Comments: burnt pier and seagull

ominous.

Beautiful image. The colors and silhouettes, the hints of the sun's rays, the contrast in the water, the whole package. The gull's in a nice spot, too.

Posted by MarkDM at January 23, 2007 12:58 AM

LOVE the seagull's silhouette

Posted by Serena at January 23, 2007 01:02 AM

Absolutely gorgeous picture!

Posted by Kalikea at January 23, 2007 01:07 AM

wonderful...

The vertical position was a good choice and the seagull adds movement and richness to the composition. Sometimes it's worth the wait to process some photos. Excellent shot! :-)

Being born and bred just down the coast from Brighton, I can't stand the place. But this is a lovely, lovely shot. Been looking at DDOI every day for the last 18 months and this is one of your best, IMHO.

"end of the world" mood. The lightning and contrast are really good !

Posted by Deny at January 23, 2007 03:55 AM

Amazing contrast and lighting...very well done...I am just not sure about the left lower corner, it still works but looks like you have lost some data and whites are quite washed out!?

Posted by nariman at January 23, 2007 04:04 AM

Really nice photo.

Love the colours Sam. The sky looks so surreal, circular polarizer? Keep it up WVS.

WWWOOOOOOOOFFFFF!!!
this is SUPER!
i likr it so much!

Posted by Ali at January 23, 2007 05:07 AM

A beautiful photo by itself, but even better is this: the very second I opened the image in my RSS reader, a seagull started crowing outside. It must have come from the river, which is about a mile away. Made the image even more impressing.

that bird is coming to get ya! Very nice texture of the water surface.. a haunting image for sure

As a Canadian in England, you do me proud! I love Brighton, and it's ever so famous pier, I'm there every weekend, although it's much better in the summer. Great picture!

Posted by D at January 23, 2007 06:19 AM

What a beautiful photo. I stood on that beach on the weekend of a Who convention in September 2003. I was surprised that the beach was all rocks and no sand.

This composition is really wonderful. There is a lot going on and it all works together very nicely.

Posted by Laurie at January 23, 2007 08:13 AM

Great composition, especially the two seagulls.

Any chance of an A4 printable copy of this for for my home - pleeeeeeeeze??

Keep it up!

BTW, the only thing the West Pier is famous for is for what it says about Brighton & Hove's attitude to it's heritage, given that the pier has been left to rot for decades and when plans were announced to restore it, nothing happened except lots of bickering between the planners and the local council, then arsonists firebombed it and winter weather did the rest.

Very nice. I like the toning.

I am puzzled by the comment, ".. finally got around to processing ..." as though it were film you shot. Surely you don't photoshop everything.

Certainly dramatic. Sad subject and not too interesting.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at January 23, 2007 09:16 AM

At first glance this picture seems gloomy but slowly as you scroll down and the sky gets brighter you can see that overall it's more hopeful than dismal. I love the grey-blue tones. Great job as always :)

Posted by Khadeeja at January 23, 2007 09:56 AM

Um, wow this is gorgeous.

I'm glad you got around to it.

Your 15-month-old photos that you finally get around to processing, are the ones the rest of us would rush home and process, and publish immediately!
This is spectacular....

There are some great tones and shadows here. I especially like the rays of sunlight through the clouds. Fantastic composition as well.

Awesome shot Sam, great composition and colors. Did you filter that one? dark blue probably? Cheers.

How do you do it ?
We are still with wonder !
I saw the pier too, but not as you see it! http://www.flickr.com/photos/kinveredge/129313189/in/set-72057594108266384/

Absolutely fabulous!
I love how you always pay attention to the symmetry in pictures where it is appropriate. It usually involves still objects but this one is just fantastic.

To the Photographer,

This picture is one of the lovelist I have seen of the pier, Brighton was my home for a magical summer three years ago and sometimes it haunts my dreams. The way the giant flocks of birds would dance in silant dark clouds over the burned pier at dusk, the way the rays of afternoon sun would hit the waves just so casting a sparkling path along the water. I remember swimming out near the pier one day with a friend. Looking out into the endless ocean with the sun on the horizon and my friend told me then to keep my gaze out to sea because it was my future. Some moments will live forever, thank you for bringing this one back.

Sincerely,

Star C. Spider

Just amazing!
I was totally happy with the two birds, which I think are perfectly and smartly captured and then I scrolled down, and kept scrolling and it got better and better.
