Comments: gum disposal

The first one I noticed I looked around for one of those candy stores. Figured a new one opened and this was a sly promotion for it.

Do people still chew gum?

Posted by Chris Nolan.ca at March 27, 2007 01:41 AM

If I were the type to just spit my gum out wherever I happen to be, what about this is going to encourage me to change? Alternatively, if I were one to properly dispose of my gum, what makes this little thing more attractive than a garbage can or ashtray?

Our tax dollars at work!

so glad they're doing this. gum spots on the sidewalk are a scourge.

Your photos amaze, inspire, and invoke scents, sounds and memories...fantastic

Posted by Nicole at March 27, 2007 03:20 AM

Geez, what ever happened to wrapping your used gum in a piece of paper and dropping it in the regular bin like we were taught as kids?

Or perhaps they need gum-specific bins because they plan to recycle? ;-)

What's up with the right quarter of the photo? Is the brick actually like that, or is that a strange photo seam?

Posted by boomboxnation at March 27, 2007 04:11 AM

what a brilliant idea. you Canadians are always at the forefront of good manners. i loathe the States for the exact opposite. but also, the juxtaposition of the cartoonish box on the brick makes for a dynamic shot. an oasis in this dull life of ours. cheers to you.

What a cool idea! Gum is such an easy thing to just carelessly toss on the street or sidewalk, but man, is it ever challenging to get rid after that. Stuck forever!

Posted by Daniel Seguin at March 27, 2007 07:25 AM

I take it gum litter is as much a problem as cigarette butts?

Posted by richgold at March 27, 2007 07:43 AM

There seems to be a lot of good info about them at their website:

Interesting concept.

Posted by Big Ray at March 27, 2007 08:03 AM

Oh good, they put a lock on it so people won't steal the ....wait a second!! ;)

Posted by Nate at March 27, 2007 08:27 AM

Now that is an awesome idea! That would be great if people would actually use them. No more gum on the shoe!! I hope that'll pick up here in the states too.

Posted by Nate at March 27, 2007 08:52 AM

Now that is funny! Who would think that gum chewing has become so sticky a problem that this would come about? They're surely colorful.

So King street is the center of gum chewing in Canada? Amazing!

Thanks, Sam. You made my day.

Great shot! I love the bright colors. Makes them hard to miss, I bet.

check out their site at http://www.envyrobubble.com/

Posted by Dan at March 27, 2007 10:05 AM

that's a great idea. i'd like to see some of them around my city instead of mounds of gnawed on Trident on all the trees

Posted by sutter at March 27, 2007 10:30 AM

i'm not sure if the visual pollution of splotchy sidewalks is effectively alievated by such a garish container, but do look forward to your documentation of them over the years----as part of a future "crime scene in blue" (06/12/28) perhaps. cheers, as ever.

..such a good idea!

Posted by shahin at March 27, 2007 12:05 PM

what a great idea!! we could use some in san diego downtown

Posted by joanne at March 27, 2007 12:21 PM

Great idea ;-)))) And of course a very nice shot, I like the contrast of colours (box and background).
Best wishes from Germany

This is quite neat. I haven't seen these before. I also love the way the recessed wall on the right of this image is out of focus relative to the front wall section. Neat Shot

Posted by Chris at March 27, 2007 01:12 PM

I love that there appears to be some sort of lock on the front! We clearly can't have people stealing used gum now, can we?

Posted by Dave at March 27, 2007 01:32 PM

This makes me worry. Some one might accidentally reach their hand into it because it is so darn colorful! So be careful. You may wish to put a warning sign on it aswel. :P

These just came up in the media the other day- it was a pilot project that lacked proper thought- as in- they can't find anyone who would actually take the gum to recycle it.

Think city hall is trying to come up with alternatives- like a bigger litter ticket to represent the true cost of cleaning up gum off sidewalks...

Posted by J at March 27, 2007 02:36 PM

hey sam,

a customer of mine manufactures these things. and yes, they do plan on install them through out Toronto.

i've been a huge fan of your work for a long time now and find your site a great source of inspiration. if you have a moment check out my blog. www.theblogger.net/jason%20burgess/

see ya.

Posted by Susie at March 27, 2007 03:31 PM

Thats something we need over here in New York and New Jersey! great picture.

Posted by bobby at March 27, 2007 03:34 PM

i enjoy gum spots on sidewalks. in my opinion it's not pollution.

Posted by alex at March 27, 2007 04:24 PM

THIS is what our geni-ass politicians debate, worry about, and spend megabucks on????

Are we a city of losers or what!

Posted by Mike at March 27, 2007 08:52 PM

Posted by Nadya at March 27, 2007 11:25 PM

Posted by Régis at March 28, 2007 09:28 AM

The is a bit surreal!

Posted by François Angers at March 28, 2007 09:59 AM

Such a great and original idea. Well seen and captured.

Posted by riesenriel at March 28, 2007 01:25 PM

ha! no way !

Posted by Crash at March 28, 2007 06:31 PM

It is great thing they aer doing. It would make real sense only if they treat is seprately too, for all you know this could be mixed with the rest of the garbage on the way to the dump
