Comments: countdown to wii

So, you missed the fun at the PS3 launch. Some guy smashed his PS3 as he walked out of Best Buy and has the footage on his site. You have captured a sad commentary on the priorities of our society. On the positive side, they now know how the homeless feel sleeping outside in the winter.

Never realised this was such an obsessive hobby.

Being a non-game playing person, (well - Freecell?) I find these line ups somewhat absurd. But to each his own.

Of course, there's not much of this societies offerings for which I'd line up all night in the cold or maybe even a warm night.

Someone paying you for this? I hope so.

I'm jealous... but then again, I got to sleep in a bed last night.

I do own quite a few consoles, but I would never spend the night (in November) in front of a store to be one of the first to buy one. I also read about people standing in line to buy the PS3 were robbed! :-( But great series of images though!

Fantastic images.

So did you get a Wii? It's amazing to what peaple are willing to do just to be one of the first to get a game console.

Posted by Bedir26 at November 19, 2006 09:23 AM

your photos are full of life!

Posted by lynn at November 19, 2006 09:26 AM

sam, i really like this type of series. especially when you have people looking into the camera. you don't do that too often.

Posted by jesse at November 19, 2006 09:49 AM

simply amazing what people will do to get what they want.

Posted by bobby at November 19, 2006 10:29 AM

Look these geeks, can't wait few days to order the hardware somewhere else online... and maybe cheaper.

Posted by Michael at November 19, 2006 10:36 AM

Haha, nice to see how popular it is there! My boyfriend's also a great fan and can't wait for it. Unfortunately he has to wait almost a month :P We're walking behind here haha. Although, great picture again.

It's nuts what people will do for these things. There has been a lot of violence including at least on shooting in the pursuit of the new Playstation. I wouldn't bother, unless they plan on selling it on Ebay for gazzilions mre that it's worth, but, personally I would wait a few months and then they'll be so many and the price will likely drop as well.

It did provide some intereasting photo-ops though.

YES, PLAYSTATION 3 did not go on sale until Friday Morning but lines here in Virginia Beach started to form WED night!!! and it rained all night.... Unfortunately at one of the stores here there was a shooting...

Posted by CHRISSY at November 19, 2006 12:51 PM

So that's what they were waiting for...

Posted by Natalie at November 19, 2006 01:25 PM

viva PS3

Posted by kolboree at November 19, 2006 01:48 PM

Sam, how do you get your night pictures to turn out so well? That probably sounds like a dumb question, but do you use a tripod or is there another way?

Posted by TRR at November 19, 2006 02:27 PM

Wouldn't it be funny if that Bestbuy only had 10 systems.

Posted by Angry Buddha at November 19, 2006 03:38 PM

Great mood in this shots. Excellent capture of the waiting people. Amazing what people do ;-)

Posted by Ries at November 19, 2006 05:17 PM

oh my GOSH, i can't believe that. what if people put that much determination into something worthwhile... flip.

Posted by andrea at November 19, 2006 06:54 PM

I passed by the aftermath of this line the next day. It was probably the messiest sidewalk I've ever encountered and probably wouldve made for a cool before and after shot.

Posted by Darren at November 19, 2006 09:16 PM

how sad. how pathetic.
i check your pictures daily and am impressed often, but i'm surprised you would bother to photograph this. oh well.
how meaningless must life be nowadays. and how good marketing has become.
focus on consumption, forget reality.

i know, i know, i sound overly judgemental and up on a high horse,
but is there really a good argument in existence for justifying this kind of time-wasting behaviour? i mean, really?

anywho, i guess you're excuse could be that it's only a block from where you live anyway...
keep shooting,
and try to focus more on beauty than stupidity...
ciao

...and another thing ( : ) )
i wonder how many in this line 'braved the cold' to vote last week....
geez....

Posted by jamie at November 19, 2006 10:05 PM

Sometimes I feel that i am obsessed with photography and my photoblog but looking at these guys I feel I am fine.

Posted by navin at November 20, 2006 12:52 AM

really, this is just to pathetic. If you think about it its just people who are so materialistic that they actually need to buy wii when most expensive and most sought for.
madness i tell you :P

Posted by Noa at November 20, 2006 12:05 PM

you weren;t one of these people, were you?

Posted by Andrew at November 20, 2006 04:28 PM

Sam,

I have never seen you capture the essence of 'nerd', so well. It is wonderful that they have found such a community with each other as they talk about nerdy things. Beautiful and much less violent than the nerds in the US.

Posted by Doug at November 20, 2006 04:50 PM

Oh wow! That's actually the first shot of the new Ryerson Business building that I've seen. It looks amazing!! Great shots as always Sam

Posted by fragileheart at November 20, 2006 06:50 PM

How come you blocked out the university sign in the last picture?

Posted by KhanH at November 21, 2006 04:24 PM

I love your mind until to the end of the world! ;)
