Comments: pink on bike

j'adore ca, mais je suis toujours sole avec mon velo !

Why post if it's a lame photo? It's okay not to post all the time.

Personally I would rather quality over quantity.

Posted by Stewart Johnson at August 8, 2006 03:28 AM

On the contrary I think it is a lovely unusual composition.
The fact that you chose it seems to indicate that you also liked it; after all the work of the photographer is to select what he or she likes and not what correspond to accepted standards.
I think your work is ,if not always excellent, at least always interesting.

Always a good surprise to look at your images - though this one is not really a surprise: for me as European´it seemes quite common, children and pinks and bikes, but cute anyway. And: looking forward to my "daily dose" tomorrow

Posted by bertha at August 8, 2006 04:03 AM

Hehe, just the same situation with that old farmer. I´ve just moved to stockholm, and it´s a lot of bikes to shoot

Posted by Haakon at August 8, 2006 04:58 AM

Since the faces of the kids are visible, the composition is not so bad. I love the mood in the picture, very relaxed and full of affection

Posted by navin harish at August 8, 2006 05:29 AM

nice capture....

Posted by Chantal at August 8, 2006 05:38 AM

warm and fragrant:-)

Posted by Xiaoming Mei at August 8, 2006 05:39 AM

Warm and fragrant.实在是一张很温馨照片,两个小孩非常的可爱。

Posted by Xiaoming Mei at August 8, 2006 05:43 AM

I wonder why you think the composition is lame.
To me it's another inspired/inspiring shot that
makes visiting your site a very special moment.

Posted by Mr C. at August 8, 2006 05:48 AM

no way. the composition is great. this is a great photo.

Posted by aaron the bold at August 8, 2006 08:05 AM

Are you kidding? That's beautiful composition. Even if you had time to set up the shot I doubt you would've taken a better one. Who needs to see the father's head...what makes the photo great is how you caught the children- along for the ride, trusting of their parent, and not a care in the world. I like it.

Posted by JoePike at August 8, 2006 08:10 AM

Beautiful legs!

Posted by Harlequinpan at August 8, 2006 08:16 AM

lame composition? hells no! this picture's awesome! the look on the kids' faces is rockin!

look ma! no helmets!

Posted by maria at August 8, 2006 08:25 AM

I wouldn't consider the composition lame. I never even thought it was an accident. I think this just brings the children on a bike ride more into the focus. It would have been a completely different photo all together with the father's body in the shot and I have to say, I like it this way. It's impressively well-shot for being "from the hip".

I like it.

Posted by Kyle at August 8, 2006 08:49 AM

Lame composition? I think not. The fact that the man's head is cut off works well. Excellent shot.

Posted by Martin at August 8, 2006 09:12 AM

Sam, no apologies necessary! This is beautiful!

Posted by Avi at August 8, 2006 09:30 AM

actually, i don't think it's lame at all. gets in the minds eye of the child, er something.

Posted by phil at August 8, 2006 09:36 AM

This may sound funny, but I don't see how this would have been better if you'd been able to include the father's head.
The kids are right where they need to be.
I think it looks a bit like Dad has been reduced to a vehicle for the children...and that works, for me.

Posted by dazedgonebye at August 8, 2006 09:36 AM

Perhaps i wont have thought it lame, if u had not mentioned it :). It is "accidentally" quite nice. The expressions are precious. There is a lot to see.

Posted by Iris at August 8, 2006 09:38 AM

I think the composition works. Nice lighting, and that little girl is adorable. Nice shot.

Posted by sigma at August 8, 2006 09:51 AM

If you have over 30GB of photos from Italy and you don't like this photo all that much, why would you post it? You must have something you like better...

Posted by mucig at August 8, 2006 10:46 AM

I wanna bet that this a Dutch family: the make of the bike, the children seats front and back, the bags and last but not least: the shorts and slippers. This must be a Dutchman on holiday!

