Seems you are headed in the wrong direction.

Terrific image.

Just the right amount of colour and movement in the distant flags. Great stuff.

I love the shot, but I'm not keen on the grain and focus.

Posted by Craig Wilson at August 18, 2006 09:19 AM

Very nice! I like seeing the arrow after scrolling down. LOL

Posted by Michael at August 18, 2006 09:21 AM

Lovely!

Tad bit blurry, but theres a nice surreal feeling to the top part of the image.

Lovely shot, certainly gives the feeling of being there.

I was just introduced to your site in the ast week and since I have looked a probably 100 of your shots. You are an amazing photographer however, this is not some of your best work.

Totally depressing life conditions. And nothing anyone can do about it. A good reason for God to bring the world to an end and save the rightreous for Heaven. Nice dream!

Nice job. It's like a dream! I love it....

Posted by niusha at August 18, 2006 01:56 PM

But what does it *mean,* that arrow?

Posted by forrest at August 18, 2006 04:32 PM

Don't be misled by the surface appearance of Italian towns. Although the streets are ancient, and the laundry on show, behind the shutters are spotless modern apartments, with just as many TVs, computers, and ipods as anywhere in Western Europe. There are areas of poorer housing, as anywhere, and particularly as you go further south, but these tend to be out of the historic centres.
That's what I've observed over many visits to Italy. Carry on posting your photos of your trip (I would like to see all of them!)
The discussion of photography on http://peteashton.com/ might be of interest.

One word - EVOCATIVE!

Posted by Curly at August 18, 2006 08:37 PM

Is it just me or does that shot need a tripod?

Posted by Andrew at August 18, 2006 10:38 PM

I'm really surprised by many of the comments about today's pic. I really think this is an amazing shot and I'm shocked at how many people think otherwise. Also, I wouldn't describe these living conditions as "depressing", this is really quite beautiful...

This reminds me of a photo by bill by bill brandt. nice contrast.

Something strangely disturbing about this picture.. Almost claustrophobic.. Yet, can't quite stop looking at.. Great work Sam!!

Posted by Bobin at August 19, 2006 04:36 AM

oh! although sometimes I get a little peeved when I have to scroll down to see your photos, this one had the best effect - like I am myself standing there!
great photo this...

Keep a shredder nearby to process the naysayers. I went to Italy a couple of years ago and totally fell in love with it. Going again in a couple of weeks time.

Your photo is the kind of photo that I aspire to take.

I think it's bloody lovely and the .... with the pickers of nits.

I'd like to add a second comment here, a few days late, to thank Karen Fry for pointing out what I'd been suspicious about. That the apartments behind the cruddy decrepit exteriors are actually very high quality - in most cases anyway. We might now assume that some are less so. This may speak well of the solid construction of the original building, despite the outer appearance. Thanks again Karen. One shouldn't judge a book by the cover, eh?

beautiful! love the atmosphere

Resident Evil anyone? Or a back street in Silent Hill? Great photo.

Posted by Martin at September 14, 2006 06:52 PM

I see the shot was taken at ISO 200 and 1/20s... and overall the shot is very impressive, I really like it. But why wasn't it taken iso 400 and maybe 1/40 - 1/60s? Is it to reduce the noise in the shadows? There's a good chance I'll never be back here on this one specific picture's comment area, so if anyone has an answer, just email me back kikkoman@ufl.edu
