Comments: gehry and the sky

I prefer the colored one, though the b&w is also great!

Probably the picture wouldn't work this way if there were no clouds at all?! I like the contrast between the perfect lines of the building and asymmetric clouds :-)

Posted by caro at July 17, 2008 01:33 AM

I love this in color - it seems as though there is more dimension to it. The black and white version is also nice, although it has a completely different feel to it.

Beautiful work.

Posted by willowlaughter at July 17, 2008 01:41 AM

Hmm, great! Really interesting look make me to comment. I prefer this colour one - the steel blue passing to dark sky blue...perfect. Black and white is also impressive, but in this one is cooling sensation.

Posted by aligator at July 17, 2008 01:58 AM

I think I very slightly prefer the color - the warm tones reflected in the base of the building give it a different feel (livelier?) than the black and white (which feels deeper).

Posted by Mark at July 17, 2008 01:59 AM

I am no expert, but the colour looks amazing!

Posted by Artiom at July 17, 2008 02:04 AM

Amazing shot!

P.S.
I would go for the color version

Posted by Jasper at July 17, 2008 02:10 AM

Color, definitely. It adds depth, in my opinion.

Posted by Xr at July 17, 2008 02:20 AM

Both are beautiful (you propably already know that)
But for me the color version is more vibrant, I can almost feel the metal of the panels.
But it's just my point of view.
P.S. It's always a pleasure every morning to discover your perspective on the world around you, so thanks for that.

Posted by Pouhou at July 17, 2008 02:20 AM

They're both good! I have a personal preference to color but the b&w provides a stronger image.

Posted by Peter at July 17, 2008 02:22 AM

Really a great picture. I like the colors and the lines.
Looks a little bit like a painting.

Posted by Sven at July 17, 2008 02:36 AM

Colour!!! colour is amazing. A stunning photograph, well presented.

Where can I start? It all flows together so well--the shapes, the tones, the sky, the clouds, it all works.

On another note. I love the architectual design. The walls look like they are made of stacked metalic brick work--a great touch to the esthetic pleasingness of the building--very classic, yet modern.

Posted by scott at July 17, 2008 02:43 AM

I do much prefer color one, gives much sense of 3D.

Posted by Giancarlo at July 17, 2008 02:49 AM

I prefer the color one at all!

Posted by Arnau at July 17, 2008 02:49 AM

Exceptional image! Works best in colour imho.

Mike

Posted by lightseeker at July 17, 2008 02:55 AM

Wow - this is fantastic photo! The lines and curves together with pattern are fantastic! Color version is far better than B/W because of color transition from warm to dark blue! That is missing in b/w version.

This is simply amazing photo!
Good job!!

Posted by Peter at July 17, 2008 03:40 AM

I must say I prefer the colour version. The silver building works so well with the blue and white sky

Posted by onewayphoto / Mark at July 17, 2008 03:49 AM

I'm switching between colour and BW... I'm doubting... maybe the colour ?

Posted by Marhilde at July 17, 2008 03:57 AM

Truly superb phot and definitely colour. I adore how the glossy brown near the bottom left flows into the blue monochrome.

Posted by Joanne at July 17, 2008 04:43 AM

The colored version is better.

Posted by alexandru savu at July 17, 2008 04:45 AM

Absolutely love it... And I prefer the color version, but maybe that's because I saw it before the B&W!

Posted by onedayforever at July 17, 2008 04:46 AM

For once I think colours wins over B&W here. You have a really interesting range/shades of blue in the shot.

Posted by Byron at July 17, 2008 05:06 AM

The beauty of titanium is its simultaneuously diffuse and vivid reflections... the colour shot make the most of the material, for sure. The play of warm and cool colours just has a richness that B&W misses.

Posted by Collin Gardner at July 17, 2008 05:35 AM

the b&w one is cool, although a little sinister. i like the colour version better, but maybe it's just because of my great mood today ;)

Posted by michi at July 17, 2008 05:41 AM

Another great photo. The gradual change in tones and colour is really nice. I prefer the colour version slightly more then the b&w; but it's a very close call.

Posted by Sule Bryan at July 17, 2008 05:50 AM

This is an AWESOME shot!

Posted by Kait at July 17, 2008 06:10 AM

Colours! It look like the Guggenheim museum, I think...
Great photoblog!

Posted by Ben at July 17, 2008 06:27 AM

I love black & white, prefer it, usually, but your blues & browns win out here!
Wonderful!

Posted by lyn at July 17, 2008 06:30 AM

Mmmmm....beautiful!

