Comments: look up there

Whoa, nice crop. Love the hand pointing action.

Du you think he's pointing at the dove sitting on Marias head?
Very nice picture!

Great shot ... :x
tfs :)

Because this photo is WAY too big for my monitor, I had no idea of scale as I scrolled down, so it looked like a normal size doorway with a fancy arch. It was only when the people appeared that I realised just how large this doorway must be!

Posted by Neil at November 9, 2006 04:25 AM

Another great shot that shows the huge scale of the door and arch, in relation to the couple at the bottom.

Surprise, surprise... wonderful shot... seems to be heavily zoomed

Perfect.

I'm a close follower of your portfolio here and frequently save some of my favorites on my computer. You have a sophisticated eye and a gorgeous aesthetic. And in my judgment, this is the best piece you've ever posted here. I adore it. And I adore the story it tells.

Just perfect.

Perfect title for this one. The fact I had to scroll to see the couple makes it better. It had me scrolling back and forward forcing me to explore all the detail.

preuve que l'on est bien peu de chose...

massive vertical...i love it!

Posted by jesse at November 9, 2006 09:39 AM

Normally I don't like to have to scroll to see the whole image. This one, however, works perfectly as three separate images (at least on my screen). First, the beautiful arch detail, with the bird sitting on Mary's head. Next comes that amazing door. And finally, a little comic relief as the meaning behind the title is revealed. Great little vignette.

And, of course, amazing image as always.

I usually crop my photoblog images to avoid this. But this one seems to work. We start at the pinnacle of the arch and move down to find someone seemingly pointing back to the arch. It made me scroll up and have a second look.

It's fantastic; I love the way the size of the people allow you to feel the magnificence of the door and architecture. Now I think I want to get an extra large monitor, just to view your (often very tall) photos all at once!

One of your best!!!

Love the "bigness" of this photo. Really good :D

In fact, a lot of couples to discover. Great (in all meanings of the word) shot and crop!

romantic shot!
I love it ...

I love this photograph, especially the amazingly sharp and gorgeous architectural bits.

I understand cropping is important but why does it seemed to get mentioned over & over by commenters? I would think most everyone here appreciates judicious/artistic cropping.

Your awesome work just gets better!

If I ever have a child, I will name him/her Look Up There, in honour of this beautiful photo. Duomo arigato.

Posted by Baxter at November 9, 2006 04:06 PM

Ok I guess this one was a wide angle shot that you cropped out? You did say handheld so that's all I can imagine. Wonderfull job though Sam. You'r camera would be nothing without your mind.

Posted by Nate at November 9, 2006 05:43 PM

Hey, the Duomo is simply an amazing work of art and architecture from michelangelo, and your pictures point that out wonderfully. I've been there in the summer as well, I might have seen you ;) The heat was absolutely killing, even for the locals it was extreme! but it was worth it!

Quite an amazing, tight frame so close up. Very interesting!

Posted by Abe at November 9, 2006 10:44 PM

Beautiful capture. The scroll down makes this shot even better, the door is amazing.

Posted by Ries at November 10, 2006 02:55 AM

Great choice of title. I like that I realy had no idea why it was called that until I scrolled down to the bottom.

Posted by David at November 10, 2006 08:50 AM

This is certainly an exceptional shot! I can only echo the praise of previous posters. I wish I had a larger display to fit it in. Not only is it a magnificent door but the seemingly animated touch of human life at the bottom of the photo is the icing on the cake for this scene. The canon 350D has done a good job of it too - maybe it had good glass? Thanks for the experience of enjoying this image.
