Btw, excellent photo. Especially the lightning which is ending in some tower (CN tower?).

Posted by Chantal at August 3, 2006 07:06 AM

do you guys get an extraordinary amount of lightning up there or what? I'm not sure what catches my eye more the lightning or teh wicked relfection of the city street in the building on the right. Between you and genstho.ca i think there might be a lightning shoot off! great stuff.

Posted by doodlehedz at August 3, 2006 07:13 AM

Wow Sam, what a view and did you ever catch the tower doing its thing. Dang, direct hit. Beautiful photograph.

Posted by Richard at August 3, 2006 07:17 AM

I dream of getting shots like this...sigh

Posted by Laurie at August 3, 2006 07:40 AM

I've always wondered the best way to capture lighting. Do you just set a long exposure and wait?

btw...this picture is a beautiful shot. can you upload a wallpaper-sized version?

This is a great shot. I love lightening and you certainly captured it well here. Thanks for braving the elements and getting this view. I love it.

Posted by J. Rivera at August 3, 2006 08:10 AM

Who doesn't like a good photograph of lightning on an urban skyline? A simple no nonsense narrative: man vs. nature. This ont is particularly well composed, as if the lightning was a very cooperative subject. An odd dimensional tension is created by the phantom street reflection in the forthbay of the foreground building. Top Notch Sam. Hi Steve!

Posted by SubliminalDave at August 3, 2006 08:14 AM

i'm ready to visit toronto

Posted by ken at August 3, 2006 08:23 AM

How do you get the shutter to go at the time of the lightning????

Posted by Jason at August 3, 2006 08:43 AM

Um, you know when you do that thing where you make the picture available as desktop wallpaper? Can you do that for this one? Your work is amazing dude. Been a fan for about a year now. Thank you.

Posted by k at August 3, 2006 08:46 AM

Okay, first of all, that's a pretty great view from your kitchen! Second, that is some pretty crazy lightning.

Great capture, as always.

Posted by jodi at August 3, 2006 08:51 AM

Ya know, Sam? Every now and then you post one that I end up calling my new favorite. This is another!! When I think you can't top one of your best, you prove me wrong. I'm glad. This is awesome Sam. Really. I try to get lightning all the time but just can't find the right spot. Looks like you live in the right spot! I'm glad the lightning hit that lightning rod and not your place!

Posted by Nate at August 3, 2006 08:51 AM

Wow, this shot is just incredible. That must have been a crazy storm to get that much lightning in 10 seconds. Love the big bolt shooting down to the tower.

Posted by Phil at August 3, 2006 08:53 AM

Holy Crap!
And this Photo is not edited... ir at least all of those lightning bolts are Real?! Dude you are lucky, how in the World did you get a shot like that!??
Respect!
-=David=-

Posted by David Goering at August 3, 2006 09:01 AM

Is that lightning stroke at the CN tower or just a sheer co-incidence with the background?

I'm jealous of you having this (particular) view.

Posted by Pieter at August 3, 2006 09:07 AM

Stunning. Was outside during the storm last night and could never catch a strike; I was always looking the wrong way. A wall paper version would be nice. Cheers.

also, what a great view from your kitchen!!

Posted by shula at August 3, 2006 09:16 AM

Posted by Daniel Seguin at August 3, 2006 09:21 AM

Wow! this is one of the best city lightning photos I've seen. Facinating how much electric there was in the sky at one time, very impressive... Right now I'd just settle for some rain here in NYC to help with this 100 degree heatwave!

Posted by matthew at August 3, 2006 09:23 AM

Wow, that's cool. Amazing how much you can catch with a 10s exposure.

Posted by Rob at August 3, 2006 09:27 AM

Amazing shot!! can you make a wallpaper version for this please?

Posted by Rebecca at August 3, 2006 09:28 AM

Posted by mike balders at August 3, 2006 09:31 AM

wow, what a spectacular shot - and storm! It was nuts in Newmarket last night. I've never seen the skies so dark.