I think somehow I like the B&W more. It contains a lot of "colours" in itself already.

Posted by evella at July 17, 2008 06:41 AM

Both are very strong images, and the tones are beautiful in both. The B/W might just shade it - I'd love to see it in a huge print.

Posted by John Smyth at July 17, 2008 06:42 AM

I think both are grate, but I would lean toward the one in color I think there is a little more depth to it.

Posted by Laura at July 17, 2008 06:58 AM

Go with the colour. Gorgeous.

Posted by JS at July 17, 2008 07:30 AM

b+w for sure...the shadows are amazing.

Color!

Posted by Joe at July 17, 2008 07:37 AM

I was about to say "color", but seeing the black and white version made me change my mind instantly. Beautiful shot, the composition is beautiful and the delicate gradients to die for!

Posted by nattfodd at July 17, 2008 07:39 AM

These colors and shading create a really eerie effect that I like, but the ominous black and white is much more striking and powerful.

Posted by Mike O'Neill at July 17, 2008 08:07 AM

stick with colour! Awesome shot.

Posted by jkm at July 17, 2008 08:25 AM

Colour for me. Being a person of meteorological background, I like how the building takes on the colour of the sky.

Another of many great photo's!

Posted by Pete at July 17, 2008 08:31 AM

WOW...a masterpiece of light and form and shade and shape and WOW :)

Posted by Lorraine at July 17, 2008 08:36 AM

Wow, how "Get Smart".

The black and white one certainly emphasizes and makes the sky dramatic, but the colour one keeps the attention on the structure.

Brad

Posted by Brad at July 17, 2008 08:37 AM

Normally I prefer b&w but in this case, the blue and bronze really bring something extra to this shot.

Posted by Bruce at July 17, 2008 08:40 AM

I think both are great but I prefer the colour picture (odd - I had assumed I would prefer the black and white)

Posted by Lisa at July 17, 2008 08:48 AM

beautiful lines you've captured wonderfully!! I favor the colour, however, both are breathtakingly beautiful.

Posted by Cheryl at July 17, 2008 08:49 AM

Definately B&W!! maybe because I'm fan of B&W photos, but the sky is so dramatic in B&W. I love it! and Frank Gehry :P

Posted by zofia at July 17, 2008 08:52 AM

I think color version is better =)

Posted by Montag at July 17, 2008 08:53 AM

I like the full colour version. The blues and yellows set off the curves and angles nicely! Beautiful shot.

color. in the black and white you can't appreciate the warmer foreground.

Posted by liz at July 17, 2008 09:26 AM

The B/W is very dramatic and intense.
But I like colour version with the different hues of blue and gray.
Good on you Sam. Don't Stop.

Posted by Naimi at July 17, 2008 09:43 AM

colour :)

Posted by nina at July 17, 2008 09:44 AM

It's a fantastic shot to begin with, and I'm sure it's an oft-photographed building. Once again, Sam-Vision has produced a unique and striking image!

I prefer the colour. Perhaps it's my mood today. The BW brings out the shapes, but it also makes it much more abstract. As for my mood, it likes the warmth of the colour in the wall in the bottom-left which brings the photo together. If find that the colour version brings out the subtlety of the (morning?) light better... on the other hand, you upped the contrast in the BW version... hmm... now you're making me second guess myself. They're both fantastic!

Posted by Mike at July 17, 2008 09:47 AM

I like the photo better in color, because the building has a warm color in the front and the back ground is cold. Also the blue on the top of the building is almost the same as the blue of the sky. You don't she that on the black and white photo.

Posted by Christina at July 17, 2008 09:50 AM

Awesome shot. Great tones and shapes. I think I like the colour one but i see why its hard for you to decide.

Posted by Jesse Moscoe at July 17, 2008 09:50 AM

wow, nice point of view, the colors are great... that's an great example of when Gehry's architecture really sings!

Posted by eskepe at July 17, 2008 09:56 AM

That is a sick shot. Seriously. I prefer the blue.

Posted by seriocomic at July 17, 2008 09:58 AM

Definitely black and white. The color is lovely, but the black and white definitely has a mood to it.

Posted by Melissa at July 17, 2008 09:58 AM

These are breath-taking eather way.
But, in my opinion, the blue makes it more intense!

Greetings from Norway.

Posted by Kjell at July 17, 2008 10:01 AM

This is an amazing shot, colour, angle, texture etc. just perfect. Well done Sam. BTY, both B/W and colours looks fabulous.

