Sad.....

Hmmmm. I don't know what to make of my own reaction. When I first saw the picture, I thought it was in Toronto.

I hope you paid him to take his picture...or maybe you didn't and that's why he looks so angry!

Posted by MARK at November 10, 2006 07:51 AM

... so what is said about dogs and their owners resembling one another is true...

Posted by lydia at November 10, 2006 07:51 AM

great pic, as usual!!

poor guy, wonder his mom would think if she saw him like this :(

Posted by sami at November 10, 2006 07:58 AM

yo i think this is played. not only do i think its exploitive, its a poormans attempt at photojournalism. i hate photos of homeless people, i don't understand why people think they're good photos opportunities. its like your photographing them just because they are there.

your a good photographer, but this isn't a good picture or good protocol.

Nice observation. He looks patience full. Love the sattisfied dog and the pink bike.

So Italy has street people with dogs too. I think this is the first time I've seen such an indication. Seems to be a world wide problem.

It is a hard space to rise out of from what I've seen about me. Like being stuck in quicksand.

Awesome photo. Someone should tell this guy that its never a good idea to beg with a nice watch on your wrist, makes you less convincing.

Posted by Geoff at November 10, 2006 10:42 AM

I completely agree with Dirk Sam. I think you suck as a picture taking guy. I know for a fact that you planted this homeless guy and took his picture just to take a picture that will make people cry. Maybe next time you can take a picture of a clown who's looking at a crying unicorn shooting children in outer space! Shame on you Sam. Shame on you.

p.s. I wish this picture was scratch and sniff, because I think it would smell like a mixture of popcorn and hot iron.

Poverty knows no borders. However that watch and rather decent pack makes me wonder. Not all "beggars" are that bad off. I've heard "stories" of some making a tidy living and it's hard work, which also makes me wonder why they would do so. Although I cannot say for other countries but here in the USA the unemployment rate is under 5%, I think it was 4.7% at last count, so jobs are out there, and many jobs are available for illegals who wouldn't even be counted in the stats so it would be my guess that unemployment is even lower if that were taken into account, since the illegal immigrants are virtually 100% employed.

I am always amazed when I see a homeless person with a pet. Who eats first?

This photo is similar to the one taken on May 22 last year. That picture stayed in my head for weeks.

Sam, I have followed your photoblog for several months with great interest and admiration, but haven't posted a comment before. In my opinion, this is a powerful image, with strong composition and provocative content. I am not surprised that the content raised some controversy. Many, if not most, of us with the wherewithal to browse this site probably feel some discomfort in the presence of beggars. Is this reflected in the emotions we experience looking at the picture? Is photographing a beggar exploiting him or her? Should beggars and other unfortunates be off limits to our lenses? I do not have answers, but I view the picture with the assumption that you treated the person with respect and with concern for his dignity. The picture moves me, and has broken my silence.

I don't get it. I came here to see a pic of Toronto today. I'm new to looking at city daily photos, so maybe I am just lost.

I don't think there is any exploitation here. I actually don't believe anyone on earth ever made a critical remark about anyone else on earth that wasn't really about the critic rather than the criticized.

as noted by others, nice watch, i mean two nice watches. HE'S A FAKE!! i once sat in a coffee shop and watched an agressive pan handler make about 10 bucks in 15 minutes, everyone was giving him cash because he was in their face and wouldnt leave em alone until they gave him something. therefore, not only is this guy a fake hobo, he also sucks at pan handling. as others mentioned, i agree that this is weak as he lives in a country where he could find a job if he tried.

Great shot of a sad looking man and an equally sad looking dog. I don’t get this idea that he is “fake” just because he is wearing a watch which I can’t even tell if it is good or even works from this distance—and if does work and is worth a buck to two so what!

Posted by mykodachrome at November 11, 2006 01:07 AM

Maybe he's a 'fake' beggar, maybe he's not......whatever his story is, it's put a haunted, unbearably sad look in his eyes. Whether physically or spiritually, he's without a home. I'm glad he has a canine companion.

Great shot, Sam! Thanks for sharing.
