i really wish you hadnt spun the doll around in the first one i think if it had been still it woulda been a bit more creepy depending on where it was hanging from on the string or sumthing like that i think you get what i mean...anyway yeah
Posted by mike at November 1, 2006 01:06 AMHappy Halloween too!
Posted by Klimin Andrew at November 1, 2006 01:47 AMIndeed very dark and scary
Posted by navin harish at November 1, 2006 02:22 AMit is scary!! especially the one showing its feet with dirt on..disturbing..like a movie poster of some horror flick
Posted by ye at November 1, 2006 03:07 AMeeee... that's really creepy!!!
the feet look almost real!
They're freaky... especially when they make squeaky noise and hunt you in your dream.
Posted by Ninjaess at November 1, 2006 03:46 AMGreat shots, I love these. There is something really unsettling about these images.
Posted by Andy L at November 1, 2006 04:16 AMVery creepy pair of images! Good work Sam.
Posted by Craig Wilson at November 1, 2006 06:34 AMOh this is breaking my heart. These images are very powerful, and emotional.
Happy Birthday to your sister.
Posted by Laurie at November 1, 2006 06:50 AMTHe bottom shot reminds me of Gladiator ;)
Posted by David Goering at November 1, 2006 06:54 AMNow that's a little unusual. A doll attached to a ceiling in an abandoned building? Hummmm... Something scary is happening here. :-)
Happy Birthday to your sister!
Posted by nferreira at November 1, 2006 07:02 AMit is really scary, freaks me out a bit.
Posted by m a r i n u s at November 1, 2006 07:05 AMthese are great shots, hope you have a good one for tomorrows post (my birthday tomorrow!) ;)
amazing work!
Posted by Cameron Gray at November 1, 2006 07:40 AMIt's interesting how abandoned things and places evoke such a eerie, negative feeling when in fact, objects like this doll likely were the focus of some pretty happy (or at least calming) moments for a kid having to stay there.
Wonderful photographs!
I've got to say these psych ward photos creep me out.
Great shots as always!

Posted by Dennis at November 1, 2006 09:13 AMto be honest im not a big fan of your whitby's work, i prefer your street and landscape photography. but afterall it is your site.
Posted by jesse warren at November 1, 2006 09:42 AMIncredible! Bizarre if not scary. You certainly found some deeply meaningful images in that former hospital.
May the Saints be kind to you and your wife.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at November 1, 2006 09:55 AMThese are indeed like images from nightmares. Their subject matter is so strong that I almost forget these are composed and rendered images. You've done an excellent job (as usual). The second image, in particular, is a great b&w photograph -- you've used contrast, focus and a slight vignetting to great effect.
Posted by Paul at November 1, 2006 10:54 AMdid someone go to that building and vandalize it? or did it just end up like that when it was abandoned?
great shots though, especially for halloween!
I was always afraid of the "Chuckie" movies when I was a kid and this just brought back a lot of the scary memories!!
A very happy birthday to your sister :)
Posted by Khadeeja at November 1, 2006 12:37 PMVery dark...but I like it!
very disturbing shot...spoooky
Posted by Kiana at November 1, 2006 01:01 PMThat scares the crap out of me.
Posted by TRob at November 1, 2006 01:11 PMFantastic pictures, I really like the motion in the first one, and the grain in the second. Great job!
Posted by Oliver at November 1, 2006 03:12 PMJust plain creepy. Especially the second shot.
Posted by Ben Kennedy at November 1, 2006 04:30 PMHi Sam,
Why was this psych ward abandoned? Do you know when the hospital was built?
Its all very sad. Perhaps it was abandoned in a fire? that could be why some belongings are still there?
I love how much these shots scare me.
Stefanie
You're not wrong about it being creepy. The b&w doesn't help it any.
Good photo though.
Posted by Chris Pittock at November 1, 2006 05:19 PMReminds me of Saw. There's an abandoned psych hospital in my neighborhood. I keep wanting to go during the day to get some photography, but I don't want to go alone (because it has a bad reputation for sketchy individuals) and my friends only want to go at night to scare themselves.
Posted by Isaac at November 1, 2006 06:53 PMThere is a Chucky living in everyone of us. Some of us try very hard to entrap him for our whole live. Someday, when you least expect it, it will escape and haunt us, make us feel disoriented, leaving us with a body emasculated.
Posted by Boreo at November 1, 2006 11:30 PMvery beautiful
Posted by دوزاری دات کام at November 1, 2006 11:47 PM:-)) Cool set!
Posted by Kris [PiXistenZ] at November 2, 2006 02:46 AMGreat pair of images. I love the dirty feet and the peeling paint. Both images would have very different vibes without them.
Posted by sonofwalrus at November 2, 2006 05:49 AMGreat shots, very sinister.
Posted by Jon at November 3, 2006 05:11 PMone wonders...who came first... the dolls or the children? With dolls like that it's not surprising the place was abandoned...
