I love the title ;-) It's spot on for this image.

"help jack! MY LEG AAARH!"

Apart from a good composition, I liked the exposure too! Details in the shadow and highlights are intact.

Love that smoke!

Posted by MD at February 27, 2009 06:57 AM

That is just so clever and funny!

Holy cow, I just fell off my chair! This one blew me away, maybe the crispness of the B&W, or that elusive smoke monster. This looks like a movie scene still shot. Wonderful work once again Sam!

Wow, thank you so much for this photo. I know it may sound a bit ridiculous, but this photo really hits me about the situation of the poor in our city. The smoke monster in front and the Sally-Ann in the background is powerful - the tiny David of hope vs. the giant Goliath of cold, chemicals and capitalism.

Can I ask where you took your exposure from in this image? It looks like to would be a hard one to determine.

ha! that's great. perfectly titled.
and a really nice shot!

Posted by jodi at February 27, 2009 08:45 AM

Nice! It's good to see old smokey in the real world. Since you're a fellow "Lost" fan, you might enjoy this shot I took when I was in Hawaii last year.

Spooky! Great picture. In fact, I have to say that, overall, you have one of the best photo blogs going, with consistently interesting and unique images.

Smoke monster for sure :)

Posted by Lulufar at February 27, 2009 09:09 AM

Great shot! Funny how it has a very old feel about it - like early 1900's - must be the B&W adds to it.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at February 27, 2009 09:18 AM

Ha ha! Great image, by the way, but the title and comments make it even more enjoyable.

This isn't a jab at Chase Jarvis, is it? (kidding)

I like the sun creeping in from the side of the building!

No such thing as too much Lost. Oh, and Great Shot.

Posted by Dan at February 27, 2009 01:18 PM

I love the fact that the smoke seems to b coming from around the corner. That really reinforces your title :)

Posted by Averi at February 27, 2009 01:58 PM

This is money! really love the tones. and +1 for awesome title

Hi Sam,
Great pic.
Actually 'technically' steam is invisible. When steam condenses it forms small water droplets, which are what we see in clouds and in that lovely pic.
PS What the heck is LOST? I'm off to Google.

Posted by Jim at February 27, 2009 05:59 PM

Although the photo is quite 'dense', it still grabs you immediately. Especially the ray of sunlight got me!

Great one

Posted by Joris at February 27, 2009 06:18 PM

Wow. What an awesome shot. And how suitable for bw conversion. I'm usually totally upset about the high quality standard of your blog, but this one really kicks me of!

Posted by mbecher at February 27, 2009 07:18 PM

One of your best!
Perfect, a masterpiece

Posted by asd at February 27, 2009 09:16 PM

Huh? There are still people watching LOST!? It LOST it's way a long time ago. Still envy your work Sam ;-) Great, thanks.

Good one! The "STOP" sign and the smoke monster together are just excellent! This photo makes me laughing! I love it! Well done, Sam!

Posted by Ilya Genkin at March 1, 2009 01:14 AM

That was EXACTLY my thought - too much Lost on the brain! Great, great shot

Posted by Betsy Barron at March 2, 2009 08:07 AM

PHENOMENAL! I have to agree with one of the other commentaries above that this reminds me of a 1930's movie set...The minute I saw it I couldn't help but think of Dick Tracy comic. It's got a cool old feel about it. Even the guy in the background with his funky beard and knit cap...okay so maybe his runners are ruining it but you get the picture.

Posted by Kiana at March 4, 2009 09:57 AM

The title under the Salvation Army says "Hand of god in the Heart of the City" and the smoke is coming out from behind the building (Hand of god??) !!! with the 30's movie effect, the combination is awesome!!
Great shot :)

Sam and Jim: Technically, it's WATER VAPOUR. :)
