Posted by umar at April 20, 2007 02:59 AM

It was excatly the same over Paris it was beautiful. But what is the big light in the top left, a planet or a star ? does anyone know ?
Thanks
Seb

Thanks for this shot. The sky looked the same (along with the bright "star" - which has be Venus) from here in Budapest yesterday evening when I drove home, hanging just above the street; and this time I did notice it for some reason. It was a pleasure to see it back today :)

Posted by vsz at April 20, 2007 05:04 AM

Nice shot- I love it when the new moon is in the old moon's arms. incidentally, the other bright point to the top left is Venus, and the stars you can see below that are part of Taurus.

I didn't have my camera to hand last night- which is a pain as the moon looked like it was perched on top of the nearby houses, and whilst I was watching a plane flew 'between' the moon and venus. Would have made a great photo DOH!

Posted by Ian at April 20, 2007 05:14 AM

Last night's moon looked exactly like that over here in England as well. Of course it would, but it still seems surprising. And that is Venus looking pretty spectacular too at the moment.

Posted by James Willis at April 20, 2007 05:15 AM

yes.
i have a friend in T
with whom i spoke
she said it was beautiful
yesterday.
she was right.

Last night, in Northfield Minnesota, I sat on a hill behind my college dorm for half an hour wishing that I could take a picture of the moon. You've done it for me - and very well too.

Keep it up, your last three pictures have been amazing.

Posted by b at April 20, 2007 06:06 AM

... and that bright "star" to the upper left of the moon is actually Venus. I live in Northern Manitoba and they were even close together last night from my vantage point and I think they are getting closer together still over the next few evenings.

Posted by Clarence Fisher at April 20, 2007 07:24 AM

I take the same pic last night but not as good.

Posted by Naimi at April 20, 2007 07:55 AM

What a beautiful shot. Can you feel the spring finally upon us?

Posted by Anne-Marie at April 20, 2007 07:55 AM

It was equally impressive in Peterborough. I was out with some friends for a walk after dinner when I noticed it, and pointed it out to them all. I didn't have a camera with me, so I committed it to memory. It was a nice surprise to see it on your site this morning!

Posted by Dave.b. at April 20, 2007 08:13 AM

Great shot, ya, the moon was amazing here in MTL as well. We could also see that bright celestial start, just to its left. Any ideas what it was?

Posted by Daniel Seguin at April 20, 2007 08:13 AM

Dude the moon's not actually in Toronto...it's like...in space and stuff.

Posted by Pete at April 20, 2007 08:26 AM

I walked home with that moon last night.

Posted by Christine at April 20, 2007 08:44 AM

Funny - I was looking at exactly the same thing and thought about taking a picture, only we had slightly more colour in the sky. I can see that the moon looked great in your corner of the world, too.

Posted by peter at April 20, 2007 08:52 AM

Why did you take this shot at ISO 400?

Posted by Marc at April 20, 2007 09:10 AM

this is awesome. When can we get a wall paper version?

Posted by tee at April 20, 2007 09:19 AM

Nice photo. Love the light on the moon.

Posted by Barb at April 20, 2007 09:25 AM

Wow, you must be hurting for photos.

Posted by Brad at April 20, 2007 09:34 AM

Speechless! :|

Posted by Vahid at April 20, 2007 09:37 AM

I'm in Germany, but I noticed last night's moon too. When I saw it, it was about to set and therefore orange. The "star" to the left of the moon must be Venus. I saw it here too.

Posted by ion at April 20, 2007 09:40 AM

All I can say is WOW!!!!!!

Posted by joy at April 20, 2007 09:42 AM

cool shot.

love the moon and the stars.

Posted by Florian at April 20, 2007 09:55 AM

I was looking at that planet last night with my telescope. Do you know what planet it was?

Posted by Courtney at April 20, 2007 10:00 AM

beautiful!!

Posted by anne at April 20, 2007 10:16 AM

When the moon hit's your eye,
Like a big Pizza Pie....
That's Amore !!

Posted by Chuck at April 20, 2007 10:22 AM

I noticed that last night too. Couldn't take my eyes off it. Impressive shot.

Posted by Toby at April 20, 2007 10:22 AM

Stunning.

Is that Venus?

Posted by j0hnnyb at April 20, 2007 10:23 AM

It's about time we got another REALLY cool image. I don't think I could take this picture with the equipment that I have. To be honest I'm not sure how YOU took it! You can't see it like this with the naked eye that's for sure. At least not here in the states. Maybe it's the cleaner air up in Canada.

Posted by Chad at April 20, 2007 10:34 AM

Wow... awesome.

Posted by Kimberly Way at April 20, 2007 10:45 AM

It was outstanding, wasn't it! You really must add to your description that that's Venus - the planet - to the left of the moon!