Posted by Ingrid at August 8, 2006 11:01 AM

What I wouldn't give to be that small again...able to take a ride on my fathers handlebars. They look quite content, and I'm not convinced that if I was able to see the mans head that the shot we would be any better. I like the fact that the focus is on the two children. It seemed intentional before I read your comment.

Posted by Lora at August 8, 2006 11:58 AM

I agree, I like the composition with this one. While it's one of those shots you just do last micro second it still turned out. I've had shots that turned out WAAAAAAY worse than this, and I had planned the shot. :P

Posted by Andrew at August 8, 2006 12:05 PM

Actually its a great composition. It reminds me of Joes NYC, which usually features such up close and personal shots. Its probably better with the man's head cut off. Nice work! Shooting from the waist sometimes yields great shots, just like this.

Posted by jesse at August 8, 2006 12:16 PM

Great shot, love the look on the kids faces, if you had composed properly it might not have worked as well.

Posted by Craig at August 8, 2006 12:35 PM

Yeah, the composition is actually pretty good for a from-the-neck shot.

Posted by Rob at August 8, 2006 12:36 PM

I'd rather not have the man beheaded like that, it does seem a bit cruel to me.. but the kids and the bike all make up for that.. an adorable scene and a fleeting moment you managed to catch in this pic

Posted by Susie at August 8, 2006 12:51 PM

It turned out not too bad! Though i find Joe Pike's comment extremely hilarious, i think the father's head, if included, would have improved the picture. :)

Posted by PlasticTV at August 8, 2006 01:12 PM

Very cute! The colours are really nice and the fact that you captured them so sharply just makes this image so worthwhile as a post. It's too bad about the orange fencing in the background... i've had construction equipment riddling my photos all week. It's driving me crazy!

Posted by Tanja > DoubleCrossed.ca at August 8, 2006 01:16 PM

I like this shot and would call the composition quirky rather than lame.

Posted by Alnoor at August 8, 2006 01:22 PM

i beg to differ with your initial comments about this piccie! this "lame" composition is what -- in my opinion, at least -- gives this shot such charisma. the anonymous "dad" becomes a suggestive "engine" powering along the two ACTUAL subjects of the piece (the pink kids!). reminds me of some of the great street photos from the twentieth century, but in fabulous pink! sometimes "lame" compositions are what make candid photography -- something that you do so well -- successful! so to the naysayers that tell you not to poste this kind of stuff, i say "keep it up!" (and the camera down!).

Posted by christopher t. at August 8, 2006 01:23 PM

This is NOT a lame photo. I think that this photo could tell a story about these two kids and their driver. Er, dad.

Posted by Spants at August 8, 2006 02:09 PM

I like this, not sure if it would be better with the Dad totally in the frame or not. It's cool like it is.

Posted by Laurie at August 8, 2006 02:19 PM

Initially this photo seems cute and quirky. But the more I look at it, the more I'm disturbed by the composition. The father's head is cut off, making the whole group, man, bike and kids directionless, maybe even out of control. Then you realize that the girl is also quite disturbing. Her expression, the look in her eyes. The way her head is tilted menacingly, as if to say, "you talkin to me, PUNK?!" And finally, her little hands on the little handlebars show who the true director of this posse is. She gives onlookers the impression that the father is steering, but her tight grip on the handlebars, her stern demeanor and the fact that she has emasculated the man, making him wear a pink polo shirt, this shows that she is the one that is truly in charge. ~Onward papi, a la fetuccini alfredo~

Posted by furt at August 8, 2006 03:36 PM

I disagree with the "lame" comment. In my mind, this is a picture of the kids, and the parent on the bicycle is merely part of the transportation unit. This is well seen and works nicely as is.

Cheers -

I don`t know how you do it, man. This is a great photo.

Posted by ugur gundogmus at August 8, 2006 05:05 PM

This is awesome because we would NEVER see anything like this in the USA which I know. First of all it is too dangerous to have your children transported in such a way. Second most men just dont go that far. He must have gone shopping as well as caring for the children. The comment on the pink shirt is strange. Why should men be limited to drab grey and blue? Light pastels are good in sunny climates. This is a very precious photo. I like the grey stone pattern contrasting against the pink. It looks like it may be a road which is slopped so that is even more risky. It is odd that these precious one are not wearing head gear. Beautiful statement made by a male about a male!