Posted by patrick at July 17, 2008 10:08 AM

Great shot. I pick the colour version. The black and white would be nice if the shadows werent so dark, I feel that without the colour is doesn't have enough interest. Also would you mind posting a post process for this. Might I also add that, among many things, you are the master of usm. Take care.

Posted by Khayyam at July 17, 2008 10:33 AM

this is amassing, i like the color, the sky comes in the building!.

Wonderful work. Congrats!

Posted by Katherine at July 17, 2008 10:43 AM

I have to go with color, especially as the building changes from blue to gold.

Posted by Gary at July 17, 2008 11:03 AM

Amazing.

Posted by Amanda-lea at July 17, 2008 11:05 AM

Wonderful shot. I love the warm tones on the bottom of the building and then it cools off to the top. The composition is perfect with all the lines and angles. Very nice.

Posted by Ben Brooks at July 17, 2008 11:17 AM

I like the color, but they are both so beautiful! I've never seen the sky so blue in LA. Love your work!

Posted by Nat at July 17, 2008 11:27 AM

Definitely the color version for me. That hint of warm colors in the bottom of the building are what make the image.

Posted by Roberta at July 17, 2008 11:30 AM

I really like the subtle tones in the colour shot. My vote is colour.

Posted by dano at July 17, 2008 11:49 AM

I like the colour one... the suggestion of the sunset, and the gradual transition to the sky colours works well for me...

Posted by Omer at July 17, 2008 11:55 AM

I like the color one more, the blue is just beautiful as it reflects in the steel.

Posted by Dirk Essl at July 17, 2008 11:56 AM

color!

Posted by dacian at July 17, 2008 12:28 PM

Color, definitely. the B&W is nice, but the yellow part in the colored photo at the bottom left really makes the colored version better.

Posted by ian at July 17, 2008 12:30 PM

Color. The colors are subtle enough that they do not distract from the forms; instead, they enhance the image.

Posted by kmkat at July 17, 2008 12:31 PM

Black and White. The colors are nice, but it's rare to find such subtle but distinct tones in black and white. I'm definitely all about it for this particular shot.

Posted by Peter at July 17, 2008 01:32 PM

Definitely the colour version is superior for sooo
many reasons. Fo0r expample, there is much more emotion in the colour version while a lot of detail is lost in the b&w picture.

Posted by edkal at July 17, 2008 01:51 PM

I had a hard time making up my mind, cause they are both very interesting and very different. My final choice: colour. Thanks for all the incredible pictures you post.

Color of course...

I like the way curves in sky matches the form of the building.

Posted by Vijay at July 17, 2008 02:35 PM

Of course colour! Beautiful shot by the way.
This is one of my favourite works of Frank Gehry and you have captured it as monumental as it is.

Posted by Kiana at July 17, 2008 02:36 PM

i agree with color; it's nearly monochromatic enough to work but provides more depth and interest than the b&w.

Posted by lisa at July 17, 2008 02:37 PM

Testing? Testing? 3rd time submitting a comment only for it to "disappear", not sure what the issue is.

Color please, I said more but getting tired of repeating myself.

The form reminds me of Italian Futurism specifically Unique Forms of Continuity by Umberto Boccioni.
About B/W vs. colour they are both beautiful.

This reminds me of the ROM Crystal - Daniel Libeskind meets Salvador DalĂ, maybe?

Anyways, great shot. As the majority of people have said here, it does seem to look better in colour. Any other shots of this building?

p.s. guess I am the only one who voted for b&w.

Definatly the colour photo since there are both warm and cool colours mixed in together on this...makes it look way better than in black and white. Love the lines of the building as well, they go very well with the clouds in the background...one of my Favorites so far!

Posted by Drin-chan at July 19, 2008 02:52 PM

BLACK AND WHITE!!!!!when I saw the colour picture I thought it was just okay but when I saw the black and white it took my breath away, colour is the way you see it with your eyes anyways but to see it in black and white takes it to another world it;s kinda dark I love it!

Posted by stormie at July 19, 2008 06:16 PM

Prefer colour - the subtle tones like the green/yellow in the large, bottom panel are fantastic and obviously lost in b&w. Beautiful by the way.

Amazing shot! And I share your indecisiveness. Both versions are great. I really want to say I prefer the b&w, but because of the simplicity of the colours, and them being complimentary, I think I'll side with the colour version. It's so rare to find such a nice, well balanced colour image that isn't full of complicated and over-saturated colours.

Well done!
