Comments: nuit blanche

why are you shooting with a 10D now? do you plan to upgrade from the 400D anytime soon? nice pics...

What great atmosphere! The top one is my favourite, I think the bottom one could have done with a tighter crop on the lights/rain/subject - but once again you continue to impress.

Posted by seriocomic at October 2, 2006 04:45 AM

these are great as usual. I especially love the first image, very atmospheric.

Posted by Andy L at October 2, 2006 05:18 AM

the fog surely makes for a moody shot. You can sense the anticaption of the crowd as well as feel the dampness of the air.nice capture of available light too.

Posted by ct at October 2, 2006 06:39 AM

Six successful one to collect of the moments much evocative of the nuit blanche

Posted by Fabio at October 2, 2006 06:47 AM

I love the first image. I'll say it is one of your best and one of the nicest image I have seen lately

Posted by navin harish at October 2, 2006 06:56 AM

What the hell is a "fog installation"? And don't tell me it's Art. What a world we live in now.

Posted by Jack at October 2, 2006 07:36 AM

Fantastic series. I love these.

Posted by Laurie at October 2, 2006 08:44 AM

the lighting for the fog pictures are perfect. well done.

Posted by Kelvin Chan at October 2, 2006 09:02 AM

Love the ambience of the first shot. Nice.

Looks like zombies!!

Posted by Andy@PhotoChron at October 2, 2006 10:06 AM

Amazing Shots! I'm truly astonished by your skills Sam!

Posted by Leo at October 2, 2006 10:17 AM

I'm inclined towards Jack's view that this isn't art - whatever it is. Performance of some sort. A fog machine for Philosopher's walk. Amazing!

Getting photos of such is a challenge. I like the top one for its mood and particular arangement.

I'm sure everyone had fun.

Totally cool. I love that sepia effect

Posted by cathy at October 2, 2006 11:56 AM

great capture Sam! i love the 3rd one

Posted by andy at October 2, 2006 12:10 PM

Wow, those first two shots are incredible!! The tones from the fog are very nice and soft. Definitely captured a mood there.
Almost has a zombie type feel to it (from one perspective)
"Send more police "

The third shot is very nice too. I like how the rain is exposed in only a part of the image from the lighting.

Posted by Richard Houtby at October 2, 2006 12:16 PM

I thought I'd be the only one to think that the people in the first two shots look like zombies! But Andy beat me to it.

Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't a "performance" also be considered a form of art? I don't even think you can define the word...

(Great job Sam!)

The fog sculpture was a lovely installation of art within the magic that was Toronto's Nuit Blanche........a night of wonderment, contemplation, serendipity and fun. I'm so glad you captured the fog exactly how we experienced it, Sam! Beautiful photos - thanks for being out there!

Posted by Kathy at October 2, 2006 12:50 PM

Excellent atmosphere, love these shots!

Posted by Craig Wilson at October 2, 2006 01:29 PM

Really cool, love the first fog picture, looks like something out of Victorian England.

Posted by Steve W at October 2, 2006 01:42 PM

My favorite is the third one. Really great dynamic and tension! And fitting lights...

Posted by Thomas at October 2, 2006 02:23 PM

Amazing photos ! Love the last one with the rain drops in the spotlight.

Posted by Martin at October 2, 2006 02:52 PM

wow sam i really like all three the first one was a very calm kindo of night time effect in a nice part of downtown kinda feeling like idk maybe like someowhere everyone is hanging out after a concert or somthing ya know? and the second one the first thing that came to mind was the word deliverance i just seem like this crowd is just being pulled toward this light and how the rays go through the fog and its like it lamp has blinders on and is just pointed directly at the crowd i love it and the thrid i thought of sin city how like in the comics how you se that effect all the time of the black and white effect and then you can only see the rain inm one part becuase theres a light shining i like all three very cool stuff sam

Posted by mike at October 2, 2006 03:13 PM

i love the first shot...how did you get such good definition in the shot given it was so dark?

Posted by nev at October 2, 2006 03:57 PM

I was there! What a great installation; what a great night. Hooray for Toronto. I think I saw you at Philosopher's Walk with your tripod, Sam! I have been enjoying your web site for over a year but this is my first post. Thanks for sharing your talent with all of us.

Posted by Sara at October 2, 2006 04:50 PM

I like the first shot best.. it looks like taken from one of Charles Dickens novels

Posted by Susie at October 2, 2006 05:19 PM

Long time viewer, first time poster. I'm crazy about the first photograph (fog and people). It looks like a painting more than a photo. Something about it is drawing me; I wish I could put my finger on what it was. I love the series. Thanks for sharing it.

Posted by Cathy at October 2, 2006 05:34 PM

YES nuit blanche was awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed that fog installation too...but i went at 5:30am when there were considerably fewer people :) Your pictures turned out much nicer than mine though. The first one is awesome.

Posted by josie at October 2, 2006 05:58 PM

The fog was one of my favorite ones. We tangoed in the fog and we were having a lot of fun until we sliped in the mod- then it became even more fun. Amazing night.

hey sam,

I actually saw u taking the photos on the uoft campus.. they really portray the experience in a surreal way

Posted by k at October 3, 2006 01:17 AM

Not a photographer, or much of an artist, by any means, but, I must say that fog was a great way to amplify light in the midst of night. Lovely photos, always bringing me joy and sometimes a little serenity in my life...much appreciated!

Posted by robin at October 3, 2006 02:10 AM

Excellent atmosphere, love these shots!

Posted by Craig Wilson at October 3, 2006 04:16 AM

Well done Sam. Amazing pictures specially the first two. I know you must like the third one more, otherwise you wouldn't put it there, but that's my idea.
I didn't think about the 'Fog Instalation' being Art or not. However, I think performing something that might not be considered as an Art itself and just a technicality, but creating an artistic atmosphere for others to be more creative and do their art work using that performance or atmosphere is still considered as an artisitc act.
Put it this way, without that 'Fog Instalation' we couldn't have these pictures and not a fun night in which people had enjoyed it a lot as the words say.
Well done to you again Sam to creat such fantastic photos. Your pictures are always considered as Art, no matter what they say.
Keep it up mate.
