It's a wonderful photo. He has a very kind face and I can see why he would be a photographer's favourite.

Sad :( I like the contrast of the pictures on the cup with the guy ... but sad, sad, sad....

The real question here is: did he win anything with his "roll up the rim" cup?

Posted by Chris at April 11, 2008 01:46 PM

Haha, maybe he should rrrrrrroll up the rim to see if he won something....

There is something very beautiful about this photo.
And it's heart-wrenching.

This is a great street portrait. It's full of untold stories -- what is the meaning of the cross? Is he a street person? Is he Jesus with the Grail? His hair and beard are long but tidy and quite beautiful, as is his gaze, and his clothes look newish, not at all shabby. Did he buy the Tim's coffee, or just pick up the cup? Is this a picture of high-odds hope? Close inspection reveals the rim to have been unrolled at the arrow, and re-rolled. Probably a losing cup. The one he was given at birth? We might guess he's homeless or tough or crazy because of the hair and beard and tattoo, but maybe he's just eccentric or an old biker or a teacher with a good income and grandchildren in Riverdale.

A GREAT picture! More portraits, please!

I am a DSLR hobbyist and I am curious as to how you are able to get such wonderful detail (face, hair, sleeve) in your photos? I see that you are using a Sigma 12-24 lense, and from reading reviews and from my own experience with a Sigma 17-35 lense, photos with the Sigma wide angle lenses always come out on the softer side. I have not been able to produce photos with details such as yours :(
