Weird and interesting.
g.
Love the depth of field. What was he doing out there? Is this his usual act, or was it a demonstration or protest of some sort?
Posted by Justin at June 21, 2007 03:30 AMHa, that's excellent. What was he singing "paperbag writer"?
Posted by Andy L at June 21, 2007 04:13 AMinterestig character without his face!!!
nice shot
Posted by odi photographie noir et blanc at June 21, 2007 07:48 AMFabulous composition, love the background subjects as well.
The musician made me LOL, because it identical to "The Unknown Comic" from a really cheesy and lude parody movie (better than Police Academy) from the 80's named "Night Patrol". If you haven't seen it, go check it out.
Thanks for sharing WVS!
Jason
This guy is famous! I can't remember his name off the top of my head but he plays in my neighbourhood all the time - without the bag!
Posted by Scott Murdoch at June 21, 2007 09:38 AMinteresting. nice guitar, (what appears to be) a nice suit, maybe he's just shy.
Posted by matt at June 21, 2007 09:40 AMGreat capture Goes to show having a camera at all times is important for catching those great moments .
Posted by McCulloch at June 21, 2007 09:51 AMInteresting....wonder if he gets lots of tips?
Posted by Alice at June 21, 2007 11:04 AMThis musician has busked in front of Roy Thomson Hall before Toronto Symphony concerts in fine weather (he takes the winters off - perhaps he migrates south?) for years and years......it makes for a pleasant hors d'oeuvre before the symphony. Only once have I seen him without his bag - he was late setting up one day.
The Unknown Guitarist with the Unknown Music - thanks for sharing, Sam!
Posted by Kathy at June 21, 2007 11:21 AMNice pic Sam,
I've been trying to take a picture of this guy for a long time (this is right in front of my old office)... but I'm afraid he'd come and kicks my ass!!
The DOF is very nice
I've seen this guy before! I like that he has a music stand, but no sheet music, and how he gets all dressed up only to cover his head in a paper bag. Neat shot.
Posted by Elinor at June 21, 2007 01:11 PManswer to buckethead? ;-)
Posted by hameed at June 21, 2007 01:16 PMhaha, I've seen this guy so many times. Nice capture of him. I like the black and white.
Posted by David at June 21, 2007 01:48 PMhe reminds me of a "human dalek"
Posted by David at June 21, 2007 01:48 PMKind of creepy actually...
Posted by Nathan at June 21, 2007 03:13 PMI love the remnants of color. Hard to see on my crappy monitor, but it's there.
Posted by matt at June 21, 2007 04:24 PMYay, he's back! I really have to go see him.
Posted by Gloria at June 21, 2007 04:48 PMI also have photos of the paperbag guitarist (so photogenic :P). If anybody would like to pay him a visit he is very relaxing to have street meat by, near Roy Thompson Hall.
Posted by Areta at June 21, 2007 08:00 PMOffsetting and Intriguing.
Three theories stuck my mind about this man:
First, he could be famous or hold a position of importance, thus he conceals his identity to avoid recognition while street performing.
Second, he is suffering from mental illness and is compelled, due to detachment with reality (such as in Schizophrenia), to behave as such.
Finally, and most likely, its a gimick to gather attention, which has been effective on a small scale.
Posted by scott at June 21, 2007 08:08 PMSam... you constantly amaze me with your photography... Great job man..
Great shot of Jian Ghomeshi. Man he has fallen fast.
Posted by Billy Dean at June 21, 2007 10:10 PMAmazing moment you have captured here.. also love the depth and mood.. Cheers!
Posted by SSH at June 21, 2007 10:17 PMNot long ago I witnessed an unpleasant altercation between this and another man. While playing his guitar, another man walked by, grabbed a handful of the guitarists change and bolted. The guitarist chased after him guitar and all but returned soon after to his corner cursing angrily, without change in hand or bag on his head. I'd say he's in his middle ages, somewhat rough around the edges. Plays beautifully given the circumstances. Just around the block from there a woman has taken up residence on a spot of sidewalk. Being there in Toronto that evening, alone and observant...I found the city very disenchanting.
Posted by David at June 24, 2007 09:21 PMYou know I once asked this guy why he had a paper bag over his head, and he replied "bad hair day".
Posted by CB at August 13, 2007 09:36 AMYou know I used to work around King and Simcoe.. where this guy usually plays. One day I asked him why he had a bag on his head, and he told me he was having a bad hair day.
