Stunning! I've only commented a few times, but I visit at least once a day, and this one is.. I love it. It's so dark and grim. apocalyptic even, with all sorts of religious context. Wonderful!
Posted by rob at January 18, 2007 02:31 AMHrmm... I know the Vatican City is inside of Italy, but it's not officially a part of it, is it? I always thought it was its own country (the world's smallest, in fact). Meh... Either way, amazing shot as usual. Did the Pope speak that day?
Posted by Jessyel Ty Gonzalez at January 18, 2007 02:55 AMhow did you get these colors? did you "greyscale" the lower part of the image? amazing!
Posted by julius at January 18, 2007 03:09 AMquite alot of chair, innit?
i like the grayish proportion.
Is it necessary to mention all of ur pic s r imppressive?!
Posted by Homa at January 18, 2007 03:48 AMI really like the angle you shot this at - makes the chairs seem to go on forever. Who would have though plain grey chairs could be part of such a beautiful picture!
Posted by Khadeeja at January 18, 2007 07:25 AMWow, impressive shot... Grey's the colour!
Posted by Djiwôm at January 18, 2007 07:40 AMThats alot of chairs! Love the composition and tones in the sky.
Posted by Craig at January 18, 2007 07:45 AMnice photo!
but vatican is not italy
it is an independent country
woahhhh, spectacular!
Posted by Shen at January 18, 2007 07:54 AMVery good perspective and composition.
beautiful colors!
Man, I'm in love with your exposures. Somehow, they have this film look to it which I am trying hard to achieve on my digital shots. Really enjoyed your Italy series. Cheers!
Posted by Noor Hazmee at January 18, 2007 08:12 AMImpressive...the angle is perfect.
Posted by Laurie at January 18, 2007 08:24 AMI like the way the chairs are set up in such nice straight rows. The contrast of the dark sky against the light colored building is nice. Great job.
Posted by Alice at January 18, 2007 08:45 AMVery intersting. Were those chairs and the foreground desaturated, or are these the actual colors?
Posted by Myrddin at January 18, 2007 09:03 AMReminds me of my exam rooms in Waterloo. Very nice photo
Posted by Krishna at January 18, 2007 09:08 AMhey!here is taiwan ,
i saw your website on the magzine
how many chairs are there in the picture??^^
That's a lot of chairs! Do you know what kind of event was going on? Very clean shot, of course.
Posted by Nate at January 18, 2007 09:35 AMWhat a job that must be, placing all those chairs, then taking them all back to storage till the next event.
All this to see and hear a man who claims to be closer to God than any other man. This while the Testament of Christ says you need no intervenor between you and God. You can talk to God directly without the Pope's so-called superior contact.
Such is the big business and mind control of "faith".
God is great! Religion is questionable.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at January 18, 2007 09:42 AMGreat pic. I like how ominous (sp?) the sky is over Rome, but how it gets brighter and nicer over the Vatican.
Posted by Mings at January 18, 2007 11:04 AMExcellent shot, Sam; absolutely superb composition
At one time I would have said your perception of the compositional possibilities are amazing; but I'm just not amazed anymore. You get it right so regularly that we have come to expect nothing less on DDoI.
Well done, Sam.
wow, that's a lot of chairs...great shot.
Posted by mel at January 18, 2007 12:42 PMThe synergy on the web is incredible sometimes. I was in Rome several months ago and took a similar picture: compare at www.chromalark.com/2006/07/after_the_pope.html
I'm big fan of DDOI. Keep up the good work!
Posted by maiken at January 18, 2007 02:17 PMEmpty chairs sitting on the plaza square has a very surreal look. It's as if the chairs are listening to a sermon.
Posted by PlasticTV at January 18, 2007 05:53 PMcool color, almost looks desaturated in post processing. very nice.
Posted by Andrew at January 18, 2007 06:02 PMHi Sam,
The Vatican City is in fact in Italy.
It is properly, Vatican City, Italy -- and it is known as the smallest independent soverign state. Its popular because it is comparitavely the same size as Central Park.. but my point is, you had it right the first time - Vatican City, Italy.
An improper statement would be Vatican City, Rome
Posted by Stefanie at January 18, 2007 06:53 PMI wish you had more pictures of Iran...
Posted by Sara at January 18, 2007 09:02 PMit has a very eerie feel to it and even a twinge of danger. I like it!
Posted by lisa at January 18, 2007 10:25 PMInteresting capture; well done!
Posted by Elinor at January 19, 2007 12:06 AMI like the juxtaposition of the stunning, old world architecture with the ordinary blandness of the uninspiring plastic chairs. It's almost humorous.
Posted by Heather at January 19, 2007 06:35 PMWOW!!!
Posted by Calogero at January 19, 2007 10:05 PMImpressive
Posted by Alexandru at January 20, 2007 07:36 AMendless rows... love it!
Posted by Daniel at January 20, 2007 12:00 PMNice shot, Sam. The symmetry is great.
Posted by Abe at January 20, 2007 12:17 PMThe hotness. Great shot.
Posted by Tracy at January 21, 2007 01:48 PMMust have been a Wednesday, the pope speaks on Wednesday mornings - The best day to go to the Vatican Museums - everyone else is outside!!