I tried to get a similar shot, and I did manage one, although it didn't quite meet my expectations.

Can you post your technique for capturing this type of shot? Storms fascinate me and I'm sure we'll get many more before this summer is over.

Posted by dave at August 3, 2006 09:32 AM

Amazing shot Sam. Too bad the buildings are a bit overexposed, but I know how difficult is to make these kinds of shots.
Very powerful...

Posted by Photoblog Community at August 3, 2006 09:37 AM

Nicely captured. Any post processing tips on this one?

Posted by Chris at August 3, 2006 09:41 AM

WOW Sam....what a fantastic shot!!!
Everything is so clear and perfectly lit!! Its amazing the strength of the lightening hitting the CN tower compared to the others!

Posted by otomi at August 3, 2006 10:11 AM

Wow - that's really amazing. I guess it helps to have a window that affords such a convenient view of the cityscape. I live in an apartment building in Brooklyn - but we're only on the 2nd floor, and our windows are coated with a robust layer of NYC grime. We do have roof access too, but then who wants to go on the roof during a lightning storm?

Posted by flysi at August 3, 2006 10:14 AM

no way.

you must be practicing wizardry..

excellent shot. lucky too.

Posted by ik at August 3, 2006 10:17 AM

Posted by nopants at August 3, 2006 10:19 AM

That is a phenomenal capture, Sam!! Isn't it amazing that the giant lightning rod (a.k.a the CN Tower) can withstand so much energy being directed at it? What a light show! Thanks for sharing.

Posted by Kathy at August 3, 2006 10:57 AM

Posted by Marco at August 3, 2006 11:00 AM

dear jesus! awesome capture. it's so hard to take a picture of a lightning strike! i'm speechless.....

Posted by sushi at August 3, 2006 11:02 AM

This is one of the more interesting lightening shots I've ever seen, Sam. You'd almost think it was a random line drawn by a kid doing lightening. It seems so unreal and abstract to how we perceive what it should be. The only line that seems normal is the strike on the Tower.

Great!

Posted by Hugh Petrie at August 3, 2006 11:02 AM

Posted by José at August 3, 2006 05:03 PM

wonderful... brilliant.. and thanks for sharing how you did it..

Posted by sach1tb at August 3, 2006 05:12 PM

three things blow me away about this. The red light on the centre building, the lightning looks like it is coming out of the tower and the reflection in the building on the front right gives the impression of depth into the frame. This may have been said already but I did not have time to read comments 1 - 122. Nice job.

Posted by photoDude at August 3, 2006 05:35 PM

you are a genius amount us regular humans. You're creativity (in capturing it) is awe inspiring.

I think this one should be nominated to pic of the year.

Posted by selam at August 3, 2006 05:53 PM

This is a stunning photo, the building's look great and you have capture the lightning actually hitting the CN tower which makes this some shot.

Posted by Paul Woolrich at August 3, 2006 06:25 PM

Other than the lightning, the levels on this photo are tremendous. I especially enjoy the reflection of the street below in the first building's front. It shows great movement with the ten second exposure.

Posted by Sherman at August 3, 2006 07:08 PM

Nice. Very impressive.

Posted by James Lomax at August 3, 2006 07:19 PM

wicked shot!

Posted by Ash at August 3, 2006 07:56 PM

For those who don't know, the CN Tower is the tallest free-standing structure in the world.

The photo doesn't emphasize the great disparity in height between the tower and the surrounding buildings, but I think the lightning bolt hitting the tower is likely much closer than the others, which are further in the distance.

What an amazing shot!

Posted by peter at August 11, 2006 04:58 PM

This powerful shot is unique, but I have to mention that it drives me nuts, nuts, NUTS that there are so many lights on in Toronto. The same storm hit our city 20 minutes later (we are 90 miles east) and we didn't have our lights on in this town yet! In fact, in our house we cut all electrical use during the storm and used candles. Why, why, why are people not conserving power especially when so much electrical energy is flying around in the ozone??? I cannot figure people out. Get with the program and conserve for our planet, please.
