:31 PM

Both are nice. I love mood the black exudes better though.

Posted by Brian at April 16, 2009 12:40 PM

black and white is better for sure Sam. Good shot!

Posted by brad at April 16, 2009 12:46 PM

I like the blue photograph. I think the shading of light and colour in the sky is more effective in blue. Also the reflections are clearer in the blue photo. I like B/W photos, but not in this case. Barbara M

Posted by Barbara Michel at April 16, 2009 01:16 PM

Definitely the black and white. Something stark and lonely about it.

Posted by Nikki at April 16, 2009 02:07 PM

The top looks like a scene of of Batman, a bit scarey and beautiful in that way; the bottom is beautiful and peaceful. So...my vote depends on what you're going for. Did you adjust exposure compensation or just ISO?

Posted by Lecia at April 16, 2009 02:11 PM

black and white.
I like it(Y)

Posted by michelle at April 16, 2009 02:35 PM

The colour one does it for me.

Posted by arun at April 16, 2009 02:36 PM

I prefer greyscale in the majority of the picture. However, in the bottom left - especially in the reflections on that building, I like the color.

Posted by Ross Lace at April 16, 2009 02:41 PM

B/W

Posted by Danny at April 16, 2009 02:59 PM

The black and white is better. It makes the photo look more old-fashioned and historic in my opinion. Although the sky is nice in color. Black anad white is much better.

Posted by Justin Campbell at April 16, 2009 03:05 PM

b&w

Posted by DJJ at April 16, 2009 04:08 PM

Definitely the color version

Posted by Armin at April 16, 2009 04:15 PM

I like the b&w, the clouds look more ominous.
And it makes the city seem...
somehow unreal, which is pretty neat

Posted by Mike at April 16, 2009 04:17 PM

Lovely conversion! B/W 4 me!

Posted by kathy at April 16, 2009 04:23 PM

ooo. moody blues for me.

Posted by cyn at April 16, 2009 04:35 PM

I read some of the comments and got some ideas, but still, I prefer the color one because the B&W is kinda reminds me of the era of industrialization (50s) and Toronto is not that! On the other hand the blue is a nice blue.

Posted by Miguel Navarrete at April 16, 2009 06:21 PM

the black and white is beautiful, but i can't get over the band of clouds just above the buildings in the colour image. nice pic!

Posted by peter w. at April 16, 2009 06:32 PM

the color version has a nice blue tone to it.

Posted by Kirstan at April 16, 2009 06:49 PM

both. each one with different sensations.

Posted by rob at April 16, 2009 07:43 PM

I surprise myself but prefer the colour version this time. Varied tones of blue rather than just shades of gray make it more interesting to my eye, reflections in glass are more striking, and I LOVE the blues and browns playing off of each other. Scrumptious!

Posted by Jain at April 16, 2009 08:00 PM

Definitely the color--blue tints especially.

Posted by jane Elkins at April 16, 2009 08:18 PM

I really really loved blue, thats a fantastic click, looks superb!

Posted by Mona at April 16, 2009 08:30 PM

Posted by Andrew Ferguson at April 16, 2009 10:26 PM

definately the black and white, the clouds look way better

Posted by Keegan Eddie at April 16, 2009 10:43 PM

The blue one - the mood is closer to the contemporary city that's represented.

Posted by Paulo at April 16, 2009 11:00 PM

i like how the b/w one is not completely desaturdated

i think the bw looks better, the coloured one just seems kinda dead

Posted by christine at April 16, 2009 11:16 PM

Colored as far as I'm concerned. I like the blue-ish hue.

Posted by Alexandra at April 16, 2009 11:22 PM

color version. the colors are dull and blend together creating which is a nice subtle touch.

Posted by Alex K. at April 16, 2009 11:29 PM

I prefer the coloured photograph. The colour is subtle and muted so that it acts upon me quite evocatively of an early morning although I'm probably quite wrong about the time of the shot. I find it atmospheric in a way I don't with the black and white one. Often I prefer black and white or sepia in photos but this one for sure I prefer 'in colour'.

Posted by Janie at April 16, 2009 11:34 PM

love it..

Posted by mang Anto at April 16, 2009 11:46 PM

The black and white is stunning. Defenetly the B&W

Posted by Anssi Saviluoto at April 17, 2009 02:52 AM

I prefer the B&W one

Posted by Mike Schaffner at April 17, 2009 08:49 AM

The blue - for sure

Posted by anne at April 17, 2009 09:44 AM

i like the clouds in colour and the buildings in black and white. add another option for the mix of the two:)

Posted by hadi at April 17, 2009 10:37 PM

i tend to the colored version in this case. first of all the sky works much better for there. further i like the lines the buildings provide, which (at least for me) is a domain of bnw, but the damped colors kindof add a little mosaic-feeling.
well i think that's what hushes through my mind :D

Posted by martin_d at April 18, 2009 08:10 AM

Colour!

Posted by Meaghan at April 18, 2009 08:46 AM

B&W!!!

Posted by v at April 18, 2009 10:11 PM

B&W for sure... so deep and rich without color

Posted by Bryan at April 19, 2009 01:42 AM

I like them both, however, I find that I am more inclined to the color one. The reason is the blue-grey color in the picture. It is a strange powerful color.

Posted by Sally at April 19, 2009 10:05 PM

How about half-way between the two. I put the black and white on top of the colour and reduced the opacity to 50% (or so) and it looks quite nice maintaining a little of the two worlds... ;)

Posted by Philippe Roy at April 20, 2009 12:52 AM

I like the BW a lot more, even though the blue tones are beautiful. However, removing the colors lets me concentrate more on the lines and shapes, making it more of an abstract.

Posted by sindalf at April 20, 2009 05:11 AM

While it's true like somone else said that the b&w lets you look at the whole photo and not get stuck on the details, I like noticing new things with every pass.

Like that in the window, one of the cars looks like it's signaling to turn. And that someone thought it was a good idea to have a green billboard on red bricks. And how the shadows on the bildings are more subtle.

Might be that I'm a city freak, but all these small things make the colour version stronger.
