Nice manhole shot. Manhole covers are a great theme and some day I plan to publish a coffee table book featuring manhole covers of the world.
Great picture Sam, I love all the vanishing lines and the curved roofs on the houses refer back to the manhole cover beautifully.
Actually, this pic is near the Mason/Union intersection in the North Beach area.
Posted by philip at February 19, 2009 12:54 AMThat's Mason Street just north of Union Street. It's actually in North Beach (Haight Ashbury is on the other side of town)
Posted by Ohad at February 19, 2009 12:55 AMnot exactly haight ashbury... you're looking north towards angel island - the trolley is another important clue, no trolleys in the haight... - i think you might be a little west of chinatown, maybe close to coit tower...
Posted by aaron at February 19, 2009 01:58 AMGreat shot! Hmmm... don't think this is Haight-Ashbury. I think this is Russian Hill/Nob Hill. HA doesn't have the cable car lines, and you can't see the Bay like you do here.
Posted by d at February 19, 2009 02:37 AMHaight/Ashbury doesn't have a cable car line, and it doesn't face Angel Island in the bay
Posted by myko at February 19, 2009 03:27 AMThat is not the Haight, cable cars only run on on California, Powell, Hyde, Mason, Washington and Jackson. That shot can only be from Hyde and Mason, it looks like Hyde :)
Posted by Alexander Folsom at February 19, 2009 04:04 AMVery nice shot, the sky has come out very nice. The houses on the right are so symmetric, I guess they were all made together. Can you tell me if there are still any trams. I am asking because I can't see the overhead cable. Maybe they get power from the ground, the central track as in trainscould be for that but I guess that would be a little dangerous on the roads
Posted by navin harish at February 19, 2009 04:50 AMThis is not at Haight and Ashbury. This is the other side of town.
Posted by Kelley at February 19, 2009 08:41 AMHi,
You have a very good eye and I appreciate the daily dose. THANK YOU.
This is a great composition, strong line, strong foreground anchor. Classic composition.
Perfect world? Use less depth of field to draw attention even more to you key subject. Perfect world? Variation where tram is visible on the left side in the foreground to improve balance of image left to right. As it stands, the shadows are very heavy for me, creating an unnecessary imbalance, distracting from what you set up in the composition. Or, try a different light, softer/later/twi.
THANK YOU.
Alec
I do like this picture, and the picture you are linking to. I enjoy that to get your pictures by mail every day.
I don't like your Send as E-card function. Why? I use it to get people to visit your page, but you send them elsewhere.
Can you find a Send as E-card, there take people to your page, then it's...
Perfect!!!

Posted by Thomas at February 19, 2009 09:45 AMLooks like you used a polarizer on it.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at February 19, 2009 10:22 AMBeautiful shot, i love the pattern of the buildings on the right side... and the depth.
I'm wondering if that city is SanFrancisco... :)
nice shot!
Posted by dhiraj at February 19, 2009 10:31 AMThats a beautiful click.
Which camera did you use for this shot?
Lovely perspective! Loved the dark blue sky! Those hanging cables..:-(
Posted by Abhijit Dharmadhikari at February 19, 2009 12:07 PMActually, your photo was taken on Russian Hill -- specifically, the corner of Mason and Union Streets, looking north. See:

The clue: there are no cable cars in the Haight.
Best regards,
Bob
Sorry but that's not Haight Ashbury. There is no cable car that runs to Haight Ashbury, this is most likely Mason just north of Union. Check out the Google maps street view. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=sf&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.909425,79.101563&ie=UTF8&ll=37.800078,-122.412506&spn=0.00145,0.002414&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=37.800203,-122.412532&panoid=j7Y_vj6z_saNNLaO64OlCg&cbp=12,6.3691198462084815,,0,6.4153591864341255
btw - I love your photos I check them everyday, as I live in SF now and used to live around King and Jarvis so your selection of photos is constant reminder of my old home and my new one. Great work and thank you for sharing.
It's a great shot, but there are no cable car lines in the Haight area. It looks like the Powell/Wharf cable car line, looking North at Angel Island. Probably closer to North Beach.
Posted by Bukanza at February 19, 2009 12:54 PMJust wanted to let you know this is a beautiful photo of Mason St. between Union and Filbert in San Francisco, not of Haight & Ashbury. Such a beautiful day!
Posted by Fiona at February 19, 2009 02:30 PMAs a native San Franciscan, I can tell you this isn't the Haight.
Looks like you're in North Beach or Russian Hill looking towards Fisherman's wharf and the bay. That's Angel Island in the distance.
There ain't no cable cars in the Haight.
A
a good perspective.
Posted by hamed M. at February 19, 2009 02:39 PMVery nice picture, but...
Actually located at Mason & Union

Looking north
You can see it on Street View
Just love all the different lines in this image. Beautiful colors also with the neutral houses and the cool blue sky.
Posted by Frida at February 19, 2009 03:40 PMThis neighborhood is pretty far from Haight Ashbury. There are no cable cars in that area. This is likely near North Beach or on Hyde Street.
Posted by RW at February 19, 2009 03:42 PMHey Sam - always love your shots. This one captures the spirit and architecture of San Fran very well.
I actually think it's on Mason street looking north with Angel Island in the distance. Neither Haight or Ashbury have the old trolly cars running on them.
Either way, it's a great shot and I look forward to many more.
Cheers
Kevin
