Sam, I'm in the midst of an 8 month backpacking trip in Asia/Australia/New Zealand (in my 5th month now) and all along you're my only link to how Toronto looks like. Makes me miss snow! keep it up :)

Posted by Brian at February 24, 2007 06:25 AM

sam,

i love how the snow
compels one to interact.

a litmus for empathy, this art is.

very good one! my only concern are cut-off legs, but nevertheless very good picture!!!

Posted by david chabashvili at February 24, 2007 07:21 AM

Sam, this statue is of Glenn Gould.

Posted by luke at February 24, 2007 07:32 AM

This is Glenn Gould, outside the CBC building.

Posted by Ray at February 24, 2007 08:04 AM

Glen Gould, I believe.

Posted by Jack at February 24, 2007 08:11 AM

Why don't you mention that this is Glenn Gould? One of the most famous musicians that Canada has produced? Instead of saying just a statue

Posted by Alper Ozdemir at February 24, 2007 08:31 AM

Well, I would like to see his feet ;) Greetings from Germany

Posted by kwerfeldein at February 24, 2007 08:35 AM

That's the world-famous Canadian, Glenn Gould, sitting on the bench, I believe. He died in 1982, but he gains new fans every year. All other Bach pianists are still being held to his "standard," which has yet to be surpassed, in my opinion.

So nice,
I love this pictures, and i love some pictures that you take
(sorry my english is bad)

Posted by Adélaïde at February 24, 2007 09:18 AM

A top find Sam - I love mono snow shots, just a shame that the amount of snow we get here lasts for about as long as it takes to watch Futurama but there you go...

Posted by Rich at February 24, 2007 09:36 AM

i love the liquid effect, seems like the man might melt away

Posted by bee at February 24, 2007 09:55 AM

Ah! This one is very cool!

Posted by vg at February 24, 2007 10:11 AM

Wow, fantastic shot. I'm really glad somebody took a picture of that, because it's so cool! I know the spot well; and I absolutely love your title - it's very clever and ironic!

Posted by Kimberly Way at February 24, 2007 10:20 AM

it's funny but the snow cover seems to keep that statue warm rather than indicate how freezing it must have been actually. The snow also brings out some of the details nicely.

Posted by Susie at February 24, 2007 10:38 AM

Baby its cold outside! Nice catch. He looks like he's freezing.

Posted by joy at February 24, 2007 10:43 AM

Cold shot Sam. That's Canadian pianist Glenn Gould in front of the Glenn Gould Theatre.

Posted by phirleh at February 24, 2007 10:59 AM

Good contrasts!
Nice composition :)

Posted by Osiriums Ventaka at February 24, 2007 11:17 AM

There's a great balance between the details in the right side of the image and the cleanliness of the left side. It's just so well composed. He looks warm, too. Like he's wearing a snow scarf. Such a great shot.

Posted by ken at February 24, 2007 11:18 AM

excellent composition!

Posted by bobby at February 24, 2007 12:19 PM

Wow this picture is real cool. Thought that it was a real person at first, then I read the caption. Haha

Posted by Samir at February 24, 2007 12:22 PM

Excellente photo!

Posted by Bruno at February 24, 2007 12:45 PM

This one is fantastic.

Posted by Bukowski at February 24, 2007 01:11 PM

One of my favourite outside sculptures -- of Glenn Gould. I've often seen tourists being photographed while sitting with him. There is a world wide fan club that comes to Toronto every year on the anniversary of his death.

Posted by Henry at February 24, 2007 01:17 PM

This is probably my most favorite picture that I have ever seen on this website.

Posted by Caleb at February 24, 2007 01:46 PM

Ah! this scared me! I thought it was a real person when I first looked at it! Now that I have taken a second look... I really like the sense of sadness it has.

Posted by celeste. at February 24, 2007 02:17 PM

So I'm concluding that the darkness of some images lately really is intentful.

In this case it is striking, though I'd like to see the face a bit better.

Good catch!

Posted by Hugh Petrie at February 24, 2007 02:58 PM

THAT one is incredible. Love the textures.

Posted by richgold at February 24, 2007 03:23 PM

the white is really nice

Posted by Andrew at February 24, 2007 03:23 PM

What a super capture. Gould would have been less than thrilled to have cold hands. As I recall, he always wore mittens.

Posted by john at February 24, 2007 06:03 PM

w0w!! sn0w!!!

congratulations

Posted by aletaka at February 24, 2007 06:22 PM

what a wonderful pic!

Posted by ksklein at February 24, 2007 08:14 PM

That is a very good shot! I love the way the snow sits on the sculpture; almost like a cloak or a blanket.

Posted by gary at February 24, 2007 09:58 PM

Great picture, Glenn Gould, great pianist.

Snow fits well on the statue.

Posted by JF at February 24, 2007 11:19 PM

Sorry to be picky, but there are two n's in Glenn, Sam!

I adore this sculpture in any season - he is a wonderful bench companion to sit with. Thanks for photographing and sharing!

Posted by Kathy at February 25, 2007 12:30 AM

سم، اين خيلي قشنگه

Posted by Soheila at February 25, 2007 12:40 AM

yes, Sam, this is a very attractive object to shoot.

I shot him in 2004 too, on another season, but still the statue was impressive as much.

:) for those who regrets about his feet cut I give here the link to my shot named 'feeling lonely' or 'no warmth left'

Well observed and the snow has positioned itself to perfection.

Posted by Mike at February 25, 2007 10:39 AM

Oh, how wild!

Posted by l-mia at February 26, 2007 02:00 AM

Talk about "the idea of North!"

Posted by rootlesscosmo at February 26, 2007 11:18 PM

the idea of north
keeps him warm
as the scarf and mittens
never did --
do you think he knew
at the time
he would be wearing them
forever?
he was right to wear them
for the snowstorms
of forever.
i dream he will awake
on some summer day
look up at the sun
and play a goldberg variation
on the building behind him;
stretch up his arms,
take off his mitts
first,
then everything else,
and dance naked and laughing
all the way from toronto's
idea of south --
up, up yonge street
music pouring from his fingertips
as he waves them ecstatically
and sways his head, humming,
followed by hundreds, then thousands
of dancing, laughing
and often naked
merchants, stockbrokers
and other northerners
free at last
of the burden of snow
that makes us who we are