Posted by Scott Murdoch at April 20, 2007 10:48 AM

It is tricky to get such a clear shot of the night sky. Good shot.

Posted by Michael Rawluk at April 20, 2007 10:50 AM

Last night's moon rocked. It looked a little like that from Scotland too.

Posted by Adam at April 20, 2007 11:16 AM

thats Venus right beside it, the really bright thing. i was going to take a photo but decided to take one tonight.

Posted by Andrew at April 20, 2007 11:18 AM

Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed the nice moon last night.

Posted by Etienne at April 20, 2007 11:44 AM

Stellar

Posted by Fiona at April 20, 2007 12:24 PM

funny, i was trying to get the same pic last night from ny crappy camera. did not come out quite as nice though.

great pic!

Posted by shaun at April 20, 2007 12:38 PM

I saw this exact image last night after leaving work and thought it would make a perfect picture. I'm glad someone caught it :)

Posted by Remmiz at April 20, 2007 12:38 PM

Very nice!

Posted by mel at April 20, 2007 12:46 PM

Very cool!

Posted by vg at April 20, 2007 01:43 PM

Glad you got this shot, Sam. I was driving home from TO to Ajax last night and witnessed this from the DVP. And was pissed that I didn't get home in time to shoot it. That's Venus (my fave of the planets), of course, on the upper left. Beauty shot!

Posted by Allan at April 20, 2007 02:44 PM

that's a photo?! wow, looks like an image made on the computer

Posted by Serena at April 20, 2007 03:04 PM

lovely, looks like an illustration to a lesson in astronomy

Posted by Susie at April 20, 2007 03:41 PM

I really do love outer space. nice photo.

Posted by bobby at April 20, 2007 03:44 PM

i was thinking about taking a picture of that last night. it was beautiful.

Posted by BB at April 20, 2007 04:19 PM

peaceful!

Posted by otilius at April 20, 2007 04:31 PM

Pretty sweet shot. Didn't think it would be possible to capture the darker side of the moon.

Posted by Natalie at April 20, 2007 04:55 PM

wallpaper version!

Posted by Eric Noel at April 20, 2007 05:09 PM

Wonderful photo. The detail is really great.

Posted by Laurie at April 20, 2007 09:22 PM

My girls and I (7 and 10) were admiring the moon tonight on our way home, and now, here you've posted a picture of the moon from just last night! I guess I'm just a romantic, but I love the fact that the moon is the same, no matter where on earth you see it from. It's really cool to read the comments from people all over the world who were admiring it as much as we were! It reminds me of a line from the song "The best things in life are free". It goes..."The moon belongs to everyone, it shines there for you and me..."

Posted by Heather at April 20, 2007 10:38 PM

Along with everyone else and you, I too attempted to take this shot. You capture it so much better than I do.

Posted by dennis at April 20, 2007 11:17 PM

It did look cool but any celetial shot form the city always looks lame. You can see 10 stars (or misfired pixels). In the country you wouldn't even attempt to count them in a shot like this.

Posted by Darren at April 21, 2007 01:01 AM

Sam, how did you do this? My Canon 5D gives me 30-50 monochromatic hot pixels when I open it for that length of time. I have stopped trying night pics.

Posted by Michael Willems at April 21, 2007 06:58 AM

Thank you for sharing this amazing photo and all of the photographs you continue to share!!! I am in North Dakota and so I enjoy your pictures from your part of the world...

Posted by Lisa at April 21, 2007 09:16 AM

Hello,

Just wanted to write a quick note to thank you for the great photos. I check your site regularly and always enjoy getting caught-up with my daily dose.

Regards,

Jon

I am puzzled as to why you used f/4 (wide-open on that 70-200mm f/4L) and ISO400 when you had a tripod handy. I personally would've used a much smaller aperture for greater depth of field and perhaps more sharpness (most lenses are sharpest a stop or two from wide-open). That, and ISO100 since you had a tripod to reduce noise.

Posted by KorruptioN at April 21, 2007 08:21 PM

Nicely done. This turned out great!

Posted by Alice at April 22, 2007 10:41 AM

I think it's wonderful, nothing less to say.
No matter how you take a pic, as long as you do it so well.
Charming and moving.

Posted by Irene at April 22, 2007 12:00 PM

greetings from germany, same moon over here

Posted by ahgee at April 22, 2007 02:22 PM

Stunning

Posted by Erin at April 23, 2007 11:13 AM

Phenominal image.

To KorruptioN: In practical application, the 70-200 f/4L performs just as well wide open as it does stopped down. In fact, it's one of the very best performing lenses that Canon makes, at any price. Also, DOF is immaterial when focused at infinity.

Posted by Noonan at April 25, 2007 08:10 PM

Nice shot! I took the same one a date earlier from Wisconsin. Click my name to see. ;)