Posted by Anne at August 8, 2006 06:08 PM

@Anne: Dangerous way of transport? Hmpf you should come to Holland for one day...

Posted by Michael at August 8, 2006 06:50 PM

do you thrive off popularity?

Posted by darren Rigo at August 8, 2006 07:13 PM

I assume that the photographer does not know the subjects nor did he get consent before shooting this image. If this is true, then it is just another theft of a moment in time. If there wes consent, then my apologies for the accusation.

Posted by nate kraxberger at August 8, 2006 08:25 PM

not a great shot...not even 'good' but contrary to some comments above, i'm glad you posted it. it's a true representation of something that happened to you recently and it's spontaneous. that's what a daily photo site SHOULD be like...a daily story.
Thanks for the smile and the crappy photo post!
(strange comment eh?)

Posted by CrankPhoto at August 8, 2006 09:24 PM

LOL, the comment by 'furt' really cracked me up!

Cheers,
Jason

Posted by Jason at August 8, 2006 09:48 PM

like the photo. wear helmets!

Posted by tee at August 9, 2006 01:11 AM

pretty sure these are Dutch people on a holiday in Italy!

Posted by Joyce at August 9, 2006 05:25 AM

I'm a sometimes portrait artist, so the colors alone make this picture worthwhile. Maybe this is considered lame by photographers' standards, but it isn't by those who like to think outside the box.

Posted by Francine at August 9, 2006 10:04 AM

I actually really enjoy this shot. The kids are looking at you but the adult on the bike looks clueless, almost like a mode of transportation, or like the big headless teacher in charlie brown

Posted by steve at August 9, 2006 10:47 AM

OMG his headless!!!! :) Seriously it's not a bad picture it's just... different.

Posted by Bedirhan at August 9, 2006 11:18 AM

Lame? Not at all. Serendipitously un-conventional, sure - but it works so I am glad you posted it. It is a lovely photographs and looking at it means so much to me. I wish I could do this with my kids - it would combine things I love, my kids, cycling, doing the mudane with my kids in an ecological fashion. Unfortunately in NorthAmerica someone would call the CAS if they saw my riding around with my kids like that!

Posted by Dominic at August 9, 2006 11:39 AM

still cute

Posted by mikhail at August 10, 2006 01:13 AM

I think I have to come down in the quirky but interesting category regarding the composition. It works in quite a different way. Sometimes best not over-analyze an image... feel the initial impact and go with it.

Posted by alan at August 10, 2006 01:46 PM

It looks like the children are in charge of where they go and their dad is just the engine. I like it.

Posted by rob at August 11, 2006 08:39 AM

Anne: It's infinitely safer than transporting children in your car (really, look up the stats).

Posted by Steve at August 12, 2006 10:10 AM

The composition of this photograph is excellent, if accidental. I just came back and looked at this pic some days after I first saw it and the composition really is stunning.

Congratulations and thanks.

Colin.

Posted by Frank at August 17, 2006 04:24 PM

this is a gorgeous shot. botht kids are so cute. the litte one in the front is realy enjoying the bike ride :)

Posted by armeen at August 21, 2006 12:03 PM

LOL, i hope the second poster is not a friend of yours! if you had not mentioned the circumstances in which you took the photo, i would have thought this was intentional. it almost looks as though you were trying to capture THEIR world from THEIR perspecive. it any case it is very whisical and wonderful!!

Posted by shutterfury at August 24, 2006 02:19 PM

I also loved this photo. I find the expressions on the children's faces so interesting. Why are they so serious? Great accident!

Posted by vic at August 27, 2006 02:36 PM

lame composition it is not, trust in your instinct, shoot more without holding the camera to your eye

Posted by peteb at August 31, 2006 12:28 PM

follow-up, this is one of my favourite photos that has now adorned my work PC's desktop slide show for the past two months...
