The phone looks more like an audioguide for a museum , doesn't it?

Such depth and stunning color! I love the sense of the power of history riding on and life seeming little by its course.

A pair of serious looking fellows.

Cool! I was just there on Saturday! This looks like typical tuscan late-afternoon light. Great detail on the statue, which is of Cosimo, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Of all the statues in the Piazza, this is probably the one that gets the least attention (most people usually concentrate on the statue of Neptune in the fountain or the copy of the David at the Palazzo's main entrance). I don't know who the guy on the phone is, though.

why does his cellphone look like a cucumber? or it is a cucumber... They said it helps to think holding a cucumber in your hand.

what a great picture!

Good catch and nice light! The statue looks like a horse messenger, who's kind of sad. If only he had a cel phone, it would make his job so much easier.

This shot shows an image of the old times and the now times. Cool thinking.

The exact name is "piazza della signoria"!

nice composition, and big enough DOF!
great work.

Light is perfect. That guy behind the first motive, "freed" the photo. Nice one!

Very nice photo. I love the fact that you can even see the veins on the horse. Its a great statute.

what a contrast.

My favorite bit is the pigeon cozily roosting in a fold of his cape. Excellent shot, Sam.

You are a master Photoshopper.

10x better than the one I took

I was in Florence this summer. Unfortunately I didn't visit the Piazza Della Signoria. Nice photo, nonetheless.

Posted by Dustin at September 20, 2006 08:40 PM

Sam, you are unbelievable.
Florence is my favorite place in the world. I've glanced at this Cosimo equestrian statue so many times, yet you managed to give it your own spin... such a refreshing, ironic and delightful view. :) love it.

Like the juxtaposition.

Posted by Edouard Mouy at September 20, 2006 09:50 PM

I love how the man on the horse, stoutly carrying his message in hand, contrasts with the guy in the window communicating through a mobile phone to someone (who could be) anywhere in the world.

Makes me wonder where we'll be in another 500 years...

A tricky exposure well done, to get details in highlight & shadow. I love the harmony of colours, too, as well as the contrast of new & old that people have mentioned.
I also love the pigeon(?) on the statue's shoulder, except that it reminds me of the story "The Happy Prince", which upset me a lot as a child when it was read to me at Christmas, and can still make me cry. Not what you usually associate with Oscar Wilde.

The face of the statue is a curious one, it reminds me of some Byzantine sculptures, like a head of Constantine I've seen photos of. More abstract, rather than realistic.
