Definitely Santa Monica. Another nice shot.
Posted by Rob at March 23, 2009 01:57 AMit looks more like a still from crackdown to me.
Posted by josh jones at March 23, 2009 01:58 AMYep, it looks to be the Santa Monica pier. (Maybe from about Santa Monica Blvd. and Ocean Ave?)
Posted by Mark at March 23, 2009 02:22 AMHow did you get such a DOF @ f1.8?!! I knew you're a good photographer, but I didn't know you do magic as well :)
Posted by Mehrad at March 23, 2009 03:31 AMHehe, I thought the same about the photo, this looks like a screenshot from GTA4. Anyway, what do they use that big-ass light for?
Posted by TheOm3ga at March 23, 2009 05:39 AMhaha. That's exactly what i thought. GTA.
Carnival on the pier.
Posted by m.b at March 23, 2009 07:54 AMThat is definitely a movie set. The massive 5k lights, bunch of grip and office trucks.
I love the subtle contrast in this shot.
Posted by Emmanuel at March 23, 2009 08:10 AMThere is a part of GTA4 that is layed out almost exactly like that. I'm not sure what part of NYC it's supposed to be though. I believe it's in the southern Brooklyn/Broker part of the map. On the GTA4 map it appears to be called Firefly Island, and acoording to google maps it's actually Coney Island/Brighton Beach.

Posted by Clayton O'Neill at March 23, 2009 08:27 AMYes, that's definitely Santa Monica Pier, you made that photograph from the Palisades on Ocean Avenue.
That parking lot is where I first saw Cirque du Soleil, in the mid-1980s.
The older version of that Pier fell into the Bay following some incredible storms in the Winter of 1982, rebuilding took awhile but the Pier is now much better.
Posted by Richard Leighton Dixon at March 23, 2009 08:35 AMPerfect balance between the light and shadow areas here, however that was achieved. Digital sure is good in that area. Grand theft auto? Your experience is wider than I'd expect. Especially in the dark side of life.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at March 23, 2009 09:53 AMLooks like a film shoot to me. Portable
light(leaning slightly),white trucks near by in the lot.
You remembered correctly, it's the Santa Monica Pier!
Posted by David at March 23, 2009 11:40 AMYeah, this is a shot of the Santa Monica Pier from the bluffs in Pacific Palisades park (about 5 min from my apt)!
Posted by Nick Schneble at March 23, 2009 11:57 AMGreat shot, Sam!
And that's definitely Santa Monica pier. Here's one I recently took of the arcade, which you can just make out in your photo "in front" of the roller coaster: http://andrew.stottsan.net/photography/gallery/001009.php
Posted by Andrew Stott at March 23, 2009 12:45 PMIt also looks like a miniature model. Great picture.
Posted by Pop9 at March 23, 2009 01:04 PMYessir; good memory: that is in fact Santa Monica Pier off in the distance.
Posted by acb at March 23, 2009 01:14 PMIt actually really reminds me of a scene from CRACKDOWN on the XBOX 360 - which was an excellent GTA variant, that did CLIMBING beter than any other game to date.
Posted by dan at March 23, 2009 03:46 PMNice picture. It realy looks like the pier of GTA 4.
Posted by Emmel at March 23, 2009 05:16 PMjust took a walk in that same area a few weeks back. Ah but back in Tejas now. Nice shot
Posted by patrick at March 24, 2009 01:02 PMohh wow, wish i was there! seems like a miniature foreground, really nice shot :)
Posted by dhiraj at March 26, 2009 11:13 AMYep, Santa Monica it is. The Pier from the other side: http://www.flickr.com/photos/belzaah/2524578761/
