That's one of your nicest ones. I truly love that effect, plus it's nice to know that you don't have to own expensive lenses (like tilt-shift ones) to make beautiful photographs. I made my brother discover your site recently and he is hooked! Great jom, Sam!

Once again, proving I know NOTHING about Photoshop. Haha, I would love to know how to do that!

I don't think the miniature effect works as well when you include the sky. Well, I still think the photo is interesting because it really draws out that building, but it doesn't really look miniature anymore -- the sky destroys the illusion.

I'd really like to see a photoshopped version of this that has the sky replaced with a hobby shop or someone's workroom or something (with a nice antique spotlight as the light source).

Very nice, love it. Too bad on the TS, I know the feeling of not wide enough.

Posted by Zach at September 28, 2006 02:21 AM

Normally I love your photos, but this blurry edges thing isn't working for me.

Stunning!

Toronto seems to be such an amazing city! You step up a hotel, take some pictures and the view in almost any direction is really great; unfortunately we don't have this in Bonn, Germany.

Very nice shot with your reliable wide-angle lens and well done in Photoshop!

Absolutly amazing pictures. Congrats for the cover ...

I love this picture but i think it's even better with the crop that was made for the "spacing cover".

Anyway, how do you do that kind of thing in Photoshop???

thanks

Nicolas

Great shot!

How are you able to just walk up to the top floor of buildings to take pictures? Do you have any techniques or tips you could share with us?

Hi

The picture looks stunning, do have any nice guide of accomplishing the "Tilt/Shift-effect" in Photoshop?

I've tried one guide but it didn't work out to well.

Thanks, Fredrik

Totally cool shot, well composed and awesome PP.

Posted by Jeppe Engell at September 28, 2006 05:47 AM

cool! how do you do such miniature effect shots? just changing the lens, combining in photoshop and unsharpen the wide view? please tell me! looks great!

thanks,
daniel

Even though this one wasnt made using the lens I really do think this is the best one. Fantastic!

Posted by Gavin at September 28, 2006 06:07 AM

This is fantastic Sam, if the cover is even remotely like this it will be a huge success. Even if it's not, I love it here. Great one man.

Posted by Richard at September 28, 2006 06:12 AM

Nice shot, Sam ! It's not so easy to get this miniature effect, but it's still impressive... Keep it up ! ;-)

Posted by Jay at September 28, 2006 06:23 AM

great central focus.

Even before reading about the selection for the magazine, i was blown away by this picture! Fanastic execution of the miniature effect ... i wonder if it would have been even better if you could have used the tilt-shift lenses?....

Posted by Kris [PiXistenZ] at September 28, 2006 07:47 AM

I enjoied this serial-shot; however the only negative point to use tilt-shift lenses in this way is that the reall city looks like a model that can be your aim to use the lense

Posted by Reza at September 28, 2006 09:33 AM

again, i'm amazed. great job sam.

Looks a little oversharpened on screen, awesome shot and post though. Would love to see it in print!

aalaa bohot aalaa!!!

(urdu for wow)

I gotta say, I do love the minature effect, but I agree Stewart Johnson when he says that te sky ruins the illusion of the "model". However, if you don't see it an as illusion of a model, it's a hell of a photo! I love it.

Posted by Ash at September 28, 2006 01:46 PM

Awww, that's ashame that the tilt-shift lenses didn't work out. I love the detailed results they produce. With the blur and everything this photo, unfortunately, looks too photoshop-y [though I don't think it could have been done any better :o)].

Posted by Elissa at September 28, 2006 02:02 PM

congratulations on the cover sam, well deserved. i'm not sure why you have not done a book yet :)

You have such an amazing way of making a real landscape look like a toy city.

Posted by Jenny at September 28, 2006 04:33 PM

Really fantastic image. Can you release it as desktop wallpaper?

Great shots Sam, I've been watching this site for almost a year now without ever commenting... but now I just feel like I got to agree with every other comment: it's just fantastic!

Now, if only I could just wander to the roof of a large hotel... :-)

Posted by Nate at September 28, 2006 09:14 PM

Honestly, I think this one is better than the ones with the TS.

Posted by Peter at September 28, 2006 11:20 PM

focus to blur a bit abrupt. looks like picasa, not ps, although it is a nice picture.

As Congo votes in parliamentary and second-round presidential elections Sunday, the fault line between the country’s vast west and its mineral-rich east appears to be growing.
