I knew Waste Management was a huge company, but I never realized how huge. They are our garbage hauler too. For whatever reason that's what I noticed right away; the dumpster with the WM logo. Perhaps because today is garbage day.
Interesting shot.
Posted by Laurie at March 22, 2007 06:27 AMI think I once spent the night on one of those staircases. Love this one.
Posted by Lx at March 22, 2007 06:27 AMcool picture. happens to be one of my favourite places to eat in the city!
Posted by r at March 22, 2007 07:00 AMDamn I love those old back alleys with chaos and little details.
Posted by Camiel at March 22, 2007 10:02 AMYou have some amazing imagery. I don't remember how I found your site, but I've been watching it via RSS for a little while now. I dig your style of processing, with the higher contrast and slightly "off" but vibrant colors. This shot reminds me of some shots I got walking the back alleys of Fort Collins, CO a few weeks back. I'm a bit jealous of you 10-22mm range though. Keep it up!
Posted by J at March 22, 2007 11:53 AMI like this. There is just something interesting about the many things combined into this picture.
Posted by Abe at March 22, 2007 12:13 PMThere are others?! Good lord, where are they? I like 7West, and spend a good deal of time on their third floor. But I have become a little too familiar with their menu. For want of a night market...
Posted by Rin at March 22, 2007 12:19 PMWhat a jumbled confusion some or our housing becomes with the enforced changes, such as fire escapes. I appreciate these images of our weak side of city developement, for it presents us with a challenge. I do feel we become rather complacent about this design reality we face.
An excellent view of less than excellence.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at March 22, 2007 12:21 PMCool dumpster shot Sam! I really like the sky colours. interesting perspective also!
Posted by Ryano at March 22, 2007 12:23 PMI love 7West. It's one of the gems of the city. There should be more places like that!
Posted by Kimberly Way at March 22, 2007 12:40 PMBonjour,
Well done shot! Architecture ??..Bravo!
Here's a bit of Torontodrama regarding 7 West:
I used to work in the building just to the right of this picture, on the seventh floor -- my window looked right down onto this area. Several years ago, during lunch hour, someone pulled a gun in 7 West and the SWAT team decended upon it. They cordoned off the whole block and there were snipers and full-armoured rifle dudes everywhere, even out on the staircases you see here. Luckily, no shots were fired and everyone was safe. I continue to eat at 7 West whenever I'm in the area -- great food and nice atmosphere, and (almost) always gun free.
Sam, I've been watching your site daily for a couple of years now and never comment because I'm always in such awe -- why spoil the moment with my two cents? I hope you don't mind me breakiing that rule with this one.
All the best!
Posted by Bruce at March 22, 2007 02:43 PMA lot of detail in this photo. Nice shot.
Posted by Alice at March 22, 2007 03:02 PMWhat's going on with the flat windows on the top left hand side of the picture?
Posted by jbo_bristol at March 22, 2007 03:40 PMAMAZING! I was in TO for an internship in 1994 and found this place. For as much that has changed in that city, I'm happy to see they are still there!
Jeff
Cool pic !
g.
plus the food is killer!
Posted by Andrew Gazaneo at March 23, 2007 01:11 AMHey, I was just surfing and found this photo! The amazing thing is I used to LIVE there - 7 West - from 1978 - 1982! Do I ever have some stories to tell about that :) The fire escape certainly was different, it basically looked like the part on the left. And no third story contraption either. Paid $300 a month rent for a 3 bedroom apartment (with no heat). I have some photos of that fire escape - send me an email if you are interested in seeing one.
all the best,
Christa
Great photo. There are plenty of great 24 hour places to eat in Toronto.
I recommned the Garden at Dundas & Elizabeth.
Posted by John H. at March 25, 2007 06:07 PMWow, that staircase/patio thing really catches the eye. Very neat shot.
