Quite an uncompable place to be reading a book! :-) But a great capture.

It was a beautiful day yesterday. I had gone down to B&H Photo on 34th to buy a new camera (you MUST go there if you haven't ever done it, you won't be sorry). It was closed for some reason and I came very close to going up to Central Park for a stroll before heading home. Who knows?... you might have taken MY picture!

This is a wonderful shot! I love the composition, the toning and last but not the least the simplicity.

amazing beautiful: simple things ~ somehow, you capture them; amazingly consistent impressions without affecting the amazement. if i could i would ~ support you in photographing so many places ... we need a magic bicycle for you sam.

So, enjoying another bite of the Big Apple, eh?

I like the incongruity of the business suited reader on all the rock.

Nice simple photo! I really like that you made it black and white, it makes the cliff look rough.

Posted by Lars Gundersen at October 16, 2006 08:27 AM

Very nice, it looks like hes sitting on some rapids!

Love this one. B&W works well here, great composition, and it evokes the feeling so well. I need to do what this guy is doing!

Posted by Kent Blumberg at October 16, 2006 11:50 AM

As usual. An Interesting photo.

Great shot, lovely blak & white. Totally different picture then you usually make!

Wonderful B&W shot! Beautiful structure of the rock.

very tarkovsky-ish!

Love the gritty detail, excellent shot.

Superb composition. The desaturation just suits this perfectly. I think we all need to do more of this sometime.

Posted by Gavin at October 16, 2006 05:13 PM

Its always good to take a moment out of a busy day to appreciate a good book.

At first glance I thought this photo was pretty horrible. It looked way blown out and super contrasted. Then I looked at the gradient bar at the top of your site and realize that my laptop monitor needed some serious re-calibration.

Now this (and everything else) looks like a wonderful photo! So I (and my laptop) thank you for this post :)

I never realised Central Park had big rocks!

Wow!His left leg is spectacularly long. Is he related to a spider crab?

Posted by Steve at October 16, 2006 07:31 PM

I like this. Its a different style then you usually see here at ddoi.

Posted by Andrew at October 16, 2006 08:05 PM

the guy in the picture looks very much like jon stewart. at least the hair...

Posted by siavash at October 16, 2006 10:10 PM

This is great...but that does not look like a comfortable place to curl up with a good book.

Posted by Laurie at October 16, 2006 11:31 PM

facinating composition/contrast/tone/everything!

Posted by Ali at October 17, 2006 12:52 AM

JENUINE SHOT!!!

Posted by susan at October 17, 2006 02:50 AM

More power to the guy for being able to lounge on such a hard surface long enough to get through ANY number of pages in a book!!! Must be cushioning his bum w/something....I like how capturing the gentleman on the rocky surface lends a certain stillness and depth to him that wouldn't have been present had he been in the midst of grass or under a tree...

Posted by stillatello at October 18, 2006 12:37 PM

Ha! Great framing. Nice tones with the B&W. And he's quite a character...
But it really doesn't look like the most comfortable place to read! But that only adds to the piece. ; )

this photo made me stop in my traks. everything about it is just the way it should be... come to think of it, it reminds me of that beautiful b/w portrait of james dean, "bulevard of broken dreams".. it really does.
fantastic shot!
